I fought through the pain in the knee and went down to Vallejo to the Sports Hall of Fame. Billy Gordon ’64 was kind enough to park my car for me so I wouldn’t have to walk far. I didn’t last long… After about two hours I had to call it a night… the pain was just too much, so Billy got my car and I headed for home. So if the coverage of the event is not what you might have expected, my apologies… I just couldn’t hang. That’s really too bad because there were lots of people I wanted to see and wasn’t able to get around to them. The Hilltoppers came out in force to support Mike Zuppan’s induction 2 Bob Mansfield ‘56 anchored this table. Mike Gaul ’61 and friends Hall of Famer Rusty McManus ‘66 Mr. PAL, Mike Kollar SV59 Hank McGraw SV61 and Dave Plump VHS61. 3 Separately these two great athletes were a force to be reckoned with… can you imagine if they’d been on the same team. Actually, they did compete against each other while in high school where they each “starred” for their respective schools. The Apaches played the Hilltoppers twice in basketball and won both games and also beat the much smaller school in baseball. Dave Plump Hank goes up against the legendary Frank Mixon for a rebound Bill Mares ‘60, Ron Scrivne ‘62 and Donna Graham-Scrivner HH64 John Stevens SV62 Billy Gordon ‘64 shows Apache pride. 4 VHS66 classmates Ron Abundiz & Bobby Reynolds I really wish I could have stayed but I couldn’t handle the pain. I’m particularly sorry I didn’t get to cover the VHS ’63 baseball team. I knew most of those guys and I would have loved to visit with them. I did get to see Butch Dunkle for a minute though. Inducted into the 2017 class were Terry Duensing, Mike Zuppan, Bob Robitaille, Draak Davis, Reggie Hubbard, Mike Brown, Gary Young, Armand Chiono. the 1963 Vallejo High School baseball squad, coach Vic Wallace and local biographer Jim Hunt It was a full house and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Score another one for the GVRD. From: Joyce Coggburn SV63 Good morning Harry! Saw you walk into the HOF dinner last night and didn't see you again! I was stuck in the middle of the table and it was difficult to get out! It was a wonderful evening and Jim would have loved it! It made me sad, but I was proud to accept his award! All his teammates were so kind and what a pleasure it was to see all of them and their guests. Thank you for all your help in getting the team inducted! I think they all enjoyed themselves and appreciated your help in making this happen!! Gail and I would like to attend the St. Patrick's Day lunch in Benicia. We appreciate the invitation and will see you and Sally on the 17th. Last year was an unparalleled success with 300+ people showing up at the Vets Hall on Admiral Callaghan Lane and 250 people staying for a very nice buffet lunch served by City Lights. Looking for Sponsors We are now in the process of asking for sponsors for the event as we did last year. We don’t need as much as we brought in last year because we still have a surplus, but if you want to be listed as a sponsor in the program send a check, along with your name as you want it posted, or a name you want to recognize In Memoriam. Sugested donation is $20 but we’ll gratefully accept whatever amount you send in. Make your check payable to Harry Diavatis and mail it to: 5087 Green Meadow Court Fairfield, CA 94534 If you want to serve on the Committee please let We will use the MU and the internet, to me know. In the next Callaghan Lane at 11 a.m. few weeks we will be asking all who plan on attending to register with us to make everything run smoother on the day of the event. ... 7 The Living Tree Memorial Park Interest seems to be growing again and people want to order brick pavers. To place an order I need a minimum of a dozen bricks so we are once again opening up the opportunity to anyone who might want to participate. The bricks are $65 dollars each and may be purchased for yourself or In Memoriam for a friend or classmate. You can find the order form in the PSA section of this MU. If we’re able to place the order within a couple of weeks the pavers should be in place prior to the next VHS Apaches Alumni Day in April. ... A Weekly Report in Support of Change to the Vallejo School Board and Administration The Tangled Web… Time to Topple the Bishop Let me make it abundantly clear… I don’t enjoy politics, be they National or Local. I’ll be much happier when our schools return to some form of normalcy and I can quit writing about them. However, I can’t stand the corruption and arrogance which seems to be a hallmark of the current Vallejo School District Administration under the leadership (?) of Ramona Bishop. There is no question that changes need to be made. Changes which will make our schools safer and more productive. And until these changes are made, you can expect to continue reading about the Vallejo Schools administration which is self-serving, arrogant, corrupt and woefully mismanaged. Someone needs to shine the cleansing light of day on this problem and if it has to be me… so be it. 8 Meanwhile, VCUSD Watchdog Allan Yeap ’89 continues to ask tough questions… From: Allan Yeap Ms. Nunley Chief Financial Officer This purchasing manual (recently given to him) is quite out of date. Does the district have an Escape accounting/tutoring manual so staff knows how to use Escape? 1) The travel procedures guidelines are from 2011. Shouldn't that be updated? 2) The consultant procedures/guidelines are from 2009. Also needs to be updated, no? 3) On page 13 of the manual it says that "Tech support has set up a website. http://www.vcusd.us, that contains current quotes from various vendors for VCUSD standardized equipment, such as printers and toners, computers, multimedia equipment, and networking equipment. Click the third box down on the left hand side of the webpage, Standard Quotes." I don't see that webpage set up nor can I access the quotes. Does this webpage exist per the manual? And per your own bylaws, are there quotes for refurbished equipment as well? I would appreciate acknowledgement of this email. More than happy to cite this as a Public Records Act (PRA) but would prefer a discussion, if easier. …and here’s more from Allan Public Records Request Hello Ms Nunley, Can you explain/document the following: On 3/16/2016 - REQ16-02218 for Sheraton Grand hotel in the amount of $12,751.75. The description says "hotel accommodations for CAAASA PD Summit". 1) Who from VCUSD stayed at the Sheraton Grand? 2) Where is this hotel located? 3) How many people stayed at this conference? 4) How many nights were paid for? 2) It says the resource was from LCAP. Did students stay overnight at the hotel? 3) What is CAAASA PD summit? 9 Please acknowledge receipt of this email. Feel free to pass this letter onto anyone else in order to compile the information. Thank you. Allan, I looked CAAASA up online and here’s what I found: California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators "A Systematic Approach to Academic Success" A Statewide Approach for Success for African American and All Students of Color Last year the event was in Sacramento. How many administrators attended and stayed for $12,751. Are you kidding me? Sacramento is one hour from Vallejo… why couldn’t they have made the drive and saved the district all that money. This year they’re meeting in San Diego and Ramona Bishop is scheduled to be a workshop presenter. Her bio was in the blurb advertising the event. This sounds like a complete rip-off junket for Ramona and her posse. Send Ramona and let her take notes to share upon her return. From: Allan Yeap From 2016-2017 to 2018-2019, VCUSD deficit increases from $695k to $5.493 million. It will be easier to deal with the problem NOW vs waiting until 2018 to figure out how to reduce a $5.493 deficit. Lastly, teachers are the lynchpin that hold this district together. Without enough teachers, VCUSD will continue to lose students. Would any of us want our children to be taught by non- certified teachers or substitutes year round? If budget cuts need to happen, I suggest the board look to ADMINISTRATION first before laying off teachers. You don't have enough teachers as it is. I agree wholeheartedly with Allan. I would go a step further… make ALL administrators responsible for teaching at least one class a day, including Ramona. 10 From: Allan Yeap If you compare the budget projections from last year to this year's projections, you will see that they are quite off. It's not a revenue problem, it's an "expense" issue. Compare FY 2016-17: the revenue projections are somewhat close ($151.8 mil vs $153.6 mil) but the expense projections are more inaccurate ($150.5mil vs $154.3 mil). So the district goes from thinking they have a $3.6 mil increase to a $695k deficit for FY 2016-17. Budget projections are never easy but expenses are where you have more control. Why waste $75,000 on investigating teachers? How much money is spent on conferences and travel? Why buy new computers when refurbished will do? (Imagine if they saved 30% on their tech budget by buying refurbished computers?) Why have 5 vice-principals at VHS? (Imagine if they streamlined management?) I'll have to see if there's a 3rd budget projection but this deficit spending cannot continue. In my opinion, every spending decision should be predicated by: "how will this expense benefit student achievement?" Amen to that, Allan. ... Hmmm… is this Ramona Bishop’s way of fighting back and trying to intimidate the Board? Makes one wonder... From: Marianne Kearney-Brown School Board Trustee Tonight I was told that I was the subject of a possible investigation as a result of an employee complaint. VCUSD BB 9321 states "The Board may also hold a closed session to hear complaints or charges brought against an employee by another person or employee, unless the employee requests an open session. 11 Before the Board holds a closed session on specific complaints or charges brought against an employee, the employee shall receive written notice of his/her right to have the complaints or charges heard in open session if desired. This notice shall be delivered personally or by mail at least 24 hours before the time of the session. (Government Code 54957)" As a board member, I am an employee of the district. Why was I not given 24 hour notice of this complaint? Why was I not given the opportunity to have this complaint presented in open session, which would have been my preference? Ms. Marshall-Freeman said this could be a "whistleblower" situation. Whistleblowers[1] may file complaints that they believe reasonably evidences a violation of a law, rule or regulation; gross mismanagement; gross waste of funds; an abuse of authority; or a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety. Which of these conditions apply to this situation? Ms. Marshall-Freeman and Dr. Bishop told me that I was not to speak of any of this to anyone outside of the closed session room until the investigation was conducted. Why? As an employee, I had the right to have this complaint presented in open session. Which board bylaw, statute, or regulation allows Ms. Marshall-Freeman and Dr. Bishop to decide that I must have the complaint against me heard in closed session and that I must also keep the complaint against me a secret? Who are we protecting? I do not want it to be secret. I want us to follow the law. Let me know as soon as soon as possible if there will be an investigation. Go get ‘em, Marianne. Don’t fall for their scare tactics. We need to get rid of Bishop and her henchmen (women) as soon as possible. They are trying to intimidate the Governing Board. ... “Restorative Justice” is No Justice at All If you want to get outraged, read this article from the New York Post: How Liberal Discipline Policies are Making Schools Less Safe. 12 It seems that Bozo the Clown and his ilk, are now running our schools. http://nypost.com/2015/03/14/politicians-are-makingschools-less-safe-and-ruining-education-for-everyone/ Vallejo schools practice this policy. I’m taking Tylenol several times a day to keep the pain in check. I was told several years ago that eventually I would have to have both knees replaced but, frankly, I’m not ready to do that at present. I would like my legs to be stronger before I go the transplant route, otherwise I’ll really have problems walking and climbing the stairs in our house. What to do… what to do. Okay, well, I finally contacted my doctor and she suggested rubbing some icy/hot on it and taking a bath with Epsom Salts. If I lay down in a bathtub I’d never be able to get up, so that idea is out. She also offered an injection of cortisone, if I want. I don’t know… do I want? I did apply some Ben-Gay… hard to tell if it helps. I’m telling you that living with this pain sucks the joy right out of life. ... The MUD is a Wee Bit Thicker Do you want to know who is subscribed to the MU and what part of the country they live in? It might be a ride worth writing about, similar to "Mr. Toads Wild Ride". It would also be something that the Guiness Book of Records might give a plaque for to represent the insanity of your golden years! Glenn, I think that’s a great idea, but how about this... I’ll rent a 3seater and you can join us. ... From: Linda Tholmer-Anderson ‘62 Hello Harry, I read with interest, the articles about the school board. I was waiting for someone to go after Shackelford. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. I certainly hope enough pressure will be put on the old regime to get rid of all of them. Question: where does all the lottery money go that is supposed to be for public schools? It would be interesting to see how much Vallejo schools receive and how it is spent. 14 ALLOCATION OF CALIFORNIA STATE LOTTERY FUNDS 2011-12 Solano County Grand Jury A predetermined formula separates Lottery funds into two accounts: • Restricted Lottery funds are for the purchase of instructional materials as defined in Education Code §60010. From: Bernie Garber ‘63 Stephanie just got back from her London book tour Saturday and is finishing up the sequel to Caraval. It should come out in about a year. Thank you for your interest. ... From: Kathy Thurman-Robin ‘62 Hi Harry and all. I have always marveled at how God answers prayers. My oldest daughter, Jo Ann, will not have the operation right now. She was sent home to deal with other issues, getting them under control before they will reevaluate her for the operation in about 6 months. We never know what He has in store for us. Thank you all for the prayers. You're right, the cold weather is no friend of arthritis. My doctor gave me some 5% lidocaine which somewhat helps. I have only been able to get it at Kaiser. It is considered an over the counter purchase, but CVS and others are only allowed to carry 4%. ... From: Bessie Pantages-Lurker ‘66 Hi Harry, I just read in your newsletter that Marty Stiewig is asking for me to say “hi”. Please say hi to Marty for me. It is so nice to say hi back to him! He was great to work with at Mare Island. Hope all is good with you, Sally and family. ... From: Ron Evans-G Harry, I have some early CORCORAN family photos that I would be happy to share with Jim Barth. Thanks, Ron… I’ll let them know. Donna Wiggin-Barth ‘58 responds: Thank you Harry - I'm copying this to Jim now. So exciting to have a response so soon and sounds like a good one. 16 ... From: Jim Rookwood ‘60 I had by-pass surgery in 2011 so your daily journal brought back lots of memories. It took me 3 months and still I was hurtin’ and not able to resume a normal life. You have done very well… way better than I did. Hang in there it does get better. Thanks for the MU and your dedication. Jim, my knee is a long way from my heart, and that’s what’s hurting me now. ... From: Louis Popoloski ‘60 Good Morning my friends, I miss football! So instead of watching the Sunday football game, I go shopping with my wife, we have so much fun! I stay in the car, she goes shopping, kidding here, I would miss sparing with her too much! At the deli counter, my wife is ordering some sandwich meats, and as the counter staff is handing the package ham to her, she yells out “CATCH!” Standing in back of the crowd of women, she tosses the package at me, as the other females duck, and just as I look up to see it flying to me, I jump, and make the catch. The guy standing next to my wife sees what is going on and laughs out loud, along with the other females, then my wife and the guy exchange words …they both laugh, and I can’t hear what they are saying. Now I have just recently had a spot of skin cancer from the inside of my ear, the good news? It’s the best cancer (if there is such a thing) to get, the bad news, is the place of the cancer location! The Mos Doctor took the skin down to the cartilage, which is yellow. I have tried every things to cover the wound, but nothing sticks to the ear. I am to keep the wound cover with Vaseline, and not to ever let the wound dry out. So now I just goop it up with a wad of Vaseline, with no bandage. Now back to my wife and the guy she is talking to. I walk up to the two of them standing within the crowd of shoppers and I look at the man and say, “You might think that is funny, buddy, but check out my ear, where she threw a claw hammer at me and look where it hit me!” Now it was my turn to laugh as I turned to go back to our shopping cart. Last night, as a true Rhode Islander, I know someone that knows a person that won an Oscar! Yes, Viola Davis from our small state. Best Supporting Actress, and in this small state, you always know someone that knows somebody, or you probably know the 17 person themselves. I personally know one of the people that ran for President last time around! We use to duck hunt together. Then after a few years, we worked for the same company and sailed together. Looking forward to getting a new heating system (boiler) this late spring, I wanted to get a heating engineer to look over the home and tell me how many BTU’s I would need. After adding on to this home, I am afraid that I might be over taxing the forced hot water boiler that is as old as this home… some thirty seven years. My wife found that the state has a free consultant on home heating, they will be coming by next week. We will see if my tax dollars are being spent well. I know that with this computer at hand, I and can find all the information to calculate the BTU’s I’ll need. I have done this one time before when I owned the summer home in N. Kingstown. Now I am just the lazy old man. All the snow that was around, disappeared this weekend with the onset of very warm weather, upper 60’s maybe even in the 70’s. Now the ground is all wet and very soft from the thaw. With the three dogs now in residence here, 3X4=12 sets of muddy foot prints! Not only that but the boy dog has found that dipping his feet into the water bowl, gets rid of the mud… more mess, you can’t get mad at him but only to admire his resources! The scary thing is that dogs learn from each other! ... From: Marty Stiewig ‘57 I was up at 4 a.m. because I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. I knew the MU would be in my mailbox so I thought I would peruse the news in Vallejo. Thanks for keeping all of us updated. I have a question about the dog in totally sheer bra… how many cups do you suppose that bra had? Which brings me to this picture: All this time your readers thought you were merely a smart-ass, and it turns out you just have a healthy brain! Well, Martin you actually asked a good question for once and I had to look it up. 18 A female dog has eight to 12 teats with 10 being the average for larger breeds. ... From: Kathleen Sweet ‘63 I hope you’re getting stronger every day. Do you Love your heart pillow. What Kathy is referring to is that Kaiser gives all of their heart operation patients a pillow shaped like a heart that you’re supposed to use when you cough, sneeze etc. I didn’t use it much. ... From: Jane Barlow ‘60 Thank you for your good work for all of us, Harry. I am so glad to hear you are doing better. Summer will soon be here ... everything will be aces by then! Jane, I can’t wait for the warm weather to begin. ... From: Jim Allen ‘56 We go way back but I'm sure you don't remember me. I bought some of the first CD’s for the Genealogy Society of Solano County, plus we have the yearbooks for most of the schools in Solano County at the Genealogy library in Vacaville.. Glad to see you’re on the mend. I just finished surgery on the back and neck and it looks like we both are doing better in our later years.. Keep up the good work. ... From: Brian Biggs ‘59 To: John DeLacy ‘60 Thanks for the run down on all your brothers and sisters. From: Dann Shively SV64 Hi Harry, Glad to see you’re making progress in your recovery, albeit a bit slowly, from surgery. Having only experienced very minor surgery I can’t imagine getting back on track after something as serious as yours. Here’s to continued positive progress. Glad, too, to hear Sally’s feeling better as well. I’ve recently reconnected with one of my high school teachers whom I also knew in childhood. Gary Coronado and I had lunch recently along with his wife, Vi. Gary graduated from Saints in 1957 and returned to teach there in the early and mid ’60’s. As his younger brother Ralph was a classmate and we grew up in the same neighborhood we were familiar with each other from a much younger age. In fact I was in the first grade when he was in the eighth at St Vincent’s grammar school. 20 Here’s a photo (June 12, 1953) showing his graduation class with me and another first grader, Nora Tapp, who were chosen to be assistants at the graduation. He’s in the fourth row, second from the left. He went on spend most of his teaching and coaching career in Marin County. Strange to realize, sometimes, that some of our high school teachers were not that much older than we were. ... From: Brenda Johnson-Green ‘64 Hi Uncle Harry: I am sharing Gabriel and Imani's new favorite video entitled "Kindness Is A Muscle." We haven't yet caught Imani on video yet. She flexes her biceps like the children in the video do. She is sooo funny. Of course, she also dances to the music. Gabriel is captivated and stares in deep concentration. "Kindness Is A Muscle": Sprout, Kids Songs: "Kindness is a Muscle" ft. Aidan Prince, William Alexander, Mimi Ryder | Sprout Here’s a picture of Imani and her 'Fro taken on Thursday, February 23, 2017. For someone with extremely thick and coarse hair, she doesn't like it "adjusted" and combed and brushed. Oh well... not my ballgame. Mom and Papa Leon deal with that. Rhema was easy. I don't like to fight; I like to play:-) 21 Here’s Gabriel standing in my mom's chair (his maternal great-grandmother Vera J. Johnson) on Wednesday, March 01, 2017. This is a series of texts between maternal grandmother Brenda JOHNSON Green and great-aunt Alice JOHNSON Stanberry on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Brenda: GABRIEL!! Standing in Mother's chair on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. He was told to get down and was disciplined. Then he got right back up there again. All boy! Alice: He is all boy and happy to be standing in chair. Brenda: What can we do but love him. He is so funny. This morning no yesterday morning it was rockin' upstairs. He was running back and forth like a Dynamo and then I heard TWO pitter patters. She had joined him. They like to chase each other. Alice: Twins are fun aren't they. Brenda: Most of the time. I was satisfied with Rue though. I just didn't know how interesting and entertaining they could be. I wish I had taken the picture of them the other day when he was crying and Imani was petting him and she kissed him to make him better. Alice: She loves her brother. Brenda: Yep and he loves her although we don't yet see it in action. I can picture him fighting to protect her when he is older--actually her, too. She is quick to lay hands on a person. Alice: They will always be there for one another. Brenda: That is the way it should always be. ... Also, Brenda reports that she saw this on Facebook and wonders if anyone knows Sue Burchfield HH71 so that the ID can be returned. 22 Wait! There’s more… From: Brenda Johnson-Green ‘63 Okay, this is where I am. I found the obituary for Marilyn Sue Burchfield-Sindelar's parents. Last documented information I have is that she lives with her husband Paul in Upland, California . I found her brother David in Benicia and have his physical address. I left a message a few minutes ago for a call back. I also found Sue's address and a possible telephone number and email address. Since all I have is the picture of her ID card and really don't know the person who sent it, that is, except they are on Instagram which I know nothing about, if the family wants to retrieve the ID card, I will turn the picture over to them. Then I move out of the way. I realized a long time ago that the internet is both a blessing and can be a curse when we retrieved my son's information on the internet for less than $10. It took me less than a half an hour to get this much information and I could have gotten more just from my little cell phone. As it turned out, her classmates found her. It would make a nice story for the Monday Update. Just a thought. You know, technology won out again. Way to go, Sherlock Brenda. LOL. ... From: Ben Roesch ‘63 Hi, Harry! Can you give me some advice? I'd like to know which method you use to dry seeds. Do you use the "rinse well & dry" method or the "let it rot a little then rinse 23 and dry" method? Hello Benno: To save my heirloom tomato seeds, I just take the ripe tomato, scoop out the insides with the seeds. I'll harvest the seeds one of two ways: if I'm impatient, and I usually am, I'll put it all in a strainer until I get it down to mostly seeds, then I'll put it on a large plate and using the tip of a knife separate the seeds from the remaining pulp. The other way is to place the pulp and seeds in a glass of water, stir well, and wait a couple of days. The scum floats to the top and the seeds sink to the bottom. Hope this helps. Of course the other option is you eat the tomato and then have Burpee Seed Co. send you more seeds. LOL. You can pretty much do the same with cucumber seeds, but one of the best cuke plants I ever had was last season when it sprung up on its own from one that rotted the previous year. It was extremely prolific and grew up and around my tomato plants. ... It’s very simple, Larry, just go to: http://www.accuweather.com/en/se/swedenweather Glad I could be of help. It describes a situation in which a group of hedgehogs all seek to become close to one another to share heat during cold weather. They must remain apart, however, as they cannot avoid hurting one another with their sharp spines. Though they all share the intention of a close reciprocal relationship, this may not occur, for reasons they cannot avoid.” THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN 1958 ---L-R: Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch seen in back. On February 2, 1959, “the day the music died”, Tommy Allsup flipped a fiftycent piece (remember those?) with Richie Valens to see who would get a seat on the small aircraft Buddy Holly had chartered and who would continue riding on the band’s not-heated tour bus. Tommy lost the toss but went on to enjoy a full life. He just died at age 85. Allsup had given his wallet to Holly to pick up his “general delivery” mail. When it was found at the crash site initial death reports included Allsup. The tour soldiered on for two more weeks with Jennings singing Holly’s songs. Dion and the Belmonts were brought in as headliners. Fresh out of high school, Allsup began his career playing in a Tulsa western swing band. His gifts (and hard work) later led to success in Nashville and Los Angeles recording sessions, including on: “Cathy’s Clown” with the Everly Brothers, “The Gambler” with Kenny Rogers, “Behind Closed Doors” with Charlie Rich, and the 1969 Number One song, “In the Year 2525” with Yager and Evans. One might wonder if Allsup suggested that line in “2525” about “the day the music died”. 26 MY MEAL THE OTHER DAY ---- at the brand-new Lou Lou’s Creperie in Purcelllville, VA was good. It is owned by someone who may have been at Chico State at the same time (’73-’75) as one or two of you readers, Sandy Lerner. From there she went on to study at Claremont and Stanford where she just happened to co-found Cisco Systems. The quick success of this enterprise allowed her to spend the rest of her life doing whatever she pleased. She bought a farm and restored its stately old home near Upperville, VA. The window treatments, draperies, and cushion work for this project was all done by none other than Janelle Kincaid, wife of our ’62 classmate, Ross Kincaid, who did the installlations. Here’s one of the finished rooms 28 Everything produced on the farm is organic. Most of the animals are “rare breeds”. Her Hunter’s Head restaurant nearby is the most authentic British style pub I’ve ever experienced in America. The meats served there are from her farm. Sandy Lerner knows a LOT about Jane Austen. She can expatiate on the social nuance of every different type of carriage mentioned in Austen’s books. From Austen, her interest in women's writing broadened to take in the 10,000 to 15,000 novels published by some 3,000 women from 1600 to 1830. With money now at her disposal, she built up a library of 6,200 rare books and manuscripts. She said, "All of a sudden, Jane Austen made a whole lot more sense. It wasn't like she'd dropped in from outer space with six of the best novels in the English language and left. You could see her in the context of things she'd read." In 1992 Lerner purchased and started a restoration of Chawton House, in the English county of Hampshire which was once owned by Jane Austen’s brother, Edward Austen Knight. It opened in 2003 as the Centre for the Study of Early Women's Writing, 16001830. Its library has a collection of over 9,000 books, mainly related to the genre of women’s writings, and many original manuscripts. The Library works in partnership with the University of Southampton, providing an important resource for the university's MA in 18th Century Study. Lerner was awarded an honorary doctorate by Southampton in recognition of this work In November 2011, she published a sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice titled Second Impressions using the pen name of Ava Farmer (for "a Virginia farmer"). She plans to make it into a movie. Let’s watch for it. THIS FILM SCREENED ---- last week at Reston’s Nature Center. It is excellent and I encourage everyone to see it when you can. It takes you to the places where the inexpensive garments we buy, and their components, are made. As you can guess, the effects on the people who produce the clothing is not a pretty scene. Millions of good people are exploited so a few others can get rich. Think of things like water pollution, soil pollution, pesticide contamination and their impacts on our brothers and sisters in poor countries. The film got started with funding raised in a Kickstarter campaign after the Bangladesh factory 29 named Rana Plaza toppled, killing over a THOUSAND workers. I felt the film ought to have included a part on the role of governments to control what happens in their countries to protect their citizens. You can personally help the situation by purchasing one less shirt or pair of pants this year. SONG OF THE WEEK ---- It is Syncopated Clock, by Leroy Anderson. I have a vivid childhood memory that involves this song. I was at a church-sponsored children’s event on a sunny day in a park in Santa Rosa. There was a choreographed waltz demonstration that the Stuck twins (Susanne and Diane VHS ’61) danced in. They were wearing identical dresses with small red and white stripes. I thought they were pretty. Okay, okay, break it up already! E ver smash a cantaloupe? It makes a real ugly sound. A billy club makes that sound when smashing a skull, especially if the club is wielded by a seriously mean cop. I first heard those cranial chords in May 1965 when all hell broke loose on Telegraph Avenue. I heard it resonating from the cranium of a poor, confused fellow who just happened to be standing behind me and Bobby Seale … a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You could say the guy was a half-step slow, but I think it was confusion. You see, when a busy, major street is blockaded for five or so blocks, street lights are doused, cops stand with weapons scanning the street from the rooftops, hundreds of cops in assault gear assemble on the street, and sidewalks teem with protestors ready for a rumble … that’s when confusion itself becomes the organizing principal of the day. Nothing was normal, and the melodrama unfolding in front of my eyes gave my brain such a vast array of sensory information that it slowed its task of assimilating and sorting through all of it. You really couldn’t fault anyone for being confused . 31 Not only that. I stood next to Mr. Big Big Trouble … one Bobby Seale, co-founder of a militant social group called The Black Panthers. This relatively new, infamously strident, semi-terrorist bunch of radicalized separatists had become a target of the Oakland cops … with Mr. Seale at its bullseye. OPD’s view of Bobby Seale Of course some of the group’s fund raising activities had been characterized as racketeering which made the group subject to some deserved special scrutiny. But, all that legal stuff aside, there was one universal rule in the East Bay … “Avoid the attention of Oakland cops at all costs.” They even had a special nickname for them, the Blue Meanies (after the blue, badge-less jump suits they wore into battle, later made infamous by their depiction in an animated Beatle movie called “Yellow Submarine”). It was a name they’d repeatedly earned. All of this made standing next to Mr. Seale himself uncomfortable in a very bad way … though it greatly simplified my thinking, that is to say I narrowed it all down to just two basics: starting and foot speed. Unsurprisingly these turned out to be Mr. Seale’s thoughts as well, so that when the signal whistles blew and all hell to broke loose we instantaneously started to dodge and weave like weasels caught in a hen house. When the Meanies charged, swinging their clubs like Cubans with machetes in a sugar cane field, the blow intended for Mr. Seale’s skull struck the cranium of that unfortunate chap standing just behind us, which produced that memorable dull, cantaloupesmashing-on-a-big-rock chord. Ugly! Ike was right ! It really was a dumb idea! As I made my way through the chaos and confusion unfolding all around, blinded by a large, expanding envelope of tear gas, I lost some of my enthusiasm for supporting those French students and actually started to debate whether it was worth all the bother. And if the damned riot hadn’t been ignited by open and flagrant dissembling by the authorities in charge, I would have had little sympathy or stomach for any of it. But there you have it, a young man filled with ideological sensitivities and beliefs that spontaneously ignite into whole-body passions and drive him into situations where, 32 when he finally looks up and pays attention, make him think “what in the hell am I doing?” And so it was with me as I ran up Channing Way to escape that chaos below, one that would engulf Berkeley for two more years with tear gas, activists, cops, the world press, protestors and the California National Guard all playing their parts. That afternoon marked the beginning of violent protests that quickly mutated into a revolt against military involvement in what President Eisenhower called a really dumb idea …. a civil war ten thousand miles across an ocean in a tropical jungle. He was right … dead right. Vietnam was not only a dumb idea, it was an unforgivably tragic chapter in our national life. ——————– NEXT WEEK: PART 14 OF “BERKELEY, THE SIXTIES AND ME” IT WASN’T ALL FUN AND RIOTS ... Later, after examining the man's elderly wife, the doctor said to her: "Your husband had an unusual concern. A Stroll Down History Lane… A place to share your memories… before they disappear forever. From: James L. “Jim” Danley-G Vista, CA Dear Harry, My name is Jim Danley. A cousin of mine forwarded to me the article that was written in her high school weekly newsletter regarding the CORCORAN family. I am writing in hopes that you might forward my information to Jim Barth. I am trying to piece together the CORCORAN family. My maternal uncle was Edward William Corcoran. While the California birth index has his name as William E. Corcoran (b. 25 Jan 1911 in San Francisco, CA) the California death index has his name as Edward W. Corcoran (d. 24 Oct 1990 in Vallejo, CA). I 35 don’t know if he had his name officially changed, but I only knew him as Edward William Corcoran. He married my mother’s sister, Dorothy Lee Walker. He was the son of William Edward Corcoran (1871-1955) and Mary L. Connolly (c.1876-1928). I have that William Edward Corcoran was the son of Patrick Corcoran (1823-1888) and Mary Elizabeth Williams (1832-1913). Patrick Corcoran and his wife had 10 children. Two other sons were named John Simon Corcoran and Daniel Corcoran. My uncle and his grandfather are buried in Saint Vincent’s Cemetery in Vallejo. There is also a Daniel Corcoran (1833-1903) and his wife, Margaret Barrett Corcoran (?-1903) buried in Saint Vincent’s Cemetery (per FindAGrave.com). Since Patrick Corcoran has a son named Daniel, I am wondering if the Daniel Corcoran who is buried in Saint Vincent’s Cemetery might have been a brother of Patrick Corcoran’s. It is worth noting that both Patrick Corcoran and Daniel Corcoran were born in County Cork, Ireland. I further wonder if this Daniel Corcoran is the Daniel Corcoran who, along with his brother, Simon Corcoran, bought the two Spanish Land Grants in 1887. ... From: Steve White-G A few weeks ago, Frank Darling (HH66), wrote to remind us about the noble and tragic history of the iconic WWII heavy cruiser, USS Indianapolis. This is a ship whose west coast port was Mare Island. The Indy visited MI for overhaul and refitting several times during the war. My father, a civilian outside machinist, worked on the Indy on more than one of those occasions, including her final visit before that historic and fatal mission in 1945. It may be of interest to Vallejoans that on April 4 and 5 the Mare Island Naval Shipyard Museum will be showing the new documentary, USS Indianapolis, The Legacy. This is NOT - repeat NOT - the recent dreadful bomb, USS Indianapolis, Men of Courage. Instead, it is a labor of love involving some of the survivors, rescue personnel and family, some of whom are expected to attend. The producer, Sarah Vladic, will also be on hand. I wish I could be there for this, but will be happy to see it at the GI Film Festival in the DC area over the Memorial Day weekend. ... The person who sent this next message did not sign it and I didn’t recognize the email address so I can properly credit it. Hi Harry. Last December, was the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, by the Imperial Japanese Navy. But the first shots fired by the United States in World War II, were by the US Navy. Actually, by the USS Ward (DD-139), that was on patrol at the entrance to Pearl Harbor, early in the morning of December 7, 1941. The Ward at this time was commanded by Lieutenant Commander William W. Outerbridge, with the rest of the crew comprised of Minnesota Navy reservist. At about 4:00 AM, the Ward was advised by the USS Condor, a minesweeper, that they had sighted a periscope in the area. The 37 Ward went on full alert and began a search. At about 6:30 AM the Ward saw a periscope tailing a U.S. cargo ship, in an attempt to enter Pearl Harbor, behind the cargo ship. The Ward went into full attack mode and fired from its 4 inch/50 Caliber deck guns, first from turret 1 (that missed) and then from turret 3, that hit the conning tower of a Ko-hyoteki class Japanese two-man submarine, then attacked with depth charges, and eventually sunk the submarine. The Navy brass never gave the Ward the right credit, until researchers from the University of Hawaii, found the submarine in 1,200 feet of water, about 3 miles from the Pearl Harbor entrance. After the Pearl Harbor attack, the Ward was sent to the West Coast for conversion to a high speed, fast attack transport and re-designated APD-16, after the deck turret guns were removed and replaced with newer armament. She was then transferred to the Southwest Pacific for duties and assaults that included Cape Gloucester, Biak and Morotai, to name a few. On December 7, 1944, three years to the day after the Pearl Harbor attack, she was assigned to the landings at Ormoc Bay, Philippines, when she was hit amidships by a kamikaze bomber. The crew fought the fire, to no avail, and the Ward had to be scuttlesunk by gunfire from USS O’Brien (DD-725). The O’Brien now was commanded by the same William W. Outerbridge, that was the Ward’s commanding officer during the Pearl Harbor attack. So, you might ask why this ship of all the ships that fought in World War II, holds any interest to the MU. Well, this ship was built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, during World War 1. It was built in a record setting time of 17.5 days, with its keel-laying on May 15, 1918 and its launching on June 1, 1918. So, some of our grandparents, and great uncles/aunts of VHS graduates probably worked on this ship, the first US ship to fire the first shots of World War II! Oh, and if you are ever in the State Capitol of St. Paul, Minnesota, you can view the No. 3 Turret of the USS Ward, because it is there as a monument. 38 ... CLEVELAND, Ohio- A massive crime spree was uncovered and prosecutors say the ringleader is just 14-years-old. Three teens are facing a total of 133 charges. Prosecutors say they were involved in dozens of aggravated robberies and carjackings. "In one case they robbed a mother in front of her three young children," said the Asst. County Prosecutor. "They wanted to steal her car, they held her there at gun point, they pulled her from the vehicle, and they pistol whipped her in front of her children. A 7-year-old child then got out of the vehicle and told the young offender don't kill my mother. The young offender pulled the weapon on the 7-year-old and held him there at gun point."5 PHO 39 TOS The crimes were committed in just about a month. Prosecutors say the crime spree started January 18th and ended February 20th, when arrests were made. "I could tell they were babies but they had guns," said Jeanette Jordan, a manager at Angie's Soul Cafe. "I am praying for them." Officials believe Jordan was one of dozens of victims. The teens are facing charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping. I certainly hope they are charged as adults. Your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime in Cleveland are 1 in 63. Stages of Life Sharon Gordon along with Suzie Schmutz, a few years ago began ending their email notes with "live, laugh and love." A philosophy began trending culturally in the U.S.A, probably 41 originating for the most part among our generation. It portends what past generations have gone through, 'stages of life.' We are no exception, going through these stages, but my hope is we pass to one another this stage that's maybe unique to us now, to "live, laugh and love." We lose loved ones that are irreplaceable. But turn a corner and there stands someone, maybe with inquisitive eyes, searching ours, looking to give what we've lost. Over a period of time, members of companion classes (1960, ’61, ’63, and ’64) and from Hogan and St. Vincent’s, indicated an interest and began participating. Today the Monday Update has a wide and varied range of readership ranging from 1940 and into the new millenium. We also have several “guests” who have no direct affiliation with Vallejo, whatsoever, but are able to relate to the era.. Anyone who has an interest in, or is nostalgic for, our era is welcomed to participate. Back issues from as far back as 2007 are available on line at www.VHS62.com To subscribe to the MU go to www.VHS62.com and click on the Link- Sign Up for Our Email Newsletter.” OR go to: http://tinyurl.com/Mondayupdate There is no charge for accessing the Update… just the expectation that subscribers will occasionally “contribute” something to the overall effort, such as a personal update, archival pictures, news, memories, anecdotes, true confessions etc… anything that may be somehow relevant or interesting to our readership as a whole. The Editor reserved the right to print, delete, or edit contributions at his discretion and is solely responsible for the content of the Update. If you send us an email and DO NOT want it published in the Update please be sure to state as much, and we will respect your wishes. The MU respects your privacy. Personal information, including email addressess and phone numbers, will not be given out without your permission. The Monday Update is not financed by, nor does it necessarily reflect the opinions of: Vallejo High School; the VHS Class of 1962; or the VHS ’62 Reunion Committee. (And it sure as hell doesn’t reflect the Vallejo School Board!) ... The Official VHS Class of ’62 Web Site http://www.classreport.org/usa/ca/vallejo/vhs/1962 Administrator: Bill Strong Asst.
