Road Safety - please help us
We have had worrying reports of children
near and in the roads behaving in a way
that could easily have resulted in a nasty
accident. This has mainly occurred at the
Woolbrook Road site but please could all
parents talk to their children about road safety and ensure the
children know they MUST cross the roads at the crossing
patrol outside Woolbrook Road.

Chicken Pox and Scarlet Fever
There have been some cases of scarlet fever and chickenpox reported in the area - please can you
advise the school if your child has either of these conditions. Thank you.
Scarlet Fever is a common childhood bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, or
group A Streptococcus (GAS). The symptoms of scarlet fever include sore throat, headache, fever,
nausea and vomiting. After 12 to 48 hours the characteristic red, pinhead rash develops, typically
first appearing on the chest and stomach, then rapidly spreading to other parts of the body, and
giving the skin a sandpaper-like texture. Patients typically have flushed cheeks and pallor around
the mouth. This may be accompanied by a ‘strawberry tongue’. Although scarlet fever is usually a
mild illness, patients can develop complications.
Children and adults with suspected scarlet fever should contact their GP for a consultation and if
provided with appropriate antibiotic treatment for a diagnosis of scarlet fever should be excluded
from nursery / school / work for 24 hours after the commencement of the treatment.
Chickenpox is usually a mild and common childhood illness that most children catch at some point.
It causes a rash of red, itchy spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters that crust over to form scabs.
To prevent spreading the infection, children should stay away from the nursery or school until all
spots have crusted over.

6T Make Great Teachers!
After completing their SATs last week,
6T have been busy passing their
learning on to other children on the
Woolbrook site. They planned and
prepared either an English or maths
lesson to teach Years 3, 4 and 5. They
created learning activities,
differentiated tasks and presentations
to support their teaching. All the
children that were taught agreed that
6T have done a fantastic job!
Waitrose tokens
This is the last week that we are one of the
beneficiaries of the green token scheme at Waitrose
for May. Please help us by putting your tokens in
our box, and thanks to everyone who already has!

Y6 Foolish Fun Run (1)
Last Friday, Year 6 trudged over to
Margaret’s Meadow to complete a
half an hour race to raise money for
their Year 6 Treat Day. The children
all dressed up in brilliant outfits,
ranging from the incredibly bright to
incredibly wacky (sometimes both).
A fantastic time was had by both
children and staff alike as we learnt
how difficult a 5 legged race could be
and also how running for half an
hour is much more difficult than you
think!

Y6 Foolish Fun Run (2)
(cont’d) Year 6 were dressed
in a range of weird and
wonderful outfits and had to
walk/run/5/6/7/8 legged/
crawl/dribble a ball or run
round a course in the Byes as
many times as they could in
half an hour.
They were a truly magnificent sight and we were blessed with wonderful sunshine as well as
some great support from many parents, friends, supporters and even several friendly dogs!!

1/2S Museum Trip
Last week 1/2S went to Sidmouth Museum to go on a dinosaur
hunt and research a little about the history within Sidmouth.
1/2S (2) Stone Age Food
Also last week 1/2S were looking at the Stone Age period, so the
class tried a range of different foods that Stone Age people might
have eaten. They thought about how much Stone Age people
would have needed to eat and if they were more or less healthy
than we are today.

3TB’s Sporty Week
3TB had a lovely time playing golf recently. They
learnt to chip and putt and some were so
successful I think we are lucky all the school
windows are still intact! I’m sure we have a few
budding professional golfers at Sidmouth Primary!
3TB also learnt how to play tag-rugby. The
children learnt the skills of passing backwards,
team strategies, scoring as well as being graceful
in defeat!
It was good fun and a great learning
experience.
Go Mrs Mitchell!

Quad Kids
Last week Sidmouth Primary School held an open qualifier for the
Quadkids athletics team. We had 54 children trying out for the squad
and from that the top 8 from each group, Year 5/6 boys, Year 5/6
girls, Year 3/4 boys, Year 3/4 girls went through.
On Monday these 32 children went to Sidmouth College to represent
Sidmouth Primary School and as you can see from the results below
we did extremely well and will now go on to represent the Sidmouth
cluster of schools at the East Devon Finals, in both the 3/4 and 5/6
Quadkids.
I am also pleased to say that the standard was so high, you can
compare their results to other schools and we have 6 boys in 5/6
that achieved the Gold Standard which would put them in the top
4% of the country.
We also had 1 5/6 female silver and 3 bronze, one 5/6 male silver
and 2 male 3/4 bronze. Which shows we have a very high standard
in athletics here at Sidmouth!

Y5/6 Football Finals
Yesterday we took two Year 5/6
teams to the East Devon Premier
Sports Football Finals in Exmouth.
Out teams represented themselves
excellently winning loads of games
and out of the 8 schools present
they finished 2nd & 4th which is a
great result, losing out to a very
strong Honiton team, who did not
concede a goal in the whole
tournament.
