A Chapel Oaks Resident
Message from the President & ceo
Michael E. McRae
Dear Friends,
It is hard for me to believe as I sit
down to write my article for this
edition of the SPIRIT, that we are
almost finished with 2014! Where
did the time go? Since taking
over the reins of CEO this past
April, I have been blessed with
the opportunity each day to see
the impact St. Ann’s Community
makes on the lives of our Most
Important People On Earth. I have
held a variety of positions over the
last 25 years of my career and have
seen care delivered across various
settings. Based on that experience,
I feel so strongly that St. Ann’s is
one of Rochester’s best community
assets.
I have traveled and visited
countless organizations, large and
small, new and old and would
put St. Ann’s up against any one
of them. As you can probably tell
I love to share with anyone who
will listen, all the great work that
goes on within our community.
Just the other day, on my way
home I stopped at my favorite
supermarket to pick up a gallon of
milk. Still wearing my ID Badge,
the person in front of me in line
realized where I worked and said
“I just have to tell you my mother
was at St. Ann’s, my uncle was at
St. Ann’s and my neighbor just
had rehab for a new knee at St.
Ann’s! We are so thankful that our
family and friends have had such
2 l The Spirit • St. Ann’s Community
wonderful care.” I of course took
the opportunity to thank her and
went on to share some of the nontraditional programs that we now
offer like our HeartMatters Cardiac
Rehab and Advanced Wound Care.
The best part of this story is when
it was my turn to check out, the
young person at the register looked
up at me and not wanting to be
left out said, “I did my community
service at St. Ann’s Community at
Cherry Ridge and my grandmother
lived there too. I know exactly
what she was talking about – it was
great!” It was an overwhelmingly
positive interaction.
The good work done every day
across St. Ann’s Community is
executed by a high performing,
talented, dedicated and most
importantly, caring group of staff
and volunteers. One way we
honor our staff is through our
Award of Excellence Program.
Employees chosen have been
called out for this special
recognition based on their
dedication and commitment to St. Ann’s and its Mission. Some of our recent winners are:
Molly Nutting Human Resources
Hired: June 2004
Over the past 10
years Molly has
dedicated her time
and energy to the
employees as the Human Resources
Coordinator. Molly also chairs
the Wellness Team and the Fun
Committee bringing many new
opportunities to the staff.
Debbie Vetuskey Central Supply
Hired: October 1988
Debbie has been
working in Central
Supply for 26 years.
Her efforts as a
CSR Technician and her bright
smile have a major impact on the
residents, patients and employees
lives each and every day.
Nate Browning Facilities Services
Hired: January 1996
As the Paint &
Carpentry Leader,
Nate thinks outside of
the box to tackle any
problem. For over 18 years Nate has
made custom modifications for not
only the residents but for the staff.
Barb Robertson SACC Nursing
Hired: August 2008
Barb has had many
jobs within St Ann’s
over the past 6
years; everything
from Staff RN to Nurse Manager
and now Healthcare Services
“I have traveled and visited countless organizations,
large and small, new and old and would put
St. Ann’s up against any one of them.”
Coordinator at St Ann’s Care
Center. Barb goes above and
beyond to make sure everything
is running smoothly for our
employees, therefore ensuring
consistent care to the residents.
Over the last few months the
Leadership Team, Board of
Directors, staff and various
stakeholders have been engaged
in updating our Strategic
Framework. At the center
of this living and breathing
document is the foundation of
all of our good work - our staff
and volunteers. The framework
calls out five key imperatives:
Drive Employee Engagement,
Provide Outstanding Customer
Experience, Diversify Senior
Care and Services, Expanded
Partnerships /Relationships and
Achieve a Margin that Advances
our Mission. This framework
looks to address the changing
healthcare landscape while
ensuring high quality care
for those we currently serve
and those we will serve in the
future. I hope to see you soon at one of
our upcoming holiday parties.
Beginning December 1st and
lasting throughout the month,
there will be tree trimmings,
events with local school
children, concerts and more
across all our Communities.
It’s such a special time of
year and one I always look
forward to.
I hope that your
holidays are filled with
the blessings of family,
friends and good health.
Peace!
St. Ann’s Community
Earns 5 Star Rating
St. Ann’s Home has earned a Five
Star Rating from the Centers for
Medicaid and Medicare Services
(CMS). The Five Star Rating is
the highest rating possible for
skilled nursing facilities and puts
St. Ann’s in the top tier of nursing
homes nationwide. “To have
achieved this rating for a 470
bed skilled nursing facility takes
continued focus and commitment
to quality, each and every day,”
stated Michael E. McRae,
President & CEO St. Ann’s
Community. “I could not be more
proud of our outstanding team of
professionals.”
This good news follows two other
significant quality achievements;
St. Ann’s Care Center on the
Cherry Ridge campus also earned
a Five Star Rating earlier this year
and Assisted Living, received
a deficiency free survey this
summer. St. Ann’s Community
continues to demonstrate our
ability to provide quality care
to The Most Important People on
Earth.

Living Life
to the Fullest
Every day is a gift! The upcoming season (Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Year) reminds us that living life to the fullest
is to recognize each day as a gift, even in the midst of all the
activities, challenges and transitions that life brings.
Each year the weeks of mid-Autumn and early Winter can
be a time to reflect on the gifts we experience in our lives.
Thanksgiving is a time when people gather with family and
friends in thanksgiving to their Creator for gifts too numerous to
count. Christmas is a time when we celebrate and give thanks
to God for the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. Christmas is also
a period to think of others, rather than selfishly ponder our
self and our own needs. Christmas is a season for giving and
receiving gifts. The New Year challenges us to hope and pray for
World Peace.
A number of our family members and friends find these months
filled with challenging transitions. Transitions in our lives allow
us to transform ourselves for the better. The New Year presents
a broad spectrum of changes, for some family members, it’s a
couple’s engagement, planning a wedding, taking a new job
or moving out of New York State, while for others it might be
purchasing a new home, starting a new business career or it may
be an upcoming retirement.
Each of these transitions could be joyful or stressful in living life
to the fullest. Some of these changes can cause our imagination
and dreams to soar as high as the heavens with good thoughts
and delightful outcomes.
May we continue to pray for one another as we journey by faith
and “live life to the fullest.”
Peace, Love and Prayers!

New Wellness Center
at Chapel Oaks
On September 29th, Chapel
Oaks was excited to open its new
Wellness Center. The Center
offers a 20’ x 30’ heated pool with
easy access steps, an underwater
treadmill, an ADA approved
power lift and open lanes for lap
swimming. Residents at Chapel
Oaks are raving about having the
new pool in their community and
pleased they do not need to leave
their home to achieve personal
wellness.
Another feature of the new
Wellness Center is an expanded
fitness area with locker rooms.
The fitness area is equipped with
11 new pieces of senior friendly
training equipment. Residents are
bragging about the new equipment
saying the machines are user
friendly and easy to operate.
Another bonus that residents
noticed was that the recumbent
bicycle works every part of your
body, which eliminates the use of
multiple machines during their
workout.
Chapel Oaks offers five exercise
classes per week taught by welltrained instructors. The classes
include; arthritis stretching class,
toning, yoga, tai chi and aquatic
exercise. In addition, a Wellness
Coordinator is available to answer
any questions residents might have
about exercise and fitness.
At Chapel Oaks, the goal is to
incorporate the seven dimensions
of wellness including physical,
emotional, intellectual, social,
spiritual, environmental and
occupational, into our monthly
program of activities and events.
With the new Wellness Center
open at Chapel Oaks, we can now
incorporate these dimensions of
wellness into our residents’ quality
of life and overall wellbeing.
Visit the on line activity calendar at
www.chapeloaks.net to see how we
incorporate all seven dimensions of
wellness into our monthly events
and activities.

Pete Tierney – A Chapel Oaks Resident
Pete Tierney, Chapel Oaks resident
just turned 101 years old on
October 29th and has been a
lifelong resident of the Rochester
community. Tierney grew up in
the 10th ward on Lake View Park.
He is the oldest living Aquinas
graduate, graduating in 1931.
Pete was on the first football team
that wore the Aquinas jersey and
played half and defensive back.
Pete says, “I was 5 foot 5, 135
pounds. Today I couldn’t qualify to
carry a tray of water cups.”
Tierney admits that Aquinas
did not look the part. Since the
program was just beginning, the
school didn’t even have its own
equipment at the time.
6 l The Spirit • St. Ann’s Community
“That was the days of soft leather
helmets and no face guards,” says
Pete. Tierney was lucky when it
came to equipment though. He
played “sandlot” – an organized
unofficial football little league
among city neighborhoods so
he had his own equipment and
uniform.
After high school, Pete attended
the University of Rochester and
played on their football team for
all 4 years of college. He never
officially stepped on the field but
earned the letter jacket.
After college, Tierney served 41
months in the United States Army
in World War II. He spent 39 of
those months overseas. “I left
for my European Tour and came
home in 1945,” he said. After
returning home, Pete went to
work at Eastman Kodak Company,
which is where he remained until
his retirement in 1975.
Today, you will find Pete having
lunch every Thursday at the
Rochester Yacht Club with his
friends wearing his Aquinas
baseball cap. The staff members at
the club call them the Romeo’s –
Retired Old Men Eating Out.
Pete has become quite the artist
since living at Chapel Oaks. He
creates beautiful birds hand carved
from wood, as seen with Pete in
the photo above.

After lunch, Mike McRae thanked
all volunteers for being such a

‘Dolly’ Cerame who have been on
the board since inception and will
officially be at the helm starting in
January 2015.
“We have a great and compassionate
Angel Board,” comments Jackie,
“While Lil and I will continue to still
serve on the board; it is time for new
angels to spread their wings and lead
us into the future. Sue and Dolly
are just those leaders.” Sue a longtime volunteer and family member
and Dolly who leads many of the
Angel special events are enthusiastic
and compassionate about the Angel
mission. “St. Ann’s has been a big
part of my life, so this is a mission
I feel strongly about.” says Sue. “I
love being able to help support the
residents who might not have the
financial ability to do so.” says Dolly.
We are fortunate to have the strength

A Small Lift for
Home & Heart,
a Huge Lift
for Participants
St. Ann’s Home & Heart adult day
program in Webster had some
much-needed improvements
to be done, yet there simply
wasn’t any budget left. To make
it happen they needed to find
$5,000 in additional funding.
When the Foundation turned
to some of its resident family
members and committed
donors for private support they
were happy to help!
Outdoor space improvements
were made and they’ll be plenty
of enjoying the grill and picnicarea come spring. Thank you to
all who made it possible. And,

Jean Arena
“Our family’s guardian angel,” that’s
the best description for Jean
Arena according to her niece, Pat
Gambacurta.
Jean doesn’t let the distance
between her home in Sarasota,
Florida and her extended family in
Rochester diminish the closeness
of their relationship. Through
telephone calls, letters and
occasional visits the family stays in
close communication.
One of Jean’s sisters, Catherine
Czech, lived at St. Ann’s Care Center
at Cherry Ridge until her death
in October, 2013. Kay, as she was
lovingly referred to by all who knew
her, was kind, generous and loving.
She immediately made friends with
her neighbors, staff and volunteers.
She was thrilled when her niece Pat
came to visit and brought her trusty
accordion with her. Once she started
to play, toes were tapping, hands
were clapping and smiles lit up the
faces of everyone there.
Jean wasn’t able to see her sister as
much as she would have liked, but
it was easier knowing how happy
she was and how well she being
taken care of. “One of her greatest
joys was watching the birds from her
windows. The grove of blue spruce
provided the perfect habitat for
Kay Czech and Jean Arena
cardinals, chickadees and many
other species.”
When her sister died, Jean made
a very generous contribution
allowing us to enhance this
outdoor area, so others could
experience the same joy that Kay
did. “It’s a small way to say thank
you to those who helped to make
Kay’s final days happy ones,”
explained Jean.

Corporate Partnership of St. Ann’s has never been stronger!
This year, St. Ann’s Foundation has raised a record $48,250 from
its partners - walloping last year’s total by $12,000.
Our corporate partners, just like many of our supporters, truly
see the value of their donation. Because of their support the
Foundation has been able to provide scholarships to St. Ann’s
staff members furthering their education, offer residents trips to
the Buffalo Bills training camp and even provided the funds so
our seniors can get their hair cut.
We couldn’t be prouder to partner with such outstanding
companies that are all locally based and we can’t say THANK
YOU enough.

Talking with your family about
what movie to see or where to
go on vacation is pretty easy for
most of us. Sitting down and
talking with your grown children
about your Will is another story.
And if you are the children, you
may find it very uncomfortable
to ask your parents what they
are going to do with their money
when they pass away. The
questions below are the second
of a two-part series that focus on
family communication from the
perspective of the children.
Q: Why do I need to know
my parents estate plans?
Ask an
Attorney
Nicole Marro
Attorney at Law
Bond, Schoeneck & King PLCC
Because your parents’ assets will
be transferred (either to you or
someone else) once they die. You
may be the person responsible
for managing the transfer so
you should know what the plan
is and who to contact. Without
a discussion with your parents,
family disputes may arise and your
relationships with your siblings
may suffer permanently.
Q: How do I talk
with my parents about
their estate plans?
One way to bring up the topic is
to mention that you are working
on your own estate plan and
that the quality of that plan
depends on knowing as much
as possible about your future
financial position. In addition,
you can explain that as a result
of working on your own plan,
you now understand how
much work is involved in the
administration of an estate and
are wondering what they have
done to minimize the work and
have they consulted with a trusts
and estates attorney.
Q. What are the most
important topics we
should talk about?
You should talk with your parents
about whether they have these
three essential documents: 1)
a will; 2) a durable power of
attorney for financial matters;
and 3) a health care proxy and
living will. It would also be wise
to ask them if they have a current
list of assets and where to find
important documents.

questions, please contact

Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2014
St. Ann’s Community participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 20th at
Mendon Ponds Park. Our St. Ann’s Team had over 110 participants helping to exceed our fundraising goal.
This was all possible because of the hard work and big hearts of the St. Ann’s Community team,
friends and families. Thank you!
