Connect 3 Syllables Introducing Connect 3 Syllables Congratulations on your purchase of Really Good Literacy Center-in-a-Bag™ Connect 3 Syllables, a hands-on activity that strengthens your students’ ability to read multi-syllabic words. Connect 3 Syllables provides a fun setting for students to practice identifying and blending syllables to make and write words. First, students place 4 Cards in the designated columns printed on the Card backs. After reading the word Cards placed in the Word Column, students pick up a syllable Card from Column 1 and pick up or point to a syllable Card from Column 2 to see if it makes the beginning of a word shown in the Word Column. Continue to move or point Cards to make a whole word using syllable Cards in all 3 Columns. Once a match is found for one of the word Cards, students write the word on the corresponding line. Students continue this practice until 3 words have been made. There are 5 levels of play, from easy to extremely hard, depending on which Cards and which side of the Mat you use. Connect 3 Syllables is an individual or a small group activity. Objective Students will make words using multiple syllable patterns. Meeting State Standards This type of practice in identifying and blending familiar syllable patterns helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for standardized testing. Connect 3 Syllables can also help improve spelling and advanced phonics skills. This Really Good Stuff® product includes: • 2 Write Again® Mats • 5 Color-coded Card Sets • 2 Dry Erase Crayons • Center Task Card • This Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide Model the Activity Begin by choosing the correct level of play for your individual student or partners. (Easy level is described here for demonstration.) Then select 1 Color-coded Card Set and read through the word Cards. Be sure to define any unfamiliar words. Set up the Cards using the Write Again® Mat and the column numbers found on the back of the Cards. Review the syllable patterns written on each Card in the columns. Show students how to move a syllable Card from Column 2 and try it with syllables in Column 1, looking for the beginning of a word from the Word Column. Once you have the beginning of a word, move Cards from Column 3 to complete it. Decide if the word made matches a word that you see in the Word Column. Have students place the 3 Cards in the right order on the Mat and write that word using the Dry Erase Crayon. Practice together until 3 words have been made. Remind students that it is important to identify syllable patterns and then blend them together to read big words. Then, by writing the word, students see the word as a whole and reinforce the spelling pattern. If you decide to move to more difficult level of play, remember to model first how the activity will change. Identifying and blending syllable patterns are necessary skills in reading multi-syllabic words. With Connect 3 Syllables, readers have fun building words with various syllable patterns. They also receive practice in encoding by writing these syllables on their Write Again® Mats. Through repeated play, students build essential skills required to read longer words.
