In these 3 months, I have grown tremendously as a rugby player, athlete

I trusted that JCU would enable me to explore the
Great Barrier Reef, yet I never predicted that I would
be working closely with one of the reef’s most mysterious inhabitants: the flatback marine turtle…. I arrived in Australia as an undergraduate and will leave
as a published author, and I am extremely thankful to
Rob, Hector and IFSA-Butler for these opportunities.

I never thought I could be involved in a project like this, since I am not a marine biology
student, but studying abroad is full of surprises! I am so thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to work with prominent researchers and help out Australian sea turtles.

Equal second place
James Cook University
Cairns

Lafayette College
This opportunity has taught me so much about The Great Barri-
er Reef and one of their most prized animals as I have been able
to witness my academic studies come to life. I am proud to say
that many of these turtles will likely be released by July! I
couldn’t be more ecstatic that my support has made an impact
here.

Rachel Maschler—Winner. University of Sydney. Home School: Barnard College.
I have walked the streets of Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown, immersed myself in the
lush rainforest, the glacial regions, and mountainous areas of New Zealand’s west and east coasts, ambled
along the quintessential alleyways in Melbourne, and look forward to strolling along the pristine beaches of
Fraser Island, walking the untouched beauty of Tasmania, and to wandering beneath the bright skies of
Uluru. Although my feet may tire, my mind and heart have never been more alive and eager to see more of
the diverse places, people, cultures, and environments of the world.

I didn’t want to let anything hold me back during this semester and
I feel like I have had great adventures without even having to travel
that far. There is so much to see in Australia, but all the parts of
Cairns blew me away by themselves. I had so much fun.

I took a class about monism and wrote a children's book
about nature and started going to the gym. I've gotten
the chance to help conservation research (sea turtles specifically!) and care for animals at Billabong. I've also gotten to participate in the art scene in Townsville through
a poetry slam …

All areas of the world have their own distinct
vegetation but the differences are often too subtle that they escape our notice. It sounds a little
strange to say but one of the things I will miss
the most when I leave Australia is the trees and
the feel of the bush beneath my boots.
Each Semester we run a wonderful Photo Competition where students submit favourite
photo’s from their semester abroad. The winning photo’s from
semester 1, 2015 are featured below.
