Read more about the winning entries at: http://australia.ifsa-butler.org/student-of-the-semester/winning-entries/ Category: Spectacular Sports Star Kevin Hutchinson—Winner Australian National University Home School: Wesleyan University In these 3 months, I have grown tremendously as a rugby player, athlete and leader on the team and I know that I will carry all of these memories with me forever when I return back to the states. Chloe Nash Winner James Cook University. Townsville Home School: Wesleyan University Category: Valiant Volunteer I trusted that JCU would enable me to explore the Great Barrier Reef, yet I never predicted that I would be working closely with one of the reef’s most mysterious inhabitants: the flatback marine turtle…. I arrived in Australia as an undergraduate and will leave as a published author, and I am extremely thankful to Rob, Hector and IFSA-Butler for these opportunities. Casey Schuller Equal second place James Cook University Townsville Home School: Colorado College I never thought I could be involved in a project like this, since I am not a marine biology student, but studying abroad is full of surprises! I am so thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with prominent researchers and help out Australian sea turtles. Hayley Root Equal second place James Cook University Cairns Home School: Lafayette College This opportunity has taught me so much about The Great Barri- er Reef and one of their most prized animals as I have been able to witness my academic studies come to life. I am proud to say that many of these turtles will likely be released by July! I couldn’t be more ecstatic that my support has made an impact here. Category: Academic Achiever Samantha Wu Winner University of Melbourne Home School: Princeton University Writing my spring Junior Paper in a different academic environment and schedule has enriched my undergraduate academic journey by teaching me organizational skills and instilling me with more academic independence. Sherri Chanelle Brighthaupt Special Mention University of Melbourne Home School: Columbia University Sherri found an unpaid internship in how to prevent drug related harm and worked with The Penington Institute, a non for profit harm reduction organisation that focuses on drug policy and drug use in Australia. Page 3 Category: Terrific Traveler Rachel Maschler—Winner. University of Sydney. Home School: Barnard College. I have walked the streets of Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown, immersed myself in the lush rainforest, the glacial regions, and mountainous areas of New Zealand’s west and east coasts, ambled along the quintessential alleyways in Melbourne, and look forward to strolling along the pristine beaches of Fraser Island, walking the untouched beauty of Tasmania, and to wandering beneath the bright skies of Uluru. Although my feet may tire, my mind and heart have never been more alive and eager to see more of the diverse places, people, cultures, and environments of the world. Casey Schuller Equal second place James Cook Uni Townsville Home School: Colorado College Kayla Schlenz 2nd place University of Melbourne Home School: Wesleyan University I didn’t want to let anything hold me back during this semester and I feel like I have had great adventures without even having to travel that far. There is so much to see in Australia, but all the parts of Cairns blew me away by themselves. I had so much fun. Category: Awesome Artist Lauren Charnow Winner University of Melbourne Home School: Skidmore College My time in Australia has been filled with learning new skills, volunteering, performing, and meeting new people. The people here are incredible and new experience are everywhere all you have to do is get out and explore. Category: Open Observer Julia Dunn Winner James Cook University Home School: Bates College I took a class about monism and wrote a children's book about nature and started going to the gym. I've gotten the chance to help conservation research (sea turtles specifically!) and care for animals at Billabong. I've also gotten to participate in the art scene in Townsville through a poetry slam … Samantha Wu 2nd Place University of Melbourne Home School: Princeton University All areas of the world have their own distinct vegetation but the differences are often too subtle that they escape our notice. It sounds a little strange to say but one of the things I will miss the most when I leave Australia is the trees and the feel of the bush beneath my boots.
