Members SPOTlight!
Harold and Sally Roberts,
They say "the family that plays
together stays together" and the
Roberts family takes that to the
extreme. They have been family members at Greenwood
since 1989. One of their favorite activities is our beloved
Boot Camp. Harold and Sally Roberts have been through
this amazing experience for three years, their children
(Jase, a senior at Cherry Creek High School and Katie, a
business & communications major at Santa Clara
University) have done it for two years. When asked how
they got their kids to participate, Sally told us that it was
actually their daughter Katie who tried it first and then
challenged her parents to give it a try. Sally remembers
Katie coming home one morning saying that Sergeant
Rob had made her cry from all the pushups, but she got
up the next morning and went back for more! Son, Jase,
then joined the fun.. tormenting Sergeant Rob to the
point of performing penalty pushups almost every
morning! Harold and Sally agree that the ultimate reward
from Boot Camp is the camaraderie you develop with the
other participants, unlike any other workout around.
When you think you can't go on, there is someone right
beside you feeling the same way, yet encouraging you to
go on. They told us, "Boot Camp breaks down all social
barriers. When you're under a 100lb log doing crunches,
it doesn't matter who you are, you're all suffering
together. You can't get that anywhere else." During "off
season" Harold and Sally participate in Breakfast Club,
play tennis and work out in the weight room. Outside the
club they enjoy skiing, are active in their church and
volunteer at the Anchor Center for Blind Children. The
Roberts are one of Greenwoods fit families and we are
privileged to have them as members!

P-Note, A message from the General Manager!
Mediocrity……………..NEVER!
Greenwood Athletic Club opened 18 years ago and the Tennis
Center will be celebrating its' 10 year anniversary this December.
With a combined operation of 28 years, it's not a surprise that we
have been described as the best health club in the Denver metro
area and one of the best in the country! GAC has also been rated
in the Top 100 Health Clubs as listed in Club Industry; the business
magazine for health & fitness facility management, many times
over.
I spent a few hours asking some of our members what they thought
of GAC and here were some comments; “We've been members for 18
years and we still look forward to coming every morning; it's a
home away from home; friendly, stimulating, motivating,
spectacular, vibrant, clean, fun, promotes a healthy lifestyle;
and,……the place to be”!
When a company is successful, has been given top honors, or has
been touted as the best, many times the company and its'
employees will think they've achieved and performed at a level
that is beyond improvement……….not Greenwood Athletic Club.
We refuse to settle for mediocrity because we believe you deserve
more! I had a member resign her membership about a month ago
and one reason she gave for canceling her membership was that we
remodel the club too often. We will do whatever it takes, within
reasonable measurements, to make the club aesthetically pleasing,
create a social environment that is warm and friendly, yet
motivating and challenging, and do our best to provide you with
quality programs and services, top-of-the-line equipment, and
uphold a standard of service that is not duplicated in the industry.

Those of you that utilize the Nordic Track treadmills located in the
upper cardiovascular area have noticed the amount of time the
treadmills are under repair. This is unacceptable! We have been in
contact with Free Motion Fitness (owners of Nordic Track) and are
working with them to help us devise a plan that will keep those
treadmills operating. We know how much you love them and our
goal is to meet your needs and satisfy our membership!
Some exciting news that let's us know we are on the right track is
that our resign rate is the lowest it's been in 18 years. Yet, we
want it to be lower! Each staff member at GAC is committed to
helping you achieve greatness; whether it's by decreasing your
level of stress, losing weight, increasing stamina, or simply being
a familiar face and smile! Your comments and feedback are
welcome as you are our eyes and ears! Remember, Greenwood
Athletic Club is your club! Challenge us, question us, and whatever
you do, don't let us settle for mediocrity.
My guarantee to you; we will continue to hold ourselves to a
higher standard of excellence, and we don't compare ourselves to
the
local
competitors.

There is no question that eating healthfully is a challenge. The
media suggests that we should have a body like Jennifer
Anniston, Sara Jessica Parker or Brad Pitt yet that same media
bombards us with advertisements for Big Macs, Little Debbies,
Doritos and Pepsi! My focus in this article is your health and I
will offer you 2 nutrition tips to think about. When it comes
time to eat .... think Quality and Quantity.
Make choices that are high in quality... I like to call it eating
from the ground up. Eat food in as close to it’s natural state as
possible and stay away from refined, processed items. Start by
reading labels . Be aware of what is in the food you eat. Food
is the most powerful drug we put in our bodies. If I handed you
a pill and said, “ I’m not going to tell you what this is, what’s
in it or what it will do to you, but I want you to take it three
times a day, every day.” Would you take it? Of course not, but
that’s what we do when we mindlessly eat processed food. Look
at the label on a box of Rice a Roni, Wonder Bread or Fruity
Pebbles. I can't even pronounce some of the ingredients listed!
If the item is full of ingredients that you can’t read and have no
clue what they are...skip it. The fruit and vegetables in the
produce section don’t need labels, what you see is what you get.
Rather than processed rice, try plain brown rice and add your
own olive oil and seasonings. Your body has a built-in shut off
switch if you are eating natural foods, but the further we stray
from the “ground” the less that switch works and we over
indulge. One Mini- doughnut has the same number of calories as
a small apple. I would never sit down and eat five apples, but I
could certainly eat five little doughnuts. Focus on lean protein
such as chicken, beef, turkey and as much “produce” as you
please. Then fill in with small portions of starches such as
potatoes, whole grain bread and tortillas, rice, corn, etc,
natures healthy fat from olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds and
an occasional treat.
The second tip is to be mindful of the quantity of food you're
taking in. What happened to the concept of portion control?
Look at the big Gulp cup at your local 7-11. 64 ounces of pop?
Are you kidding me? We are encouraged to Supersize everything!
Even coffee! When I first started going to Starbucks you
ordered a short, tall or grande. They don’t even have a short
anymore...it’s tall, grande or venti. The best thing to come out
of the book Body for Life was their examples of portion sizes.
Your palm and your fist. When you are eating in a restaurant, a
great tip is to ask for a to-go container as soon as your food
arrives. Take everything that is not your “portion” and put it in
the container, close the lid and set it aside. If that extra food
remained on your plate you might be tempted to keep picking
at it. Chances are, you won’t reach for the container, open it
and start eating again! Don’t be afraid to tell the server exactly
what you want. Restaurants are most often, very
accommodating. No sauce, dressing on the side, vegetables or
plain potato rather than fries and so on. When you are eating
at home, again, read your labels! Even a serving of the
wonderful brown rice is half a cup. Half a cup, level. Most of us
would eat enough to fill a cereal bowl! And contrary to popular
belief, that cereal bowl is not a serving size of the Ben and
Jerrys ice cream you eat as a before bed snack. If you have to
have it, have ONE serving... half a cup. Level! (and read the
label. That half a cup has about 360 calories! Is it really
worth it?)
I want to be around for my son and for the grandchildren I hope
to have. I want to be around and I want to be healthy and fit!
Getting even the minimum amount of exercise and trying to eat
more healthfully will relieve stress, give you energy, reduce
chronic pain, lower you chance for diseases like cancer, type II
diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease and help you maintain
a healthy weight. For my other 6 nutritional tips... mark your
calendar for "Lifestyle, Not Diet". This one hour lecture will he
held on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:00pm in the conference room.
See you then!

Try
Pilates!
By Melanie Isley
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for
all of the support and donations I received to participate
in the Peak Pilates instructor training program this past
month. Through everyone’s generous donations the
workshop was 100% covered and I’m thrilled I was able to
join my fellow co-workers to improve our abilities and
skills as Pilates instructors.
In September 2004 I was diagnosed with stage IIIA
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and I underwent weekly
chemotherapy sessions for approximately three months.
The treatment was successful and I can now use a quote
made famous by Lance Armstrong, “I’m not only a cancer
patient, I’m a cancer survivor.” Throughout this entire
process everyone has been so supportive (family and
friends, co-workers, the club, and clients) and it has
helped me win this battle while keeping a positive
attitude. Words cannot describe the impact all of your
support has had on me!
Peak Pilates, a Boulder based company, provides one of the
highest quality Pilates education experiences available for
instructors nationally and globally. The program combines
a solid foundation of classical Pilates, including instruction
on Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, and accessories in one compact
course. We can now pass along what we have learned to
our clients and this training session has elevated our
understanding and appreciation for Pilates.
My energy has returned to normal levels and I’m looking
forward to teaching more of what I have learned from this
program to others. If you are interested in learning more
about Pilates and what it can do for YOU, please feel free
to contact the Pilates Studio for additional information.

GAC Team Members
OCTOBER 2004
TEAM MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Omar Corrales
Maintenance/Landscaping
Omar began working at GAC in February 2003. He
has worked in several areas of the maintenance
department, including night shift and locker room
attendant, but was most visible the past 2 summers working as our
outdoor landscaper taking care of the GAC property.
He was born in Choluteca, Honduras and has been in Colorado for the
past 3 years, although his wife and two children still live in Tabasco,
Mexico. Omar enjoys playing soccer and also reading and watching
movies. He has had other jobs in Colorado, but none compare to the
great feeling of Greenwood Athletic Club, where the people are friendly
and he says it feels like a great big family.
NOVEMBER 2004
TEAM MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Penny Myers
Group Exercise Instructor
Penny began working at GAC in 1989. She has
taught a variety of group exercise and martial arts
classes. Penny was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska,
but has lived in Colorado for over 25 years. She and Rob, her husband
of 13 years, have 3 delightful, busy children: Lauren (10), Austin (7),
and Christian (7). Penny and Rob have always enjoyed sports and
athletics and now enjoy making sports a family event.
Penny has a law degree from DU law school and practiced law for 10
years. She is ACE certified in both group exercise and personal training
and is a 2nd degree black belt candidate. She is active in Cherry Hills
Community Church and enjoys scrap-booking.
Penny credits GAC member, Roni Melamed, as an inspiration in her life.
Roni was brutally attacked by a stalker, but fought fiercely and bravely
to fend him off. She has incredible inner strength and physical
strength, and inspires Penny to instruct more women in the area of
self-defense.
2004 TEAM MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Shadia Ahmad
Administration Team/Accounts Payable
Shadia is a Colorado born and raised native. She
began employment with GAC in the summer of
2001 where she worked in the youth summer
camps and then in Member Services. She focused
on schooling for a while and then was rehired in the summer of 2003
as a business office receptionist. In early 2004 she began assisting
with daily accounting and became the Accounts Payable Manager.
Shadia's immediate family includes mom, dad, 2 older sisters and 1
younger brother. Her mom works in the travel agency at GAC. One
sister previously worked for GAC and another sister currently works in
the personal training team. In addition to working at GAC, Shadia
attends Metro State College studying finance, enjoys spending time
with family, enjoys basketball and softball, and is busy planning her
wedding with her fiancé Ali. Shadia credits her sister Nadia as a
personal inspiration for her desire to achieve and her dedication to
her work.

Greenwood Athletic Club
Personal Trainer
What and when should my child
start to train with weights?
Heavy weight training is designed to increase
muscle bulk (the participant lifts very large loads
for a few repetitions) and to develop a lot of
power (quick explosive movements through a
range of motion).
This isn't a good activity for growing children because it can
cause injury to the growth plates of the bones. Since the
bones don't complete all of their growth until late in
adolescence, heavy weight training should be avoided until
after the teen years are over. For those below the age of 15,
body weight exercises (push-ups, sit ups, body squats, etc)
or strength training with lower weights are more appropriate.
At age 15, most people's bodies are mature enough to begin
the major lifts, performed with barbells, including the clean
and jerk, power clean, snatch, squat, dead lift and the
bench (incline and overhead presses). These exercises may
lead to injury if you lift with improper technique and try
heavier weights than you are capable of lifting without the
help of spotters. NOTE: please see a GAC personal trainer to
receive proper training and instruction on how to perform
the major lifts.
What your child younger than 15 should become involved in
is strength training with lower weights at higher
repetitions. Strength training involves more repetitions
(usually 15-20) of a mild to moderate amount of weight. It
can also include different forms of resistance exercises with
the use of tubing, cables, and medicine balls, and isometric
exercises (exercises that tone and strengthen the muscles
without the lifting or movement of weights). The goal is to
increase muscle strength over a short time without straining
the growth plates. Strength training improves performance
in sports and also has been shown to decrease the risk of
injury. It can be helpful regardless of the sport the child
participates in and can improve bone health and strength as
well, which is particularly important for pre-adolescent and
adolescent girls.
The goal of your training program will depend on your age,
your sport, physical maturity and the reason you are lifting
weights. You need to consider which exercises you will use,
how often you will do each exercise, what weight you will
start with and when you will increase the weight.
Whatever activity your child participates in, it's important to
make sure that he/she is supervised by knowledgeable,
qualified instructors who are used to working with children.
Please contact the Greenwood Athletic Club Personal Training
department for additional information.
