I am constantly amazed by the way 4-H is adapting and changing to meet the needs and interests of today’s youth and the world they are growing into. New programs like Teens Teaching Youth AgriScience and Biotechnology and the 4-H National Youth Science Day Eco-Bot Challenge are helping give many Indiana students an experience with the science skills that are in demand in today’s job market. Couple that with the leadership, work ethic, and life skills that 4-H has always taught, and 4-H continues to be life-changing for those who participate. Indiana took part in a national pilot program of Teens Teaching Youth AgriScience and Biotechnology. Four Indiana teens in 4-H went through the initial training and then helped train 47 other youth from more than 10 Indiana counties. Those 4-H youth went back to their counties and led biotechnology programs for upper-elementary and younger middle-school students, many of whom have never taken part in 4-H. The 4-H National Youth Science Day Eco-Bot Challenge generated a lot of excitement among our 4-H Robotics Clubs, which received a dramatic boost over the past two years from the generous Lilly Endowment gift to the Indiana 4-H Foundation. During the Eco-Bot Challenge, youth had a chance to enhance their engineering skills by learning to think like a robotics engineer, assembling their own robots and control surfaces to manage an environmental clean-up. Youth then tested the interaction between the Eco-Bot’s design and various control surface configurations to determine the most effective way to clean up a simulated toxic spill. In just one month Purdue Extension staff in 30 counties facilitated the Eco-Bot experiment with 2,576 youth, 54 percent of whom were new to 4-H. In addition, 4-H volunteers did the experiment with 13,531 youth, 37 percent new to 4-H. These numbers show the success of the Indiana 4-H Youth Development Program. The Indiana 4-H Foundation is proud to help fund great programs like these and so many more that make 4-H as relevant today as when it first began. We couldn’t accomplish any of this without our generous donors and sponsors. We thank you for supporting 4-H youth through the Indiana 4-H Foundation, and for being part of a program that is changing lives of young people every day. Together we can continue to create new and exciting opportunities for young people to learn and grow through 4-H. With many thanks, Christy Denault Indiana 4-H Foundation Board President, 2012 Indiana 4-H Foundation, Inc. | Agricultural Administration Bldg, Rm 101 | 615 W. We are supporting more programs and giving more scholarships than at any other time in our history,” said Board President Christy Denault. Four years ago the Foundation’s assets totaled $250,000. The Foundation credits this tremendous progress to your continued generosity and support during difficult economic times. Sonny Beck, President of Beck’s Hybrids, gave the keynote presentation. He spoke about the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit he gained at a young age because of 4-H. He shared a story of a “chicken picker” he built as one of his first electrical projects in 4-H. The chicken picker was designed to pull the feathers off a chicken, a job he didn’t like doing. “I figured there had to be a better way,” Sonny explained, “so I built one.” State 4-H Program Leader, explained how these programs are part of the bigger picture of 4-H’s three national mission mandates of citizenship, healthy living, and science. Donors were busy using household items to extract DNA from strawberries, checking out the JunkDrawer Robotics curriculum, and exercising as part of the 4-H Healthy Living 60 Challenge. They also heard Junior Leaders talk about their experience in launching a weekend food backpack program for children who receive free and reduced lunch. “This was a great opportunity for our donors to hear from today’s 4-H youth, and give them some hands-on experience with the kinds of programs they are supporting,” said Shelly Bingle-Coffman, Executive Director of the Indiana 4-H Foundation. “We can’t thank them enough for the generous support that makes these programs possible and makes a positive impact on the lives of thousands of young people all across the state.” His experience with 4-H continues to contribute to his company’s leadership and hiring philosophies. “We look for a positive attitude and work ethic when hiring employees. I have seen that 4-H can instill these qualities and a determination to succeed in young people at a time that is very important in the life of a young person.” Purdue Extension educators and Indiana 4-H youth members were on hand to demonstrate some of the newest programs Indiana 4-H Foundation secured funding for in 2011. Last summer, Paulette LeCountDowden made a very generous commitment to endow the Fashion Revue/Sewing Accomplishment Scholarship for Indiana 4-H youth. Paulette LeCount-Dowden’s dedication to the Indiana 4-H Fashion Revue has been on display. Paulette has been a facilitator and commentator since 1973. When Paulette was approached to pick her brain on potential donors who might be willing and able to contribute the $25,000 necessary to permanently fund the annual Fashion Revue and Sewing accomplishment scholarship, she left the meeting thinking she was the most logical person to take that step to secure the future of the scholarship. In January 2013, June Ladd generously created a $50,000 endowment to create the Richard Eugene Ladd 4-H scholarship to honor her father and support 4-H members and alumni from Grant County, Indiana. June is a 10-year 4-H member from Grant County. She currently resides in Powell, Ohio, but said that Indiana will always be her home. June was a tomboy on the farm following her dad around and helping him out with the chores for the day. “He made me laugh, feel safe and feel hopeful. He was my idol,” said June, “I wanted to leave him a legacy of being remembered forever.” Richard Eugene L add was a hard work ing man who neve r c om p l ai n e d. Thank you for helping build up the next generation of 4-H volunteers and being the catalyst for positive change that fuels the Revolution of Responsibility,” Andrew said. We cannot thank you, our generous supporters, enough for giving to 4-H Resource Development at Purdue University and the Indiana 4-H Foundation. Donations to both 4-H Resource Development and the Indiana 4-H Foundation are used to support Indiana 4-H programs. To give to 4-H Resource Development through Purdue, please include “4-H Gift Account #014862” with your gift to Purdue University to ensure it is restricted to 4-H. The Indiana 4-H Foundation is a 501(c)3 public charity, a separate entity from Purdue University. For more than fifty years, the Indiana 4-H Foundation has supported Indiana 4-H programs. What began as a way to give rural youth new agricultural skills, today has grown into a global organization that teaches kids life skills. 4-H is dedicated to positive youth development and helping youth step up to the challenges in a complex and changing world. 4-H is dedicated to helping cultivate the next generation of leaders and tackling the nation’s top challenges such as the shortage of skilled professionals, maintaining our global competiveness, encouraging civic involvement, and becoming a healthier society. M o s t E f f e c t i v e Yo u t h O r g a n i z at i o n According to an in-depth, longitudinal study conducted by the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development, 4-H youth are three times more likely to actively contribute to their communities and have higher educational achievement. W h a t D o e s 4 - H O f f e r Y o u t h T o d ay ? explores such relevant and cutting-edge topics as climate change, water quality and usage, alternative energy, robotics, scientific and technology literacy and sustainable agriculture. 4-H Science is a holistic approach that includes encouraging healthy eating habits, physical fitness, the capacity to recognize and direct emotions and the ability to develop and maintain positive social interactions and relationships. 4-H Healthy Living concentrates on community action, leadership and personal development, and communication and expressive arts. Through Citizenship programs 4-H youth develop concrete skills to become capable, confident and contributing citizens. 4-H Citizenship The life skills that 4-H kids learn are as diverse as the kids themselves.
