Characters (in order of appearance) Jeff Thatcher – 14, new boy in town Tom Sawyer – 14 or 15, just becoming painfully aware of girls & their attraction. More interested in “fun” than school & chores. An orphan who, with his brother, is being raised by Aunt Polly. Mrs. Thatcher – Late 30’s to mid-40’s. Jeff & Becky’s mother, and the wife of Judge Thatcher Becky Thatcher – 12 or 13, pretty, soft blonde, extremely feminine. Accustomed to being her father’s darling and strongly attracted to Tom Aunt Polly – middle-aged, large, warm homey woman and a widow. Concern for her daughter and nephews causes her speak with more acid than she intends. Overly tolerant of Sid and completely frustrated with Tom Sid Sawyer – Tom’s younger brother. Spoiled, snotty and a tale-bearer Cousin Mary – Aunt Polly’s only child. Older than Tom, a high school graduate. Combination housemaid and peacemaker in the home Ben Rogers, Joe Harper, Jim Hollis – 11-15, Tom’s buddies Ted Austin – 9-10, tags along with the older boys, particularly Joe Harper Amy Lawrence – 13, brunette, budding beauty and completely aware of it! Outrageous flirt, particularly with Tom. Catty and snide when faced with competition from Becky Lyda Hollis – 12 or 13, Amy’s sidekick. Boys are a nuisance to her so far Widder Douglas – Same age as Aunt Polly, widowed for years. Childless, lonely, charitable and loving. The village “do-gooder” Preacher – Mid-20’s, handsome. Attracted to Cousin Mary Judge Thatcher – Late-40’s to mid-50’s, tall, lean and distinguished. Speaks with rhetorical flair of a seasoned politician Hope Austin, Susie Harper, Sally Rogers, Faith Harper – 11-15, village girls Huck Finn – 12, orphan. Disliked by other parents as a bad influence. Tom’s buddy, both dislike school and like fishing and adventures Schoolmaster – strict, stern and disliked by most children Doc Robinson – scientist driven to body-snatching for lab experiments Injun Joe – “the meanest man in town.” Has no conscience or pity for others. Feared by all but Muff Potter Muff Potter – Town drunk, hopeless derelict. Drawn to Injun Joe by their common rejection by the villagers. Basically a kind man Constable – 20-50, typical small-town redneck. Probably hold his job because the thought of hanging a man is not repugnant to him *Most characters, except for Tom Sawyer, may be cast with female actors.
