By design, the ESOL Summer Reading Camp is an exercise in equity-based and
culturally responsive instruction (cont’d):
• Students who do not speak English as their first language often struggle
with independent reading assignments and projects.
• The Camp ensures students will be able to participate meaningfully in the
Summer Reading learning experience by following ESOL best practices.

Real world experiences to build background knowledge
Cooperative learning groups
Interactive oral and text-based literacy practice
Explicit instruction of grammar, vocabulary, research and study skills
Imbedded technology and 21st Century performance practices
• The Camp also supports students’ future academic performance in all
subject areas by improving their overall English Language proficiency.
