2432 Conservatory Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46203 T/ 317 327 7135 www.gpacarts.org PRESS RELEASE Call For Artists Electric Light: Fluorescent and Neon in Contemporary Art Practice November 7, 2015—November 18, 2015 The Garfield Park Arts Center (GPAC) will host Electric Light: Fluorescent and Neon in Contemporary Art Practice. In recognition of neon and fluorescent art, this group exhibition will feature inspired uses of luminescence in painting, film, textile, and light. The repurposing of neon in contemporary art captures attention and emotion in striking ways. Historically, neon light and paint were utilized in the commercial marketplace and were considered exclusively functional to sell products. Artists such as Bruce Nauman and Tracey Emin use this format in provocative and influential ways. By reclaiming these materials, artists may speak to the oversaturation of commercialism in our current landscape and simultaneously subvert this notion by using color as a means to create drama and evoke a visceral response from viewers. REQUIREMENTS: Original works must be no larger than 48” x 60” for 2-D and 36” x 60” for 3-D and ready to hang or install.
