This, along with the Christmas shopping season was reflected in the number of card payments which increased by 117 million, equating to a rise in spending of £4.6 billion on Q3. There were 3.0 billion debit card transactions amounting to £120.4 billion in Q4, up from 2.9 billion transactions for £116.3 billion in Q3. Credit card transactions numbered 862 million, amounting to £47.7 billion, up from 847 million transactions of £47.2 billion in the previous quarter. Expenditure in the services sector rose by 4.4% (£3.9 billion), with the majority (£2.6 billion) coming from the other services sub-sector, mainly driven by higher spending on government services and telecommunications. Spending in entertainment (restaurants, cinema & theatre) also grew notably, (up by £0.7 billion or 4.7%). Meanwhile, spending in the retail sector grew by 1.0% (£0.8 billion), mainly due to increased spending on food & drink and petrol, which were up by £0.3 billion and £0.4 billion respectively. On an annual basis transactional activity on payment cards continued to grow strongly, by 10.3%, slightly down from 11.3% a year ago. Likewise, the rate of growth in spending continued, but at a slower pace, falling to an annual rate of 4.2%, down from 8.1% in Q4 2015. This underlying deceleration has been driven by a slowdown in the rate of growth of spending on services, following double digit growth in 2014 and 2015. The average transaction value (ATV) for all payment cards decreased during the quarter by 11p, to £43.47. The ATV for debit cards increased, rising by 4p to £40.12. In contrast the ATV on credit cards continued on long term decline, falling by 44p to £55.20. This decline has in part been driven by increased adoption and usage of contactless cards, which grew three-fold during the year. Credit card lending (seasonally adjusted) Gross lending increased on Q3, averaging £15.6 billion per month up from £15.4 billion in the previous quarter. Net lending (gross lending net of repayments and other adjustments) slowed down significantly in December, though the monthly average was unchanged on the previous quarter at approximately £450 million per month. Lending was also depressed last December, a dynamic most likely driven by displaced Christmas spending into November via the online channel, with events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Credit card outstandings resumed steady growth at the beginning of 2015. It is difficult to be certain if this signals natural growth, as this increase follows three upward revisions by the Bank of England, between July 2013 and October 2014 - the result of changes in the reporting population. At the end of Q4 outstandings stood at £66.6 billion, up by £0.8 billion on the previous quarter. This total can be split into interest bearing and non-interest bearing. Around 45% of this total was non-interest bearing3 in the fourth quarter. Additionally, this total accounted for just 4.4% of total personal sector outstandings (£1,516 billion), a proportion which has consistently declined since peaking at around 6.0% in 2002. 1 2 Growth rates are based on rolling twelve months https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdomesticproductgdp 3 Source: The British Bankers' Association © Copyright 2017 The UK Cards Association Table 1 Spending in the UK on credit cards and debit Seasonally adjusted • Payment card spending amounted to £168.2 billion generated from a record 3.9 billion transactions • Card spending accounted for 76.4% of national retail sales by the end of Q4 • ATVs continued declining, driven by changing consumer habits and increasing use of contactless cards Number of purchases (million) Value of purchases (£ billion) Average purchase value (£) Debit cards Credit cards Total Debit cards Credit cards Total 2010 2011 2012 6,512 7,231 7,860 2,013 2,256 2,372 8,525 9,488 10,232 290.1 324.1 345.6 128.1 151.3 152.9 418.2 475.4 498.5 44.55 44.81 43.97 63.65 67.07 64.46 49.06 50.11 48.72 2013 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 2013 Total 2,010 2,050 2,108 2,163 8,330 616 632 646 655 2,549 2,626 2,682 2,754 2,817 10,879 90.3 92.4 94.2 96.1 373.1 38.9 39.7 40.2 40.6 159.5 129.3 132.1 134.5 136.7 532.6 44.95 45.08 44.70 44.44 44.79 63.22 62.81 62.33 62.03 62.59 49.24 49.26 48.83 48.53 48.96 2014 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 2014 Total 2,239 2,287 2,329 2,385 9,240 673 689 706 730 2,799 2,912 2,977 3,034 3,116 12,039 98.3 100.0 101.9 103.5 403.8 42.1 42.2 42.4 43.5 170.3 140.4 142.2 144.3 147.1 574.0 43.92 43.72 43.76 43.41 43.70 62.48 61.28 60.12 59.62 60.84 48.21 47.79 47.56 47.21 47.68 2015 Q1 Q2 Q3 2,458 2,526 2,603 757 776 796 3,215 3,302 3,399 107.3 109.8 110.6 44.8 45.3 45.7 152.1 155.1 156.2 43.67 43.48 42.47 59.18 58.35 57.36 47.32 46.97 45.96 Oct Nov Dec 2015 Total 886 892 897 10,262 269 270 271 3,140 1,155 1,163 1,168 13,402 37.2 37.2 37.1 439.2 15.2 15.2 15.1 181.3 52.4 52.4 52.2 620.5 41.98 41.69 41.37 42.80 56.64 56.16 55.63 57.73 45.39 45.06 44.68 46.30 Jan Feb Mar 902 908 916 268 270 272 1,170 1,178 1,188 37.0 37.1 37.2 15.0 15.0 15.0 52.0 52.1 52.2 41.05 40.82 40.60 56.00 55.54 55.23 44.48 44.19 43.95 Apr May Jun 926 936 946 274 276 278 1,200 1,212 1,224 37.4 37.7 38.0 15.1 15.2 15.3 52.5 52.9 53.3 40.39 40.26 40.18 55.09 55.07 55.11 43.75 43.64 43.57 Jul Aug Sep 956 966 978 281 282 284 1,237 1,249 1,262 38.3 38.7 39.2 15.7 15.8 15.8 54.0 54.5 55.0 40.12 40.08 40.08 55.83 55.76 55.63 43.69 43.63 43.58 Oct Nov Dec 2016 Total 989 1,001 1,012 11,434 286 287 289 3,349 1,275 1,288 1,301 14,783 39.7 40.2 40.6 461.0 15.8 15.9 16.0 185.7 55.5 56.1 56.5 646.7 40.10 40.14 40.12 40.32 55.49 55.35 55.20 55.44 43.55 43.53 43.47 43.74 2016 Debit cards Credit cards Chart 1.1 Chart 1.2 Total spending on payment cards Total payment card transactions Annual growth rates Annual growth rates 20% All cards 15% 15% 10% 10% 5% 5% 0% 0% Dec 08 Dec 09 Dec 10 Dec 11 Dec 12 Dec 13 Credit value Dec 14 Dec 15 -5% Dec 16 Dec 08 Chart 1.3 28 16 12 8 4 Payment Cards Dec-12 Dec-13 Dec-14 Dec-15 Cash & other payments Annual growth rates for 2011 have been adjusted in charts 1.1 and 1.2 to take account of a change in reporting population in January 2011. 0 Dec-16 £ billions 20 Dec-11 Dec 12 Dec 13 Dec 14 Dec 15 -5% Dec 16 Debit volume This table shows spending in the UK on payment cards as reported to The UK Cards Association by the banks and other institutions that process card purchases on behalf of UK merchants, retailers and other service providers.
