Steve and Christie Tondu April 2009 When the Tondus, Steve and Christie, joined the Genesys Athletic Club in 2002, their goal was to get fit. Christie says, “At the time I had only two children. I had gained weight from my pregnancies and wanted to get back into shape.” Steve too was looking to get in shape, and they thought a club membership would be good for the whole family. In the nearly seven years since they joined, two more children have been added to their roster, and the entire Tondu clan has become one of the club’s most active families. From working out and taking classes to social events, everyone is involved. Steve does cycling and has taken the 300 Challenge. The two youngest children, Lauren and Noah, enjoy Kids Corner. Their oldest, Madison, goes to dance classes on the weekends, and Stephen swims and plays basketball. Zumba the night away! The name “Zumba” is derived from a Colombian word meaning “to move fast and have fun.” On Friday, April 17, the GAC will be moving fast and having fun as Zumba educational specialists Barbara Klontz and Debbie Woods lead Zumba. Price is just $20 per person and includes two drink tickets. The class will run from 7 - 8:30 p.m., followed by snacks and drinks until 10 p.m. Come out and join the party! Summer Sports Camp Summer Sports Camp will be starting on June 15 for children between the ages of 6 to 12 years. Every week, activities will focus around exciting themes and all campers will have the opportunity to participate in sports, swimming, games, crafts and a variety of other activities. Summer Sports Camp runs until the end of August; camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Christie does the Incline Class on a regular basis and has taken the Transformation Challenge twice. Since signing up Christie has lost 42 pounds of baby weight. “I don’t think I would have lost the weight if I hadn’t found that class,” she says. Last year, Christie was in a bad car accident. She fractured her left patella and was in an immobilizer for three months. She credits physical therapy and her time at GAC with a quick recovery. Running is her thing, and she was able to run her first half marathon since the accident last summer. Children ages 3 to 5 years can attend Tiny Tots Junior Camp, where they can participate in games, crafts and tennis, as well as loads of fun on the outdoor Splash Pad. Children also develop fine motor skills and learn how to play with other children. Tiny Tots Junior Camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon. “The club has changed both of our lives,” Christie says, and sums it up “If I miss a couple days at the club, when I walk back in there, I feel like I am coming back home; that’s how I feel.” Drums Alive Come try the newest group fitness craze - Drums Alive. Get ready for some real results as our participants have lost over 1,500 lbs since the program started! Going on vacation? Don’t forget to exercise! Most people think of a vacation as a time to relax, not as a time for fitness. But, if you don’t keep up your exercise routine, your aerobic power can decline 5 to 10 percent in three weeks and all your gains could be gone after two months of inactivity. And did you know the fitter you are, the faster you lose your fitness? While getting away from reality is good for the soul, and getting away from your usual workout routine is good for your body, a vacation can be the perfect time to exercise. Open your mind to new ways to move your body and, the best part is, you can have fun all at the same time. Some of the best vacation cardio workouts include: Walking on the beach - Walking in soft sand is a killer workout and burns more calories than walking on flat ground. Keep it safe by wearing shoes (you may get shin splints if you go barefoot for too long). You’ll be surprised how hard it is. Beach volleyball - You can burn more than 150 calories an hour, depending on how hard you work. What other activity allows you to look so good while you sweat? Surfing, swimming and snorkeling - Surfing is a total body workout that will challenge every muscle in your body. Even if you just paddle out to the waves and fall off, you’ll get a great workout. You can make snorkeling more intense by swimming a little harder. Leisurely bike rides - Long bike rides are a great way to see the area while getting in some low-intensity exercise. If you take your time and go all day, you’ll burn calories without even thinking about it. Hiking - Anytime you add elevation to your walks, you’ll burn more calories. If you carry a backpack, you’ll challenge yourself even more, all while enjoying a little nature. Golf - Golf can be great workout if you carry your clubs and walk the course. Tennis - Like golf, a game of tennis can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. Chasing and hitting the ball like you’re Serena Williams or Roger Federer will give you a great workout! You don’t have to do much to maintain your strength and muscle while you’re on vacation. A quick workout using your body weight and resistance bands can keep you strong and fit until you get back to your usual routine. Swim into Summer with GAC Swim Team It’s time to get ready to swim as the GAC swim team wraps up the Winter training session and the Spring swim training session begins. The five-week Spring session will start on April 13 and ends May 14, and is the perfect opportunity to prepare for summer swim competitions. This summer, GAC members can participate in the 2009 Genesee County Interclub Swimming League, which is a competitive league comprised of eight area swim teams and is open to swimmers under the age of 18 years. The season runs June through July, with daily practices (three times a week for swimmers 8 years and younger) beginning after school on May 26. Once school is over, a morning practice schedule will begin. Competitive meets are held on most Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Registration will begin in April for members at an early bird rate. Registration at the full rate and for non-members will begin in May. Swimsuit and team apparel try-on dates are May 14 and May 16 in the GAC pro shop.
