Email [email protected] with your suggestions today. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources Sept 2013 Additional Trainer Resources Worksafe BC – This organization is located in British Columbia, Canada. They have many useful videos and other publications that may be helpful with your Outreach Training classes. Washington Department of Labor and Industries – This organization is in the State of Washington and has a website of downloadable video and other information for safety and health training. Oregon OSHA – another state safety and health agency that provides many videos that are downloadable for training purposes. Many are also available on YouTube. NIOSH Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluations (FACE) - Each day, between 12 to 13 U.S. workers die as a result of a traumatic injury on the job. Investigations conducted through the FACE program allow the identification of factors that contribute to these fatal injuries. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) - The CSB conducts root cause investigations of chemical accidents at fixed industrial facilities. Root causes are usually deficiencies in safety management systems, but can be any factor that would have prevented the accident if that factor had not occurred. Other accident causes often involve equipment failures, human errors, unforeseen chemical reactions or other hazards. Videos are available online or you may request CSB DVD compilations. Nov 2013 Additional Trainer Resources Caterpillar – Caterpillar is well known as a leader in safety for heavy construction equipment. They have been producing safety videos for a long time, in fact they were doing it when safety movies came on 16mm film. There are many videos on their site. Power Tool Institute (PTI) – PTI has established itself as the preeminent organization for building global understanding of power tools and for maintaining high standards of safety in the industry. This organization has developed quite a few safety videos on this subject. Electrical Safety Foundation – The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home, school, and workplace. ESFI engages in public education campaigns throughout the year to prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities. NIOSH Videos - NIOSH produces videos that are available for streaming, download, or you can order DVD’s . The Electronic Library of Construction Safety and Health (ELCOSH) - ELCOSH is a site that’s maintained by the Center for Construction Research and Training. There is quite a bit of information available including hazard information, PowerPoints and videos . Jan 2014 Additional Trainer Resources YouTube Downloader – This program offers users the ability to download YouTube videos and save them as MP4 files. For PC’s and Mac’s. There is also a premium version with enhanced functionality. RealPlayer – Another downloader for videos. This one also offers users the option to trim parts of a video from the complete product. The downloads may be stored in the cloud. Also available with a premium version. In my experience it works better with PC’s. Drive to Survive – a site that offers many resources for those of us who teach drivers how to operate their vehicles (autos and trucks) safely. EHS Freeware – Many options for free safety, health and environmental training materials and advice. Miller Fall Protection – Everything you may want to know about Miller Fall Protection Products. The site includes downloadable videos and links to Miller on YouTube. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources March 2014 Additional Trainer Resources Napo Videos - These films are produced as computer graphics & feature characters in the world of work, faced with safety issues. The main character, Napo, and his partners express themselves in wordless language. Culturally, they are "neutral" and therefore anyone can identify with them, whatever their language, country of origin or culture. Safety Awakenings - An open-source workplace safety website providing links to over 20k free international safety resources! Every link is reviewed and selected by their staff. There are PowerPoints, safety apps , video clips and safety humor, all free and open for use. Rockford Systems Machine Guarding videos – There are ten videos on this site that show several different kinds of machine guarding options for production machinery. There are useful for training or for the safety professional who may be looking for a way to provide effective protection for machine operators. They are also available on YouTube. NIOSH Ergonomic Guidelines for Manual Material Handling – This is a booklet published by NIOSH and Cal/ OSHA that offers assistance in improving the handling of materials by employees. It includes assement tools, analysis methods and improvement options. Cal/OSHA Pocket Guide for the Construction Industry – Published on the Cal/OSHA website, this guide details the requirements under Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations. The guide is intended to be used as a reference for workers, employers, supervisors, job stewards, safety personnel and others. It is also available in Spanish. May 2014 Additional Trainer Resources ANSI Standards on-line – The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has the ANSI IBR Portal, an online tool for free, read-only access to voluntary consensus standards that have been incorporated by reference (IBR) into federal laws and regulations. Any Video Converter – This site has download programs for Window and Mac that will convert all videos & YouTube to MP4, MP3, etc. for various media players, as well as clip, crop, rotate or merge to edit videos. Ladder Inspection and Repair - Batavia Services, Inc., has over 70 trained technicians that service ladders & ladder rack equipment over the entire U.S. Their program adheres to the standards required by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and to the ladder manufacturers' own recommendations for ladder repair. Remote App for iPhone - Last month in the Trainer Tip, I discussed using an iPad for showing presentations. At that time, I thought the presenter would need to be close to the iPad to advance the slides. I’ve since been shown that there’s an app for the iPhone that allows remote control of the Keynote program on the iPad via a Bluetooth connection. NIOSH Compressed Gas Self-Inspection Checklist – this checklist covers regulations issued by OSHA under the General Industry standard 29 CFR 1910.101. It applies to the handling, storage, and use of compressed gases in cylinders or portable tanks. The checklist is designed for use in schools, but could be easily adapted to other businesses. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources July 2014 Additional Trainer Resources OSHA e-Tools - e-Tools are interactive, web-based training tools on OSHA topics. They are highly illustrated and utilize graphical menus. Some also use expert system modules, which enable the user to answer questions, and receive reliable advice on how OSHA regulations apply to their work site. Some e-Tools are available as downloadable files. OSHA Accident Investigations – This searchable site has many detailed investigations conducted by OSHA. The material is useful to create case studies for Outreach classes. OSHA Most Frequently Cited Standards – Located in the OSHA Training and Reference Materials Library, the MFC PowerPoint presentations show the top ten in both General Industry, Maritime and Construction, and the top five in each subpart for both industries. OSHA Focus Four Spanish language training materials – Created by a contributor to the Susan Harwood grant program, this site has PowerPoint presentations for the required Focus Four segments of the Construction Outreach program. Respiratory Protection Videos – Topics include fit testing, medical evaluations, respiratory protection in general industry, respirator types, voluntary use of respirators, respiratory protection in construction, training requirements, respiratory protection for healthcare workers, the differences between respirators and surgical masks, donning & doffing, counterfeit respirators, maintenance and care, and the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (1910.134). Many are offered in both English and Spanish. September 2014 Additional Trainer Resources OSHA QuickTakes - Twice a month, a new issue of QuickTakes goes out to nearly 72,000 subscribers, including stakeholders from across industry, academia, community organizations and advocacy groups, as well as many managers and workers. QuickTakes is a great way to find out what OSHA is doing. (And it is free!) Dumb Ways to Die – I really shouldn’t tell you about this video because the song will stick in your head for days But it might be a good way to begin a safety meeting with the right perspective, of course. (Thanks to Callie Sattler) NIOSH Noise Meter – NIOSH has a page with audible sounds reflecting noise at various decibel levels. This may be good as training examples when discussing hearing protection. San Disk wireless flash drive – An alternative to internal or cloud based storage when using an iPad for training, this wireless flash drive allows you to wirelessly stream media without the need for an Internet connection (Thanks to Jacob Maxfield—the most techie safety guy) Tire cages and exploding truck tires – ever wonder why tire cages are so important when working on truck tires? This video will show examples of tires exploding in cages and one time with no cage. It’s kind of 1970’s vintage, but a good demonstration if you’re teaching automotive techs. Download it from YouTube with the YTD program that we’ve discussed in previous issues. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources November 2014 Additional Trainer Resources Compliance Directive for the Cranes and Derricks in Construction Standard Directive - OSHA Instruction: CPL 02-01-057, a directive for OSHA compliance officers enforcing requirements of the Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard provides OSHA compliance personnel performing inspections on a construction worksite. Web Resource for Residential Fall Protection – A description or purpose of each fall protection device is listed, as well as the stage of construction where the device could be used, pictures of the device in use, installation instructions, and information about the manufacturer, vendors, and cost. The site was developed by Dr. Vicki Kaskutas from Washington University School of Medicine, with support from the Center for Construction Research and Training through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cooperative agreement. National Work Zone Safety Information Clearing House – This site is dedicated to providing the transportation construction industry and the general public with comprehensive information to improve motorist, worker and pedestrian safety in roadway work zones. Free safety materials for safety professionals – This website is designed as a safety library of the most often used tools by safety professionals. The tools are free, public type publications. If you re-use these, please remember that since they are ‘public,’ do not sell them, or insert commercials into them. There are no accidents – Public service announcements – this site includes provocative television ads that depict “accidents” and talk about how they could have been prevented. The ads are designed to get people talking about the importance of workplace safety and to help change the mindset that says workplace injuries and illnesses are inevitable and acceptable. The only acceptable number of workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities is zero. February 2015 Additional Trainer Resources OSHA Recordkeeping Requirements- Newly promulgated and effective as of January 1, 2015. This webpage has quite a bit of informational and supporting documentation to help employers comply with the new rule. NIOSH Noise and Hearing Loss Prevention - Occupational hearing loss is one of the most common workrelated illnesses in the United States. Approximately 22 million U.S. workers exposed to hazardous noise levels at work, and an additional 9 million exposed to ototoxic chemicals. An estimated $242 million is spent annually on worker’s compensation for hearing loss disability. Cal-OSHA Training Requirements - A list of the instruction and training requirements contained in the Construction Safety Orders (Subchapter 4) and the General Industry Safety Orders (Subchapter 7) of Title 8, Division 1, Chapter 4 (with several references contained in Chapter 3.2) of the California Code of Regulations. Also included are references to both Competent Person and Qualified Person. Safety and Health Management Systems E-Tool - The best Safety and Health Programs involve every level of the organization, instilling a safety culture that reduces accidents for workers and improves the bottom line for managers. When Safety and Health are part of the organization and a way of life, everyone wins. OSHA Prevention Videos (V-Tools) – Construction Hazards – 15 animated videos that show how quickly workers can be injured or killed on the job and are intended to assist those in the industry to identify, reduce, and eliminate construction-related hazards. Most of the videos are 2 to 4 minutes long, presented in clear, easily accessible vocabulary, and show common construction worksite activities. Spanish-language Workers' Rights video - This video encourages employees throughout the country to remember their workplace rights to raise safety concerns in the workplace. It is part of OSHA's continuing effort to strengthen outreach to the Spanish-speaking public. Updated shipyard industry digest - An updated digest of Shipyard Industry Standards (PDF*) is now available from OSHA. This new publication contains safety and health standards specific to the industry. Don’t forget that there are also digests for Construction and General Industry. Naval Safety Center – The US Navy has an excellent website with safety and health presentations for both service-related and personal exposures. They also provide the outstanding “Photo of the Week”. Evacu-Trak Evacuation Chairs – This site was brought to my attention while teaching the Egress and Emergency Action Plan lesson in an OSHA 511. These chairs are valuable for evacuating those who are not able to walk stairs in an emergency. There’s a video provided, as well. June 2015 Additional Trainer Resources Injury and Illness Prevention Program Resources – The Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) is a written workplace safety program as required by Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations (T8CCR) section 3203. Employers must develop and implement an effective IIPP that improves the safety and health in your workplace and reduces costs by good management and employee involvement. This site provides many helpful resources to create or enhance your IIPP as required in CA Seton Canada eye safety video – Seton Canada is a supplier of safety equipment. They have an eye safety video, aimed at managers, that’s humorous but gets the point across. Safety Resources Blog – Consequences of an Incident - A good safety meeting opener – this video goes over all aspects of an incident, including legal issues, how the incident affects the business and other workers, etc. Have an Exit Strategy – Provided by the Texas Department of Insurance, this site offers advice on how to plan for exiting a building during a fire. There are links to videos as well as a computer simulation of the fire development and problems with the exit design. NIOSH Simple Solutions: Ergonomics for Construction Workers – Some of the most common injuries in construction are the result of job demands that push the human body beyond its natural limits. Workers who must often lift, stoop, kneel, twist, grip, stretch, reach overhead, or work in other awkward positions to do a job are at risk of developing a work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD). This booklet contains solutions for preventing WMSD’s in construction workers. August 2015 Additional Trainer Resources Safety Rap Video- Provided by the Virginia Dominion Power, this cute, short video offers a cool and stylish view of safety gear and practices. Official Weatherford RADAR Rap video- Created to promote the Weatherford Drilling Group RADAR safety practice for their drilling rigs in Australia. RADAR stands for Recognize, Approach, Discuss, Agree, Report. Another video with very catchy tune and lyrics. All-terrain Vehicle Fact Sheet- OSHA’s new agriculture safety fact sheet on all-terrain vehicles identifies serious hazards and steps farmers can take to protect farm workers from injuries and incidents. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources August 2015 Additional Trainer Resources Continued Contaminated water in eyewash stations- Eyewash stations are critical emergency safety equipment intended to lessen the severity of eye injuries from workplace exposure to irritants or biological agents. This document provides information about the organisms that can grow in stagnant water, how to prevent them from growing, and how to recognize infection signs and symptoms. OSHA at 40 video- This might be an interesting video to start off your 2 Hour Intro to OSHA segment of any Outreach course. December 2015 Addition Trainer Resources Safety Isn’t Temporary- Workplace Safety Training for Temporary Workers. The guide includes downloadable, printable manuals for employees and employers, as well as a complete lesson plan designed to introduce temporary workers to basic information on workplace safety responsibilities, workers’ rights and potential job site hazards. There is a nice PowerPoint included. To download, you’ll have to register but it’s free and the materials are quite good. Electrical Safety- A video made by Terry Weston that describes and shows many of the common electrical hazards that may arise in an industrial workplace. To assist employers and employees, Cal/OSHA Consultation Service recognizes the value of providing information through the Internet and other formats. This free ladder safety training is a tool for the proper selection, care and safe use of all ladders, including stepladders, single and extension ladders, articulated ladders, and mobile ladders. Provided by the American Ladder Institute, this training outlines safe ladder practices in all applications, such as construction/painting, building and custodial services, warehousing, power, manufacturing, chemical and petrochemical, oil and gas, and at home. OSHA Fall Protection Resources- The National Safety Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction is May 2-6, 2016. OSHA has created a page of Fall Protection Resources drawn from many sources to encourage employers to provide training to their workers regarding fall hazards. July 2016 Additional Trainer Resources New OSHA poster- available for free from OSHA, informs workers of their rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Pipeline Association for Public Awareness - Promotes open communication and cooperation with local organizations to enhance public safety, improve emergency preparedness, protect the environment and prevent damage to property and facilities. The Scaffolding, Shoring & Forming Institute - A trade association of leading manufacturers of scaffolding, suspended scaffolding, shoring, forming, planks, platforms and related components. November 2016 Trainer Resources OSHA Video on Filing Complaints- This is a short one-minute video in both English and Spanish to assist workers when they feel a need to complain to OSHA. Power Tools Training Video - Ever wonder if your workers need to be trained on using simple power tools? Watch this video that obviously reinforces the need for training. Arc Flash Safety- Arc flash is a huge hazard for those qualified to work around energized electrical equipment. This video is a good entry into proper training to avoid death or serious injury. The Cleasby Grizzly Fall Protection Cart- See how this safety cart is designed to help prevent the risk of employee falls on the job. It has a fall arrest capacity of three workers, and also offers a fall restraint system. The Latchways Personal Rescue Device - The Latchways Personal Rescue Device™ (PRD)™ is worn with a 3M™ Elavation™ Harness. In the event of a fall, activation is achieved by simply pulling the release cord, allowing for self-rescue in a controlled descent. Foundations for Safety Leadership - Created by the CPWR in cooperation with OSHA, this program is designed for training leadership personnel in the construction industry. It can serve as a great addition to the electives in the OSHA 30-hour Construction Outreach course, or as a stand-alone training session. OSHA Outreach Trainer Resources March 2017 Trainer Resources Respirator Fit Testing in the 1930’s – Respirator Fit Testing in the 1930’s. It’s amazing to watch how workers, primarily in coal mines were tested to ensure that a respirator would fit correctly. Incident Investigation - OSHA strongly encourages employers to investigate all incidents in which a worker was hurt, as well as close calls (sometimes called “near misses”), in which a worker might have been hurt if the circumstances had been slightly different. Preventing Backover Injuries - A backover incident occurs when a backing vehicle strikes a worker who is standing, walking, or kneeling behind the vehicle.
