FIFTH GRADE

This week in Reading/Language Arts &
What’s to Come
In reading, we concluded our unit context
clues with a summative on Tuesday.
Students really did well on this test – I was
proud of them! We worked on dictionary,
thesaurus, and glossary skills this week and
took a short test on Friday. Also, we
continued working in our literature book
clubs, and learned about the role of
discussion director. Students began their
discussions, and will continue reading their
books and discussing them in small groups
next week. In grammar, we began a unit in
adjectives and adverbs. Test is next week! In
writing, we focused on publishing our
narrative stories. Look for a copy of their
stories in their folders next week.

This week in Math/Science
In math this week, we became decimals masters
by learning how to multiply and divide decimals!
We buried the remainder and learned how to add
zeros to the dividend. If your child comes home
humming “Stop, in the name of Math...” ask them
to explain how to divide a decimal by a decimal!
In science this week, we learned the difference
between infectious and noninfectious diseases. We
also learned how microorganisms can be both
helpful (like making bread) and harmful (like
causing disease). We researched three examples
of each and made a flipbook. Students have
homework over the weekend to finish researching
for their flipbooks. We even got to each some
yummy bread!
Coming up in Ms. Robinson’s Room
In math next week, we will continue with
division of decimals, but we’ll also be learning
how to use the rules of algebra to solve simple
equations which include decimal multiplication
and division. We may be ready for a test on
Friday, but more likely we’ll be testing the
following week.
In science, we’ll finish with our science unit on
Microbes and test on Wednesday. We’ll be
switching back to social studies for the next
4.5 weeks on Thursday. We begin with the
cattle ranchers of Texas and the importance of
cattle trails to the development of the west.
