The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer
Enjoy the humor, action and excitement of life in Missouri in the late 1840’s. All of Tom Sawyer’s
adventures are dramatized, including the fight with Jeff, romance with Becky, white-washing the
fence, getting in trouble with Huck Finn, and – of course – the turmoil with the fierce villain Injun
Joe! A true American classic, Mark Twain’s tale comes to life on stage, capturing the flavor of the
period. Approximately 75 minutes.
Characters (in order of appearance)
Jeff Thatcher – 14, new boy in town
Tom Sawyer – 14 or 15, just becoming painfully aware of girls & their attraction. More interested in
“fun” than school & chores. An orphan who, with his brother, is being raised by Aunt Polly.
Mrs. Thatcher – Late 30’s to mid-40’s. Jeff & Becky’s mother, and the wife of Judge Thatcher
Becky Thatcher – 12 or 13, pretty, soft blonde, extremely feminine. Accustomed to being her
father’s darling and strongly attracted to Tom
Aunt Polly – middle-aged, large, warm homey woman and a widow. Concern for her daughter and
nephews causes her speak with more acid than she intends. Overly tolerant of Sid and
completely frustrated with Tom
Sid Sawyer – Tom’s younger brother. Spoiled, snotty and a tale-bearer
Cousin Mary – Aunt Polly’s only child. Older than Tom, a high school graduate. Combination
housemaid and peacemaker in the home
Ben Rogers, Joe Harper, Jim Hollis – 11-15, Tom’s buddies
Ted Austin – 9-10, tags along with the older boys, particularly Joe Harper
Amy Lawrence – 13, brunette, budding beauty and completely aware of it! Outrageous flirt,
particularly with Tom. Catty and snide when faced with competition from Becky
Lyda Hollis – 12 or 13, Amy’s sidekick. Boys are a nuisance to her so far
Widder Douglas – Same age as Aunt Polly, widowed for years. Childless, lonely, charitable and
loving. The village “do-gooder”
Preacher – Mid-20’s, handsome. Attracted to Cousin Mary
Judge Thatcher – Late-40’s to mid-50’s, tall, lean and distinguished. Speaks with rhetorical flair of a
seasoned politician
Hope Austin, Susie Harper, Sally Rogers, Faith Harper – 11-15, village girls
Huck Finn – 12, orphan. Disliked by other parents as a bad influence. Tom’s buddy, both dislike
school and like fishing and adventures
Schoolmaster – strict, stern and disliked by most children
Doc Robinson – scientist driven to body-snatching for lab experiments
Injun Joe – “the meanest man in town.” Has no conscience or pity for others. Feared by all but Muff
Potter
Muff Potter – Town drunk, hopeless derelict. Drawn to Injun Joe by their common rejection by the
villagers. Basically a kind man
Constable – 20-50, typical small-town redneck. Probably hold his job because the thought of
hanging a man is not repugnant to him
*Most characters, except for Tom Sawyer, may be cast with female actors.
