Walk with Blake Blake is a 12 year old boy who loves going to Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside Day Camp in the summer and respite weekends throughout the year. He has been involved with Easter Seals for the past 4 years. Blake has been given the opportunity to develop social skills, form friendships and gain independence. Blake’s mom Margie states, “I wish I had found this program sooner, it’s the best thing we ever found.” Blake’s favorite activities at Camp Sunnyside are fishing, riding the paddle boats and pontoon and swimming. Blake’s smile and twinkling blue eyes are known by all at Easter Seals. Blake also has used the Autism Resource Lending Library at the Assistive Technology Center. Walk With Meredith Independence is what 24 year old Meredith is working toward and during the past 6 years with Easter Seals Service she has made incredible strides. She is involved in both the Case Management and the Supported Community Living programs. Meredith learned to take the bus until she got her driver’s license. She began taking culinary classes and was learning to be more independent in the community. Her proudest accomplishment is her volunteer job at the Bob & Billie Ray Child Development Center with the 3-year olds. She is also an active volunteer at any Easter Seals event, speaking, at it as well as helping out where needed. She has become much more active, social and independent than when we first met her. Walk With Josh Josh was born with cerebral palsy and uses leg braces and a crutch to get around, but that has never slowed him down. Josh has been involved with the Easter Seals Achieving Independent Methods (AIM) program for 8 years. The AIM program has assisted Josh with finding a job that he has held for over 5 years; and has assisted him in being more independent living on his own. He has become more active socially as well as being involved in legislative advocacy and volunteering at Easter Seals events to share his story and help at the event. Josh is a very engaging man with a great spirit and sense of humor who is always willing to share how Easter Seals has made a difference in his life. Walk With Lisa Lisa is passionate about advocating for people with disabilities. She enjoys public speaking, politics and has been active at Easter Seals Annual Legislative Reception. Lisa is employed but finding her dream office job is a goal Lisa has, with the hopes of being able to support herself independently. She is always working to further her vocational skills and the Easter Seals AIM program supports her in this endeavor. Walk with Angie Angie understands that life can change in an instant. One minute you are driving home from a friend’s house, the next thing you know, you are in a collision with a semi and end up under an 18 wheeler. Two months and one day later, she returned home from the hospital in a wheelchair. She was a quadriplegic. Angie was able to connect with Easter Seals Rural Solutions Program and was able to get help making her home more accessible. A couple of the accommodations made to her home included having a ramp and automatic doors installed on her house. Angie was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Iowa in 2009 where her focus was on making the state of Iowa a more physically accessible place for people in wheelchairs. Angie continues to utilize the Rural Solutions program as her needs have changed over the years. It has continued to allow her the independence and freedom to enjoy life to the fullest. Walk with Joy That says it all, doesn’t it? Joy is a captivating 8 year old looking forward to celebrating her 9th birthday in this summer. Perhaps she will be at Camp Sunnyside when she does celebrate. Joy loves going to camp, especially the arts and crafts activities and the swimming. Joy’s mom Jennifer loves knowing that her daughter gets to experience summer camp and everything that goes along with it just like any other child. If it weren’t for Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside, Joy would not be able to have the summer camp experience. Walk with Jasper Being outdoors, fishing, four wheeling and enjoying Iowa’s summers are a few of Jasper’s favorite things. His inviting and adventurous spirit drives him and he is the first to try something new. He also is the first to help others. Jasper was introduced to Easter Seals in 2004 after an accident which left Jasper paralyzed and in a wheelchair. He has utilized Easter Seals Equipment Loan Program. Jasper continues to be an active, independent, working adult. His favorite food is fettuccine alfredo and has a passion for cooking pasta. Join Jasper as he helps to raise awareness and have fun while sharing the opportunities Easter Seals Iowa offers to everyone. Who knows, you may be walking with America’s next Top Chef as Jasper’s dream is to have his own catering business. THANK YOUS!!!!
