Some keep the Sabbath going to
church
Some keep the Sabbath going to church;
I keep it staying at home
With a bobolink for a chorister,
And an orchard for a dome.
Some keep the Sabbath in surplice;
I just wear my wings,
And instead of tolling the bell for church,
Our little sexton sings.
God preaches, a noted clergyman,
And the sermon is never long;
So instead of getting to heaven at last,
I ’m going all along!
Paraphrase stanza 1
Some keep the Sabbath
going to church;
Some people go to
church on Sundays
I keep it staying at
home
I honor the God at home
With a bobolink for a
chorister,
With a bird for the choir
And an orchard for a
dome.
And trees for a roof
Paraphrase stanza 2
Some keep the
Sabbath in
surplice;
Some honor God in
traditional clothing
I just wear my
wings,
I come as I am
And instead of tolling
the bell for church,
Not called by the
bells to service
Our little sexton
sings.
Instead, a small bird
sings
Paraphrase stanza 3
God preaches, a
noted clergyman,
And the sermon is
never long;
So instead of getting
to heaven at last,
I ’m going all along!
God speaks to be, a
important Christian
figure
And he never speaks
too long
So instead of going
to heaven when I die
I have been going
everyday
