WJEC Applied Science GCSE 1.3.2 Our Planet Name……………………………………… Elements – Metallic and Non-metallic Task 1: All the elements in the world are either metals or non-metals and can usually be distinguished by simple tests. You will need: samples of elements; a battery (cell); a light bulb and leads and a piece of emery cloth. If the bulb lights up the element conducts electricity. If the element is not shiny rub it with emery paper. It may be shiny underneath. Work through the samples fill in the table. Element Solid/liquid Or gas Shiny or dull Electrical conductor Will it bend Metal or non-metal Sulphur Graphite Magnesium Aluminium Zinc Iron Copper Gold Sodium Task 2: Each element has a name and chemical symbol.
