Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We thank you for joining us to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was a wonderful celebration we had
with the Archdiocese of Seattle and within our parish at Sacred Heart’s Church. We thank the core team who worked
very hard in organizing this celebration. We thank you for your participation in this celebration. We also had a
prayerful celebration for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at each parish. We thank the liturgical ministers
from each parish for assisting us to have a prayerful celebration within our Faith Community. It was a joyful in hope
and expectation to see you at the Eucharistic celebration to honor our Lady. We have entered the Advent Season and
have many retreats for different ethnic groups within our regional parishes. Many people come to the retreat and take
their time to meditate upon the Words of God, just as Mary heard the Words of God and reflected upon them. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available at various times to make it easier for us to receive it. You can make an appointment with a priest at a time when
you can come to receive this sacrament. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated before daily Masses throughout the week, on
Saturday, at a group retreat, and different events throughout the Advent Season. You are also invited to join with the CCD program for
their Reconciliation on December 17th at St. Ann’s Church. We celebrated with the CCD program at St. John of the Woods’ Church
last Sunday December 7th. You are cordially invited to join us to also celebrate this sacrament and join us for communal services and
for different celebrations happening in all the parishes within our Deanery. We thank the parents for taking their children weekly to
practice for the Christmas program and it is a big commitment on their part. It will be a wonderful Christmas Program this year because
you are committed to join us to make it happen.
We thank those who have made the commitment to the Sacrificial Giving by filling in a card and returning it to us. I will work with the
Financial Council to support the Pastoral Council on their Vision and Priority for the coming year’s budget according to your commitment to support us. There are many projects that need your support and having a facility that sufficiently caters for different ministries
and activities is important (a place where we can feel at home with each other). We thank you for being a good Stewardship of your
treasures and it is hard, but you are sacrificing what you can do to share with the parish on what you have. We are publishing a form (in
an easier format) for you to fill up to share with your parish on your time and talent (in what you can do to assist). The form is available
at the back of the Church and is in the parish office and we will be passing them out, so you can fill in the area that you can assist with
your time and talent to assist your parish. When you turn in this form to the parish office, we will contact you and work with you on
what you can help us with. Please volunteer your time on what you can do and share your gift of your time and talent with your parish.
Father Laga is away for his mission to the Samoa community in Alaska this weekend. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts.
We congratulate all those couples that are getting married this weekend. May you continue to enjoy the vocation of family life and may
you continue to find happiness in the Sacrament of Matrimony. We congratulate many couples that are celebrating their Wedding Anniversary. May you continue to find joy and happiness in this vocation in your daily life! Our Faith Community deeply appreciates you
for your vocation.
We had a prayerful time in celebrating Thanksgiving week; we thanked God for His entire blessings. We thank God for the End of the
Year with Peace and Joy for the family that we have. There are so many blessings that we received throughout the year. The Parish
asks you to be generous with your blessing toward the end of the year to assist your parish. We are planning to have many different
projects and these projects need to be done, but we do not have sufficient financial support to do them, so they are still on the waiting
list. We have a long project Wish List that you can assist us with for the End of the Year Giving. Please pray carefully on what you
can give to assist your Faith Community. We are doing a very good job with reaching out to care for the poor among us and reaching
out to care for the sick (i.e. those that are homebound and in nursing homes). We have a giving tree and you are very generous with
them and we are able to give many gifts to them each year.
We thank the parish leadership from each parish, and we invite them and their spouse to join us for a Thanksgiving Mass at St. John of
the Woods’ Church. Following this Mass, we invite them to join us in the parish hall for social and fellowship. This is a wonderful
event for the leadership to gather and to better know each other. When we have a chance to know each other, we are than able to
understand the challenges of each parish, so we can support each other better. We also have the chance to prepare Christmas during the
Advent Season. I thank them on your behalf and when you do have the opportunity, please let them know how much you appreciate
them for their ministry and for assisting our parish with their time and talent. We will have this for our parish staff next Friday, as you
know, we have very dedicated Priests, Deacon, Sisters, Missionary of the Words, and Lay
Staff, who enjoy serving us throughout the year. Without their help and support to
assist me, I am unable to provide a quality and good service to you and fulfill the
parish mission statement. We had a good long-range plan for each parish in place
and we have the results from the ME25 survey (Gallup) of which we have shared

There are many traditions and devotions associated with the Advent Season. With some planning on our part these can become
opportunities of preparation for the coming of our Savior on
Christmas day. Incorporating a few Advent traditions in our
daily lives will enhance the anticipation. The Advent Calendar
is an old German tradition that comes in a wide variety of forms
and styles. The calendars usually have a door or pocket that is
opened each day to reveal a scripture reading or little pieces of
chocolate. Early examples were chalk lines on the wall to count
the days to Christmas. The Advent calendar that is typical today
appeared about 1908. The Jesse Tree is referenced in Isaiah 11:1
in which Jesus is referred to as a shoot coming from the stump of
Jesse, the father of David. The tree itself represents Christ’s ancestry or family tree. Symbolic ornaments are hung from the
branches for each day of Advent. The Mary Candle is usually a
white candle with Marian symbols depicted on it. On the feast of
the Immaculate Conception (December 8), a blue veil is placed
over the candle. The candle calls to mind that Mary accepted
selflessly the role as Mother of God. Marian songs and devotions
are said in veneration of Mary. The Nativity Scene has been
credited to St Francis of Assisi. In 1223, he formed a live Nativity Scene for the Midnight Mass in Greccio, Italy. In modern
times, most households have ceramic or wooden crèches. It is
customary to bless the Nativity Scene before setting it up. A
prayerful formula can be found on line at the USCCB website or
in “Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers.”

We deeply appreciate you for returning your commitment card to support our parishes with your financial support. We thank
you for responding to the parish and supporting her mission. We thank the Stewardship Committee for assisting us in promoting it for this year. If you have not returned a card as of yet, please prayerfully consider how God would have you support the
ministries at your parish.
Every other month packets of envelopes are sent to our parishioners to be used for financial contributions. Use of these envelopes assists all of us in the following ways:
The Finance Council is better able to establish budgets for our parish.
A record of the families in our faith community is maintained and updated through the mailing of the envelope packets.
A record of giving is accessible when children are registered for sacramental programs and/or tuition assistance.
An accurate record of the total members of our faith community can be maintained; this information is used by the archdiocese in establishing our goal for Annual Appeal.
Sharing the Good News from our Regional Survey!

the results are in. We are sharing with you how good our soil is at Regional Parishes of Tacoma in ongoing weekly bulletins for producing the “fruits of the Spirit” here in our parish community.

Mission Statement: We, parishioners of St Ann Parish, are a Catholic faith community in the south end of Tacoma who
proclaim the Gospels and embrace our many cultures and the gifts we share. We come together as one faith community to
celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We are grateful to those who built this place of worship with faith, sacrifice and
sanctified it with their many years of devotion. We remain focused on our Roman Catholic traditions and promote an
environment of hope, where all can grow into the likeness of Christ.

ayudar a nuestra parroquia.
