Directory of Memorials, Monuments and Statues for Veterans Distributed by Texas Veterans Commission P.O. Box l2277 Austin, Texas 787ll-2277 JOHN E. MCKELVEY CHAIRMAN AUBREY L. BULLARD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ARTURO T. BENAVIDES VICE CHAIRMAN DOUGLAS K. BROWN DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR JACK W. FLYNT MEMBER CHARLES A BUERSCHINGER DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR ROBERT J. LYONS MEMBER SAMUEL BIER SECRETARY TEXAS VETERANS COMMISSION BOX l2277, CAPITOL STATION AUSTIN, TEXAS 787ll 5l2/475-4l85 In l983, the Texas Veterans Commission commenced making inquiries to determine if there existed any directory showing the location of memorials, markers, statues, etc., honoring our veterans and their deeds and services. We found that no one had ever cataloged these veterans’ memorials on a Statewide basis. We felt this should be done, and we embarked on the project in March l984. After many months of correspondence and numerous telephone conversations, we finally obtained reports from all 254 Texas counties. The information obtained is contained in this directory, and we feel that it will be of interest to you and a very large number of people in our State. It came as a surprise to learn that forty-five (45) of the Texas counties have no memorials or monuments to our veterans. However, we are pleased to note that in several of these counties, efforts have commenced to establish or erect various types of edifices to honor the veterans and their service to our Nation and State. Because of the magnitude of this project, it is likely that some memorials have not been reported to us. Please rest assured that omissions from the listings are not intentional in any way by our Commission or by the Local citizens who assisted in gathering the information. We have given credit to the county residents and others who assisted in gathering the information needed, and we greatly appreciate their efforts. Due to the costs involved, the supply of these directories will be rather limited. Anyone who so desires, however, may feel free to reproduce any or all of this publication for Local use and distribution. We hope that if this material is reproduced, you will give due credit to the Texas Veterans Commission, and to the many citizens who assisted in gathering the information contained in this publication. AUBREY L. BULLARD Executive Director Celebrating One Hundred and Fifty Years-l836-l986 Memorial Day At Gettysburg, at San Juan Hill, In Flanders Fields now all is still, But men still drill and march away Like you who made Memorial Day. In Normandy, and on Bataan, At Inchon, Khe Sanh, and in Iran, Selflessly the need you met. And now we know we must not forget. Those who fought and those who fell, To hear the bell of freedom knell. We crouch beside your graves today; These wreaths of vernal buds to lay. And to you who died for freedom’s sake, A pledge to carryon we make: The torch that you so bravely bore Shall be our beacon evermore. We pray that by its guiding light We’ll find our course and hold it right. We hope it may throughout the years Bring an end to blood and tears. For we’re a nation proud and free, And sometimes it is hard to see Where friendship for our cause abides And where a foe of freedom hides. You have found peace while we still weep And wail o’er charges we must keep. There’ll be no peace until we find A way that’s just for all mankind. -William J.
