THE UPPER LEG-YORKE PENINSULA The upper leg below the copper triangle region has a rich history and story to tell. It covers the first coach crossings of the peninsula to Port Clinton, the early salt works, the stump jump plough controversy between the Smiths of Arthurton and the Dowlings of Ardrossan. The area is crisscrossed with roads and tiny settlements at five road junctions- Dowlingville, Petersville, Winulta, Clinton Centre etc. On the western side of the leg we visit Port Victoria and Balgowan on the coast and Point Pearce where the War Memorial cairn highlights the role played by Aboriginal soldiers in World War II. While Alexander the great was building his empire, a great civilisation based on an advanced cascade irrigation system and Buddhist doctrine was thriving on this island, which chronicled continuously over 2 millennia. It was constantly invaded by India and Colonials, but remarkably could not be conquered entirely until the 19th Century. What made this tiny island so important for those powers? Take a journey through the history of this fascinating country and learn how the history has shaped contemporary Sri Lanka with a rich ethnocultural mix. Nirodha Meegahakumbura The aim of this course is to introduce Roman History to people who have always been interested in it, but feel lost and don’t know where to start. We look at the 3 periods: Rome Under the 7 Kings; Rome Under the Republic and Rome Under the Empire. It examines the role played by key personalities such as Hannibal, Spartacus, Julius Caesar and the emperors as well as the social causes behind the main events. Finally it analyses the overwhelming influence Roman society has had on our own. At the end of the course people will then be in a position to further their knowledge by tackling the Roman writers and the works of modern specialists.
