PRESENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MARCH 1-15, 2011 877-464-2695 alumni.nd.edu/travel/ The Safari Experience CAPE TOWN South Africa Sheltered at the foot of Table Mountain, South Africa’s Mother City is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Centuries-old Cape Dutch houses, storied landmarks and enchanting gardens dot the cityscape. Among the city’s countless highlights, the colorful Victoria & Alfred Waterfront welcomes visitors with inviting boutiques and cafés set amid workaday harbor life. To the south, the Atlantic seaboard gives way to a spectacular coastline, powdery beaches, seaside villages and an array of exotic wildlife within easy reach of the city. In the not-so-distant past, a safari was synonymous with hunters stalking herds of big game that roamed the African plains. Today, most hunters are armed with cameras instead of guns. Their trophies? Images of Africa’s incomparable wildlife. Each day unfolds with discoveries of nature’s grandeur on the wild continent. Awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee as your expert driver prepares his vehicle for your early morning game drive. Set off in pursuit of exotic animals and birds in their natural habitat and see the drama of their day-to-day struggle for survival. Cape Town ROBBEN ISLAND South Africa P ROGRAM H IGHLIGHTS •Groups are limited to 1436 travelers to maximize your travel experience. •Enjoy a specially designed itinerary that showcases the breadth of the culture, landscape and wildlife in South Africa and Zambia. •Explore Cape Town, South Africa’s Mother City, which offers a tantalizing mix of city life and natural wonders. •See powerful Victoria Falls. •Walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela with visits to Robben Island and Soweto. •Observe exotic wildlife in its natural habitat during a three-night safari at a private game reserve. S outhern Africa teems with cultural, biological and geological diversity. Scenic Cape Town, poised between mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, was founded in 1652 by the Dutch, and the city still charms visitors today. Johannesburg, the sprawling metropolis that grew out of a 19thcentury gold-rush camp, is always abuzz with excitement. Feel the sense of community that unites Soweto. In the lowveld, a safari showcases South Africa’s wealth of natural beauty and exotic wildlife. Travel north to Livingstone, Zambia, to experience the power of Victoria Falls, known by the indigenous people as The Smoke that Thunders. UNESCO Robben Island and the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas in South Africa and Victoria Falls in Zambia are UNESCO World Heritage sites featured in this comprehensive program. These sites are distinguished due to universal scenic, historic, artistic or scientific value. Robben Island symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit. Within sight of Cape Town, but effectively a world away, the island was the site of the prison that held Nelson Mandela and other political dissidents. Today, former prisoners lead visitors on insightful tours. Despite inhumane conditions, prisoners organized political debates, educational programs and sporting events. They also became the international focus of the fight against apartheid. CAPE PENINSULA South Africa In 1580, Sir Frances Drake, the great English navigator, described the Cape of Good Hope as the “fairest cape … in the whole circumference of the earth.” The Cape, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet, is blessed with a dramatic beauty. Table Mountain National Park, which stretches from Cape Town to Cape Point, is part of the Cape Floral Region, which is considered to have the most diverse range of plant life in the world. In addition, visitors are likely to see plenty of wildlife, especially chacma baboons. More elusive are zebra, eland and bontebok. At Cape Point, ascend one of the world’s highest sea cliffs by funicular to admire stunning panoramic coastal views. A stop in Simonstown is a must. Here, stroll along the boardwalk at Boulders Beach to see more than 2,000 protected African penguins, whose colony dates only from the early 1980s. Above left: Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Table Mountain, Cape Town; far left: Outdoor dining, Thornybush; left: Sunbird perched on a protea Return to the lodge for a hearty English breakfast and share your morning encounters with fellow travelers. After lunch, there is time to take a dip in the pool or treat yourself to a massage at the spa. Tea is served before your afternoon game drive. As the sun completes its sojourn across the sky, return to the lodge for a relaxing evening. After a dinner of delicious Continental and local cuisine, gather around the fireplace to trade tales and tally your Big Five sightings. By day’s end, you’ll have collected many photographs and thrilling memories of your very own safari. THE BIG FIVE Nineteenth-century big-game hunters coined the phrase The Big Five. The term refers to the most dangerous animals to track on foot and, therefore, are the most prized trophies. They are the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, Cape buffalo and leopard. These magnificent creatures are still the most desired animals to stalk while on safari, but nowadays with a zoom lens mounted on a digital camera! RHINOCEROS LION CAPE BUFFALO ELEPHANT LEOPARD Victoria Falls Cape of Good Hope Until the 19th century, the Zambezi River’s great cascade was called Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the smoke that thunders,” by the region’s Kololo tribe. “Discovered” on November 16, 1855, by Dr. David Livingstone and renamed for England’s queen, spectacular Victoria Falls is the planet’s largest curtain of water—spanning more than a mile—as it crashes some 328 feet into the raging Batoka Gorge below. Twice the height of Niagara Falls, mighty Victoria Falls casts a veil of spray that can be seen up to 50 miles away! African penguin LIVINGSTONE Zambia Named after the famous missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, this former colonial town is the perfect base from which to admire the Zambezi River and its thundering waterfalls. Its National Museum features a collection of memorabilia from Livingstone’s explorations as well as Tonga crafts and African maps dating back to 1690. JOHANNESBURG South Africa Local peoples first inhabited the region that we now know as Johannesburg. European settlers migrated to the area in the mid-1800s to prospect for gold. In 1886, the discovery of a huge lode was discovered and sent gold panners and diggers into a frenzy! Within a few months of the discovery, the population exploded. Today, Joburg is the country’s financial center. If tranquil Cape Town is the country’s oldest and most genteel city, Johannesburg is its rambunctious little brother. Its energy is palpable, and as in any large city, many people come here to enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle. By contrast, the suburb of Westcliff and the peaceful environs of your hotel are distinguished by mansions with beautiful gardens. YOUR LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS Victoria Falls, The Smoke that Thunders GAME RESERVE If you’ve ever imagined seeing a pride of lions lazing in the sun, a lone cheetah scouting for prey or a herd of impala gracefully bounding across grassland, then embarking on a safari at Thornybush Private Game Reserve will be a dream come true. Located near world-renowned Kruger National Park, the reserve offers incredible wildlife encounters in the heart of the Valley of SOWETO South Africa Soweto, an abbreviation for South Western Townships, is no longer just a collection of shantytowns built to house black mine workers away from the center of Johannesburg. It is a thriving community that is proud of its role in ending the oppression of apartheid. Renowned for its population of African elephants, Chobe’s tuskers number around 120,000 and are possibly the largest surviving and continuous population of the species. The second-largest national park in Botswana, Chobe encompasses four distinct ecosystems and is home to one of the most diverse concentrations of game and birds found on the African continent. Top to bottom: Livingstone: Zambezi River Cruise 2.5-hour excursion Settle into the relaxed resort atmosphere with a sunset cruise aboard a triple-deck catamaran. Watch for buffalo, giraffes and, perhaps, an elusive white rhino stopping for a drink along the verdant banks of the Zambezi River. Charles F.
