Page 11 Tupper Lake Free Press Wednesday, February 11, 2015 NYC big winners in women’s hockey at Empire State Games By Rich Rosentreter Free Press Sports Correspondent A big weekend of Empire State Games women’s hockey ended at the Tupper Lake Civic Center with New York City taking home the gold medal and dominating much of the competition. The championship rounds took place on Sunday and began with New York City defeating Adirondack by a 8-2 score. Then Central New York faced off against Western New York, with the west clawing out a 2-1 victory, setting the stage for a New York City versus Western New York championship game. New York City blasted Western New York with a 7-3 victory to take the gold medal. Western New York went home with the silver medal and the bronze medal was taken by Central New York. On Saturday, the team from NYC set the tone for their gold-medal run with several big wins. They beat Adirondack 8-0, Western New York twice with 6-1 and 7-1 scores and then Central New York, 2-1. A team from Hudson Valley also took part in the hockey competition. The Adirondack team did have a victory on Saturday with a 7-1 victory over Hudson Valley. In its other games, the team tied Central New York 1-1, lost to NYC 8-0 and Western New York 4-3. Standout performers for the Tupper Lake girls were Tess Klossner, who took first place in the girls’ 300-meter dash, and Madi Fortier, who took sixth in the 55-meter dash. Fortier also finished in the top ten in the 300-meter dash. e k a L on E at Schools from across the North Country took part in the competition, including teams from Saranac, Ogdensburg, Indian River, NorwoodNorfolk, Plattsburgh, Malone, Chittenango, Clinton, Canton, Peru, Beekmantown, Gouverneur, Massena, Westport, West Canada Valley, Seton Catholic and Potsdam. The relay four were DJ Shaheen, Mitch Harriman, Matthew Varden and Gage Beaudette. In the girls, 55-meter dash, Madi Fortier finished in sixth place with a time of 7.8. In the boys 600-meter run, DJ Shaheen finished in 11th place with a time of 1:37.9; Matthew Varden finished in 20th place with a time of 1:47.8; Reese Hoag finished 24th with a time of 1:50.6; Gage Beaudette finished in 27th with a time of 1:51.6; and Mitch Harriman finished 28th with a time of 1:52.4. In the boys’ 300-meter dash, Justine Walsh finished 38th with a time of 45.1. In the girls’ 300-meter dash, Tess Klossner topped the field and finished first with a time of 44.4; Madi Fortier finished 10th with a time of 48.5; and Jocelyn Clement finished 29th with a time of 56.3. In the boys’ shot put, Jordan Young placed 33rd Lake Clear native named to Dean’s List at Ithaca College Gretchen Hohmeyer, a English major in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College, was named to dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester. with a distance of 25-04.0. In the girls’ shot put, Breanna Trombley placed ninth with a distance of 25-00.50 and Emily Godin placed 32nd with a distance of 19-07.50. There is another invitational meet scheduled for the track team at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at St. Lawrence University.
