FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE
Winter fuel payments
A tax free benefit available to those aged over 60. You can receive
£200 if aged over 60 and £300 if aged over 80. Paid automatically
in November/December. If you have not received your payment,
contact the helpline on 0845 915 1515.
Cold weather payment
A one-off payment of £25, made when the average temperature is
0°c (32°f) or below, over seven consecutive days. You will qualify for
this payment if you receive the following benefits: pension credit; income
support with a child under 5 years old in your family; income support
with a pensioner premium or disability premium or child tax credit with an
element for a child/young person who is disabled. If you have not received
a payment contact your local pension service or Jobcentre Plus.
Financial Support for Heating
During 2012 there will be a government funded scheme that provides grants
for heating and insulation for people living in their own or privately rented
homes. The funding is only available to those in receipt of certain means
tested benefits. To find out if you qualify, call Warm Front on 0800 316 2805.
Post 2012 the source of funding available for heating will be replaced by
two new schemes called the Green Deal and the Energy Company
Obligation. To find out what’s happening in your area call 0800 988 2881.
Funding for Insulation
Funding is currently available for loft and cavity wall insulation. There are a
number of schemes offering free or subsidised insulation. Call the helpline
number for details of local and national schemes. This funding mechanism
is due to cease at the end of 2012 and as above will be replaced by the
Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation.
Warm home discount
Automatic rebate of £120 paid to those receiving the Guarantee Credit
element of Pension Credit. Those who qualify will receive a letter from the
Department of Work and Pensions and the amount will be deducted from
their winter bill. Those in receipt of other benefits may also qualify for the
Warm Homes Discount, contact the free phone number for advice.
Priority Services Register (PSR)
If you are over 60 you can ask your supplier to put you on the PSR.
This entitles you to a variety of services and if you are on means
tested benefits you may get a free annual gas safety check.

KEEPING YOURSELF WARM AND WELL THIS WINTER
Stay warm - set your thermostat to 18-21 degrees Celsius
Make sure that you and family members have received all appropriate
vaccinations. Your GP surgery can give you advice on this

in case there is a cold snap
Try to have warm drinks and at least one hot meal each day
Dress in plenty of layers and if you wear slippers make sure they are
a snug fit with non slip soles
If you have go outdoors in cold weather wear a hat, gloves and
warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles
Keep active and remove hazards that may cause you to fall
Make sure you have an emergency contact number for a friend
or neighbour in case you need help
KEEPING YOUR HOME WARM & SAFE
Make sure your loft and cavity walls are insulated (there should be 27cm
or 10.5 inches of insulation in the loft) to help keep your home warm
Fit draught proofing to seal the gaps around doors and windows
Read your gas and electricity meters and give the readings to your
energy suppliers. Check your gas and electricity tariffs to see if your

Ensure that you switch off appliances and lights that you are not using
to save energy and reduce your costs
Get your home heating, radiators, boilers and electric heaters serviced
annually by a qualified central heating engineer and have your chimneys
swept at least once every year to reduce the risk of chimney fires
