Let’s Play for Change
The new IKEA Good Cause campaign, Let’s Play for
Change, will specifically focus on children’s right to
play and develop, highlighting the benefits of play for
all children. Though the topic is new, the mechanics are
familiar. For every children’s book and toy sold during
the campaign period, the IKEA Foundation will make
a donation of $1 to projects in some of the poorest
communities in the world, supporting children’s
development and learning, equal participation, sports,
and of course – play.

Why is play important?
We know that play is learning for life. It fuels our
development. It makes us more creative, stronger and
more active. It teaches us how to work together and
care about each other. It sparks curiosity. Play makes
the world bigger. For children and grown-ups. So for
us, it makes sense to see how we can find ways to
do more of it. It helps to think of play not as toys and
games (although those definitely don’t hurt!), but as
a state of mind. A way of finding the fun in everything
you do – especially those normal, everyday activities
that are such a big part of our lives at home.
»We know that the world wants and needs more
play. In our research we’ve seen that 50 % of all
adults want to find their inner child.«
»Only 6 % of parents interviewed said they had no
concerns about their child.«
»Safety concerns continue to directly affect
children’s play. Anxiety about allowing children to
play out with their friends has increased.«
Say Yes to Play.

Play is a basic need
Many people are not aware that play is a basic need,
and that every child has a right to it under the UN
conventions on the Rights of the Child. The IKEA
Foundation has partnered with some of the most
prominent NGOs on this topic: Handicap International,
Room to Read, Save the Children, Special Olympics,
UNICEF, and War Child. The partner programs funded
by the campaign will focus on creating safe spaces for
vulnerable children to play and develop.

The IKEA Foundation
The IKEA Foundation (Stichting IKEA Foundation) is
the philanthropic arm of INGKA Foundation, the owner
of the IKEA Group of companies. We aim to improve
opportunities for children and youth in some of the
world’s poorest communities by funding holistic,
long-term programs that can create substantial,
lasting change.
The IKEA Foundation works with strong strategic
partners applying innovative approaches to achieve
large-scale results in four fundamental areas of a
child’s life: a place to call home; a healthy start in life;
a quality education; and a sustainable family income,
while helping these communities fight and cope with
climate change.

War Child
War Child works toward a world in which no child’s
life is torn apart by war. Armed conflict is a reality
for millions of children today. War Child is committed
to supporting these children to overcome their
experiences, and have a real chance at a better future.
We work in 14 war-torn countries with the people and
institutions that play an important role in children’s
lives such as parents, teachers, community groups
and governments. This approach gives children the
confidence and opportunity to build a brighter future
for themselves, their families and their communities.
For the Let’s Play for Change campaign War Child will
provide children in Jordan and Lebanon, who have been
affected by the Syrian conflict, a safe environment to
play, learn and develop.

Save the Children
Save the Children believes every child deserves a
future. Around the world, we work every day to give
children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn
and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, and
children are most vulnerable, we are always among
the first to respond and the last to leave. We ensure
children’s unique needs are met and their voices are
heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of children,
including those hardest to reach. We do whatever it
takes for children – every day and in times of crisis –
transforming their lives and the future we share.
For the Let’s Play for Change campaign Save the
Children will prevent unsafe migration of children by
promoting protection, education and play for children
on the move.

Room to Read
Founded on the belief that World Change Starts with
Educated Children®, Room to Read’s innovative model
focuses on systemic transformation within schools in
low-income countries during two time periods which
are most critical in a child’s schooling: primary school
for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’
education. Room to Read works in collaboration with local
communities, partner organizations and governments
to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among
primary school children, and to ensure girls can complete
secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate
key life decisions. Room to Read aims to invest in the
futures of at least 15 million children by 2020.
Room to Read will transform the lives of children
through a quality education that includes teacher training,
learning materials, and developing in children both literacy
skills and reading habits.

Kids designing for kids – for every
child’s right to play and develop
For the second year in a row we invited children to create this year’s
limited edition collection SAGOSKATT. Children from around the world
have participated by drawing their own imaginary creature, with the
chance of getting our help turning it into a real soft toy.
In total over 52,000 drawings were part of the drawing competition.
Out of all these wonderful drawings, a jury had the hard task of
settling on 10 winners aged from 5 to 9 years.
Among the 10 winners we find a warm and happy soft toy sun, a
red “wannabe-scary” monster, a green “frog-pig-monkey” with three
legs, and lots more:
Bodil Fritjofsson, product developer Children’s IKEA, comments
on the 10 final drawings: “There are so many creators out there.
The world will not lack potential future artists and designers, some
of the drawings are real pieces of art. The event creates opportunities
for children to be creative and get to draw their dream soft toy
and that opens up their fantasy, which really shows in the art.”
This year, the winners come from:
•Thailand
•Indonesia
•Spain
•Hong Kong
•Czech Republic
•Egypt
•Finland
•France
•Turkey
•Canada

The children that took part in the drawing competition did not
only share their dreams and imagination. At the same time
they contributed to every child’s right to play and develop. The
SAGOSKATT collection, as well as all Children’s IKEA toys and
books, are contributing to this year’s IKEA Let’s Play for Change
campaign that supports children’s rights to play and develop.
Let’s Play for Change, highlights the benefits of play for all
children. For every children’s book and toy sold during the
campaign period, the IKEA Foundation will make a donation of
$1 to projects in some of the poorest communities in the world,
supporting children’s development and learning, equal

Bacteria that feeds on sugar and
carbohydrates on our teeth.
A dinosaur.
The drawing is a combination
between horse and dinosaur, I
would call it “horsaurus”.
It is a dog, with spots.
It’s a frog with the nose of a pig
and the tail of a monkey.
Apatosaurus.
2. What’s the name of your
soft toy?
Täpy.
3. What did you think of when
you drew the soft toy?
I named my drawing “Arel”.
3. What did you think of when
you drew the soft toy?
I don’t want my soft toy to
disappear, I hope every kid would
remember my soft toy.

2. What’s the name of your

At first, I wanted to name it ‘naked
monster’ but dad misheard it as
‘nugget’ which was what we had
before the drawing competition.
3. What did you think of when
you drew the soft toy?
I thought of bacteria on our teeth.
I think they look like this with
these body parts including belly
button and nipples. They smile
ear to ear to show their healthy
teeth after eating all ours.
2. What’s the name of your
soft toy?
When I drew it, I thought of a
friendly, kind and good dinosaur.

4 minutes to draw Täpy.
3. What did you think of when
you drew the soft toy?
It’s beautiful and funny, it’s pretty.
