Tree Order Deadline of TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2017. invoices will be mailed and must be paid in full, prior to tree pick-up at the end of April. Greetings! If you are interested in planting your property with larger trees, then the Spring Large Stock Program may be just what you’re looking for. The Essex Region Conservation Authority offers 5 to 7 foot tall native hardwood trees (deciduous) and 1.5 to 2.5 foot tall evergreens and potted native shrubs. ELIGIBILITY 1. Own at least 1 acre of land in a single property within ERCA’S watershed 2. Order a minimum of 15 trees. Hardwood trees must be ordered in bundles of 5 for each species ordered. OUR STANDARDS We work closely with our private sector nursery partners to ensure: •product quality •trees are transported and stored properly •trees are in excellent condition at the time of pick up ORDERING Minimum: 15 trees required, any combination of hardwoods evergreens or shrubs. DEADLINE: Orders must be received by: FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2017 Order Pick Up: Customers will be notified by mail, when trees are available for pick up. Typically tree pickup dates coincide with a weekend at the end of April. Notification packages include invoice information, payment instructions, pick up dates, times and locations along with maps. NOTE: Once the trees leave our facility, we are unable to extend a guarantee on tree survival. NATIVE SHRUBS Shrubs are excellent for wildlife, cover and food, have multiple stems and tend to grow as wide as they do tall. Silky Dogwood $13.00 Small creamy white flowers; round blue berries; 6 to10 feet in height & spread Red Osier Dogwood $13.50 Beautiful red branches; is well-adapted to moist areas and ditch edges; 10 feet in height and spread Grey Dogwood $16.00 Prefers moist soils along river banks, roadsides, fencerows; creamy white flowers and white berry like fruit; prospers in sun or shade Highbush Cranberry $14.50 Prefers moist areas; berries for wildlife; maple-like leaf; 8 to12 feet in height/spread Staghorn Sumac $14.50 A hardy shrub that produces red “staghorns“ of fruit and has leaves that turn red in the fall; will grow on most sites and up to 15 feet in height and spread Buttonbush $15.50 Small shrub; 9 feet in height; prefers a wetter site; a source of food and shelter for wildlife Nannyberry $16.00 Prefers ditch edges and wet areas; berries for wildlife; can grow up to 18 feet in height and 6 to10 feet in spread Winterberry Holly $16.75 Perfect plant for wet, or poorly drained sites; grows well in drier soils too; heights from 3 to 15 feet Serviceberry $17.50 Small native tree or shrub with beautiful flowers followed by edible berries; great fall colours of orange and reds American Elderberry $14.00 Best in moist sites; berries for wildlife; spreads profusely; variable size up to 12 feet NATIVE HARDWOODS All hardwoods are bare root trees which have been lifted from the ground with no soil around their roots. Our partner nurseries then bundle each species into groups of 5. The hardwoods listed below are some of the native Carolinian trees of the Essex region. When planted in the proper site, they will offer many benefits such as shade, cleaner air and habitat for wildlife. The evergreens listed below will perform well when planted in the proper site. During times of drought, Evergreen trees will need extra care and watering. White Cedar $14.50 Makes a dense windbreak; will tolerate a wide variety of soils, but suffers in poorly drained areas; mature height of 30 feet Red Cedar $15.25 Native to the Essex region; tolerant of hot & dry conditions; narrow form White Pine $15.25 Occurs naturally at Point Pelee; requires well-drained, sandy sites for best growth; soft long needles White Spruce $14.00 Forms a less dense windbreak than cedar but still suitable for windbreaks; requires well-drained soil; has a typical ‘Christmas tree’ form Norway Spruce $13.50 Will tolerate clay, rocky and dry soils.
