Understanding Lines of Latitude
You have read that the Equator is an imaginary line around the center
of Earth. It runs east and west. There are many more lines that run east
and west around Earth. These lines are called lines of latitude. Lines of
latitude help us find places on maps and globes. They form part of a grid.
Each line of latitude is named with a number of degrees. The Equator
is 0°. All other lines of latitude are north or south of the Equator. There
are 90 lines of latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. The North Pole is 90°
North, or 90 N. There are 90 lines of latitude in the Southern Hemisphere.
The South Pole is 90° South, or 90 S.
