To the teachers
In this material we intend to work with translation issues. In order that, some
exercises related to Translation Modalities were organized trying to shed lights on
students’ difficulties to deal with the rendering process.
The activities might be used to students attending classes in high school at
the stage of Second Grade in Public Schools of Paraná.
According to Barbosa (2004) “We all have an idea of what translation is or
how it should be”... although this wise quotation a source text write in English, for
example, can be seen as an incomprehensible text to the ones who are engaged
into the understanding process of such text due to translation difficulties they have
to face.
From this perspective, the necessity to build a pedagogical material where
some translation training could be put into consideration, trying to develop
rendering abilities was our focus of attention. This can be done to teach English as
a second language taking advantages of a selection of texts by means of Corpus
Linguistics methodology.
Actually, Corpus Linguistics will be used as an electronic tool by means of
COMPARA, which is a parallel corpus written in English and Portuguese. In fact, it
is kind of data base with original texts. It could be used as a wide resource to
research translation solutions an so on. We hope that the teachers and students
take advantages from kind of methodology. At least …..
To the students;
In this pedagogical material we are going to work with texts, phrases and
songs to understand translation facilities. So, we are going to study some ways to
understand the translation process. Firstly, we need to understand that there are
kinds of modalities used for the best translators to face translation difficulties.
This material will give you some ideas to solve activities and build your
knowledge exploring the translation modalities. We will explore texts in what some
words do not have translation in the context, but we will try to teach you how you
can work with them.
You know that in our global world we use English in our daily routine and
many times we are not aware that this language makes part of our lives. Some
examples are technical words that are used worldwide especially in the new
technological areas.
So, of course we need to learn about translation strategies, as well as, we
need to value translator as a job. A good translator can earn money and status with
his or her work, as well as, to understand our modern world better. So how good at
translation are you?
In this task we are going to have a Translation Experiment. Follow these
instructions:

You cannot talk or share information with your classmates.

Now ask your teacher to write on the blackboard what you write on your material. As you
can see each one have a different idea to translate the pictures. So, this experiment was
about fidelity. If fidelity is difficult to discuss can you imagine how difficult is to translate a
text being faithful to the original text. Everybody who translates a text will have his or her
point of view or even though different ideas or conceptions to translate.
The answers written on the blackboard can have information gains or information
losses. This happens because the same picture corresponds to different translations. Your
translation is Ok if you keep the same message.
Remember that the first principle about translation is that you need to keep the frame
information. Frame also means structure, so you need to keep it.
According to Gille D (1995), who is a translator related to translation “The minimum
fidelity principle is that a kernel should cover the message. It is because the message that
must be reformulated rather than words.” This activity was somehow based on his work.
Now let´s go on in a discussion. But first read part of a text written in Portuguese.

é uma rede social e servidor para microblogging que permite aos
usuarios que enviem e leiam atualizações pessoais de outros contatos (em textos
de até 140 caracteres, conhecidos como "tweets"), através da própria Web, por
SMS e por softwares específicos instalados em dispositivos portáteis como o Twitterberry
desenvolvido para o Blackberry.As atualizações são exibidas no perfil do usuário em tempo
real e também enviadas a outros usuários que tenham assinado para recebê-las. Usuários
podem receber atualizações de um perfil através do site oficial, RSS,SMS ou programa
especializado. O serviço é grátis na internet, mas usando SMS pode ocorrer cobrança da
operadora telefônica.
Desde sua criação em 2006 por Jack Dorsey, o Twitter ganhou extensa notabilidade
e popularidade por todo mundo. Algumas vezes é descrito como o "SMS da Internet"A
estimativa do número de usuários varia, pois a empresa não informa o número de contas
ativas. Em novembro de 2008, Jeremiah Owyang estimou que o Twitter tenha de 4 a 5
milhões de usuários. Em maio de 2009, um estudo analisou mais de 11 milhões e meio de
contas de usuários. Em fevereiro de 2009 o blog "Compete.com" elegeu o Twitter em
terceiro lugar como rede social mais usada Facebook em primeiro lugar, seguido do My
Space).
Devido ao sucesso do Twitter, um grande número de sites parecidos foram lançados ao
redor do mundo. Alguns oferecem o serviço para um pais específico, outros unem outras
funções, como a partilha de arquivos que era oferecido pelo Pownce. Em janeiro de 2010
foi realizada a primeira conexão e acesso pessoal à Internet de origem espacial, utilizando o
Twitter. O astronautaThimothy Creamer, escreveu "Hello Twitterverse" no serviço de
microblogging, através do endereço do Twitter http://twitter.com/astro_tj. Segundo o grupo
de pesquisa norte-americano Web Ecology, a lingua portuguesa é a segunda mais utilizada
pelo Twitter. Enquanto o estudo da Semiocast mostra que a Língua portuguesa é a terceira
mais utilizada, atrás do Ingles e do Japones.

language. Sometimes we use them without think about their meanings. In some
cases we can make mistakes or even though to create new words that are not
English or Portuguese. So let´s try to translate this some “Anglicism” in

This text is talking, shortly, about Saint Jerome´s life.

eremites" (374-379). He translated the Old
Testament from the Hebrew (382-390).When
the pope died (11 December, 384) Jerome´s
position became a very difficult one.
His harsh criticisms had made him bitter
enemies, who tried to ruin him. After a few
months he was compelled to leave Rome…he
reached, in 386. He settled there in a monastery
near a convent founded by two Roman ladies,
who followed him to Palestine.

First: this text is written in the past tense, as you
know. So it is important for the translation process to
identify the verb tenses in the text. It is because we
have different grammar rules for different languages.
In this case you need to identify them and put them
into your language. Make a review on the text with
your teacher´s help.
Second : there are many Latin words that are familiar
for some languages.
Third: Sometimes there are pictures in the texts that
helps us to understand the context. This process is
called intersemiotic translation.
Fourth: you do not need translate word by word you
can change it a little bit if you keep the message. This
strategy is called MODULATION. Remember the

Translation tip: due to commercial and
cultural reasons many things need some
adaptations and the translators made many
choices to translate. Sometimes they are
lucky and sometimes unlucky.
Let’s talk about some Translation Modalities, because now we are going to work with
some strategies to translate texts in English. You need to understand better some
facilities to learn English using some modalities.
Text 1

posto ao lado. Vamos portanto tentar fazer
uma tradução literal. Use o seu caderno e
um bom dicionário. Usando esta
modalidade de tradução você devera
traduzir palavra por palabra do texto.

Observação: Nem sempre o texto fica
bem organizado em Português quando
usamos esta modalidade. Qualquer dúvida

trabalho de tradutores. Neste texto não é
possível fazer uma Tradução Literal no
texto todo. Portanto, você deverá usar
outras modalidades de tradução para
traduzi-lo. Sugerimos o uso da modalidade
de transposição onde devido a inadequação
gramatical da lingua fonte (Inglês) para a
lingua alvo (Português) são necessnárias
certas reorganizaçoes textuais.

Como você pode perceber nos exemplos
acima em inglês (lingua fonte) devido a
regras gramaticais os adjetivos devem vir
antes do substantivo, no português (lingua
alvo) nem sempre isto acontece. Portanto
você deve transpor as palavras de lugar
devido a regras gramaticais.
Outra modalidade de tradução que você
pode usar neste texto é a o a transcrição.
Considerada o grau zero de tradução, onde
você apenas transcreve de uma língua para a
outra.

Você provavelmente já assistiu filmes do texto 1 e 2. Mas você pensou que
podemos ter problemas relacionados à tradução de “subtitlings”(legendas)?
Vamos descobrir numa leitura rápida que problemas poderiam ser estes?
Antes de ler o texto verifique com seu professor o significado destas palavras:
Transcript,Interprets,Written,Meaning,Record,Lectoring,Saying,said,praised,hear,
watches, sentence, rather than, who, spoken, due to, based, arrival, choice, censorship.
Subtitles can be used to translate dialog from a foreign language to the native language of
the audience. It is the quickest and the cheapest method of translating content, and is
usually praised for the possibility to hear the original dialog and voices of the actors.
Translation of subtitling is sometimes very different from the translation of written text.
Usually, when a film or a TV program is subtitled, the subtitler watches the picture and
listens to the audio sentence by sentence. The subtitler may or may not have access to a
written transcript of the dialog. Especially in commercial subtitles, the subtitler often
interprets what is meant, rather than translating how it is said, i.e. meaning being more
important than form. The audience does not always appreciate this, and it can be
frustrating to those who know some of the spoken language, due to the fact that spoken
language may contain verbal padding or culturally implied meanings, in confusing words,
if not adapted in the written subtitles. The subtitler does this when the dialog must be
condensed in order to achieve an acceptable reading speed. i.e. purpose being more
important than form... when translating to English, the subtitler may reformulate the
sentence, add appropriate words and/or use notes... The two alternative methods of
'translating' films in a foreign language are dubbing, in which other actors record over the
voices of the original actors in a different language, and lectoring, a form of voice-over for
fiction material where a narrator tells the audience what the actors are saying while their
voices can be heard in the background. Lectoring is common for television in Russia,
Poland, and a few other East European countries, while cinemas in these countries
commonly show films dubbed or subtitled. The preference for dubbing or subtitling in
various countries is largely based on decisions taken in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
With the arrival of sound film, the film importers in Germany, Italy, France and Spain
decided to dub the foreign voices, while the rest of Europe elected to display the dialog as
translated subtitles. The choice was largely due to financial reasons (subtitling is
inexpensive and quick, while dubbing is very expensive and thus requires a very large
audience to justify the cost)., but during the 1930s it also became a political preference in
Germay, Italy and Spain; an expedient form of censorship that ensured that foreign views
and ideas could be stopped from reaching the local audience, as dubbing makes it possible
to
create
a
dialogue
which
is
totally
different
from
the
