Read and ReflectWho would you say is the most powerful person in the entire world? Would it be Mr. Incredible
because he saved his family and the world? Maybe it's the Beast form Beauty and the Beast
because he fought for the woman he loved. There is someone more powerful and strong and
that person is God. We have learned through many Sunday School lessons in the past about
God’s power and strength. But today we will see how God used his power in unusual ways in
order to save the Israelite people from slavery. God called Moses and his brother Aaron to go
to Pharaoh and ask for the release of the Israelite slaves. However, Pharaoh would not let
Gods people go. The only thing that did happen was that Pharaoh got even angrier and was
more cruel towards the Israelite people. Pharaoh did not know God so he did not have the
proper respect for Him like God’s people do. That is why Pharaoh would not let the Israelites
go. God then told Moses and Aaron to go to Pharaoh and throw Aaron’s staff down on the
ground in front of Pharaoh and it would turn into a snake. So Pharaoh, seeing this, called his
magicians and they did the same thing. However, Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.
Pharaoh still would not listen. Now God was going to send plagues on the Egyptian people.
Things were going to get really rough now. These are the plagues that God sent upon the
Egyptian people.
1. Blood - All of Egypt's water was turned into blood. The fish die, the river smells horrible and
the people are without water. Pharaoh does not let the people go.
2. Frogs - Frogs come up out of the water and cover the land everywhere. Like the blood the
magicians do the same trick and Pharaoh does not let the people go.
3. Gnats - All of the dust of Egypt is turned into gnats. The magicians cannot duplicate this
plague and they say, "It is the hand of God." Pharaoh still will not let the people go.
4. Flies - Swarms of flies cover the land. Pharaoh promises to let the people go but then
refuses.
5. Livestock - All Egyptian livestock dies, but none of Israel's even gets sick. Pharaoh still
does not let the people go.
6. Boils - Horrible boils break out on everyone in Egypt. Even the magicians get boils.
Pharaoh still will not let the people go.
7. Hail - A hail storm kills everything that is outside and destroys every plant. Pharaoh
confesses his sin but then changes his mind and does not let the people go.
8. Locust - They cover the land and they eat everything left after the hail. Everyone tells
Pharaoh to let the Israelites go but Pharaoh's heart is hardened again by God and he does not
let the people go.
9. Darkness - For three days complete darkness covers Egypt. But the Israelites have light
and can see. Pharaoh again promises to let the people go but then changes his mind. He does
not let them go.
10. Death - The firstborn of all the people and cattle of Egypt die. But the Israelites are spared.
Pharaoh and the Egyptians urge Israel to leave quickly. After they are gone Pharaoh changes
his mind and goes after them.
We might wonder how Pharaoh could be so foolish to see God's power and still not obey.
Pharaoh had his mind made up even before the plagues. He did not want to admit that there
was someone greater and more powerful than he was. God is the most powerful person that
has or ever will be.
