Dear Parent/Carer
Beginning Controlled Assessment in Food Technology– Year 10
As your son/daughter may have told you, we have now begun the very important
Controlled Assessment piece of work for Food Technology. It is a big project that
accounts for 60% of the final GCSE grade. It comprises of various sections that will be
completed during Year 11.
At present, the student are working on the introductory and research sections to enable
them to suggest and make possible food dishes to suit their target audience. We have
completed our first practical on Monday 9th May and they did well. They will be cooking
again on the days as listed below.
Out-of-school activities - How can I support my child?




Students should be encouraged to look for new recipes – in books, magazines,
food television programmes etc.
Pupils can help with the shopping, looking at the range of foods available.
Try out new recipes – and of course help with the cleaning up afterwards!
Collect free literature on the topics we are studying. This could be from
newspapers, news reports, supermarkets, the internet etc….
The success of this course will be determined by their own commitment and
organization of their ingredients. Your support, in providing ingredients during Year 10
has been fabulous and enabled the students to get a great experience of cooking.
Please can I ask that this continues and where possible, you assist them in buying
ingredients and prompting them to be prepared for the practical sessions?
If there are issues with providing ingredients and you receive financial help from
elsewhere, we are able to help - please contact me at school if you need further advice.
Target grade (3LP): _________________
The project work requires each pupil to cook for at least 20 hours over the Controlled
Assessment; therefore, they must cook at least 6 or 7 initial ideas which can be used
to help to decide on their final and best idea. Further investigative work happens
later on in Year 11. All practical work MUST be completed in school with my
presence.
Below are the upcoming dates when pupils can trial possible ideas to meet their
design brief. Please can they bring the recipe, ingredients and carry home containers
in for each session?
Dates for cooking:
Recipe trial 1 – Monday 9th May (completed)
Recipe trial 2 – Monday 13th June
Recipe trial 3 – Monday 27th June
Recipe trial 4 – Monday 4th July
I hope this has been helpful. If you have any questions please contact me at school
or via email at [email protected].
Yours sincerely
Mrs R K Katabalwa
