. FIFTH GRADE NEWS!! This week in Reading/Language Arts & What’s to Come In reading, we concluded our unit context clues with a summative on Tuesday. Students really did well on this test – I was proud of them! We worked on dictionary, thesaurus, and glossary skills this week and took a short test on Friday. Also, we continued working in our literature book clubs, and learned about the role of discussion director. Students began their discussions, and will continue reading their books and discussing them in small groups next week. In grammar, we began a unit in adjectives and adverbs. Test is next week! In writing, we focused on publishing our narrative stories. Look for a copy of their stories in their folders next week. Upcoming Events Monday,Oct. 10th Pumpkin Grams go on sale! Pencils (Ticonderoga & Dixon are best) Pencil Top Erasers Blue & Black Ball Point Pens Lysol/Chlorox Wipes Baby Wipes This week in Math/Science In math this week, we became decimals masters by learning how to multiply and divide decimals! We buried the remainder and learned how to add zeros to the dividend. If your child comes home humming “Stop, in the name of Math...” ask them to explain how to divide a decimal by a decimal! In science this week, we learned the difference between infectious and noninfectious diseases. We also learned how microorganisms can be both helpful (like making bread) and harmful (like causing disease). We researched three examples of each and made a flipbook. Students have homework over the weekend to finish researching for their flipbooks. We even got to each some yummy bread! Coming up in Ms. Robinson’s Room In math next week, we will continue with division of decimals, but we’ll also be learning how to use the rules of algebra to solve simple equations which include decimal multiplication and division. We may be ready for a test on Friday, but more likely we’ll be testing the following week. In science, we’ll finish with our science unit on Microbes and test on Wednesday. We’ll be switching back to social studies for the next 4.5 weeks on Thursday. We begin with the cattle ranchers of Texas and the importance of cattle trails to the development of the west.
