Stramongate Primary School Year 5 Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2014 Welcome back to the new school year! We have an exciting time planned. Many of our subjects will be linked through our cross curricular theme “The Terrible Tudors” and whenever possible we will try to link subjects. The information on this sheet will give you a brief overview of some of the activities we will be doing this term. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or can offer any help. Reading mornings are Tuesdays and Thursdays - doors will open at 8.40am and you are welcome to come into school to read with your child. PE days are Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Children will need black shorts, a white t-shirt, black pumps for indoor use, black jogging bottom or leggings, a sweatshirt and trainers, all named and kept in a named PE bag. High Borrans Residential. RE/PSHE This term we will be learning about the Christianity. We will look at the Bible and why it is important to Christians. We will learn about ourselves and what makes us the person we are. Computing Children learn which resources on the Internet they can download and how to stop their computer from being harmed. During the term, Year 5 use a free online computer program called ‘Scratch’ to learn about Computer Programming. They learn how to use variables and sequence together a set of commands to begin making games. As part of our Tudor and Space topic children use various searches online to research different aspects of these areas. Then they create multimedia presentations using Powerpoint. Science We study two units this term - Lifecycles and Earth and Beyond. We look at the different stages in a variety of animals lifecycles as well as a plant lifecycle. Children are reminded of the various groups of animals. Earth and Beyond- We focus on the sun, moon and earth and their relative sizes. Children research the other planets in our solar system. As part of the topic we use a rocket launcher from Queen Katherine to investigate a fair test. Additional Activities Each child will be given a user name and password to access Mathletics online. Homework will be set using Mathletics each week.. The children are reminded to log on at least twice a week for a duration of about 15 minutes. Children take part in daily guided reading sessions and are encouraged to take more responsibility for their independent reading. History Tudors Children learn how the Tudor period began and through drama act out ‘The Battle of Bosworth’. Following this they learn about Henry 7th, the Tudor Rose and then Henry 8th. The children are taught about each of his wives, his personality and how he rules Tudor England using a variety of different sources. Music What sort of person was Henry 8th? PE Foundation Subjects Linked to Tudor music. This term children identify instruments used in Tudor music and use these to compose their own small pieces of music, which have a similar style. Orienteering Year 5 are taught to orientate a simple map and use these skills in a familiar and unfamiliar setting when using a variety of maps. Tudor Dance The children create their own short sequence of movements based on a traditional Tudor dance. Art Year 5 look at proportion, scale and colour mixing to produce a variety of portraits culminating in a portrait of Henry 8th. They use a range of media to draw their own dragons linked to Legend writing in Literacy. They use tone and colour washing techniques.
