Pos Matome Griko
Executive Summary
GRIKO: What is Griko?
Griko is a minority language, spoken in one of the two linguistic islands of Southern Italy,
in the area known as Grecìa Salentina, in Apulia. It is composed by Doric words that prove
its derivation from ancient Greek, as well as from medieval and Modern Greek.
Griko is currently taught in primary and secondary schools of the area. Nevertheless, this
minority language, for several economic and cultural reasons, is disappearing. We believe
that it must be protected and preserved as precious heritage of the common Mediterranean
culture.
The project Pos Matome Griko strives to enhance a new interest for Griko language,
making its teaching and learning easy and interesting through the development of a modern
and innovative teaching methodology, supported by multimedia tools applied to language
teaching.
The project team is composed by high profile international partners, with long experience in
projecting and executing initiatives aiming at preserving and improving the value of EuroMediterranean Cultural Heritage. They are: Agenzia per il Patrimonio Culturale
Euromediterraneo (IT); British Hellenic Educational And Development Association (Gr),
Alpha Publications (Gr); University of Cyprus (CY); Istituto Culture Mediterranee (IT).
With the contribution of all the involved partners and with the Community funding we have
projected an all new educational material, with innovative concept and methodology. The
traditional educational tools as vocabularies, books, language courses for children and
adults, are, in fact, supported by modern ICT applied to education: The website, the elearning platform and the educational software are essential parts of the method and have
been studied and designed to involve and catch the attention of younger people.
Nevertheless, we have not forgotten adults who will have access to a comprehensive and
integrated educational system for learning Griko at all levels.
The availability of modern teaching materials and the development of specific educational
curricula are the main tool of the project to raise awareness on the important cultural and
historical role played by Griko in everyday life and behaviour of the Griko speaking
population. For this reason this language can and must be protected and preserved.

1.
Project Objectives
Our goals and our intentions
Promotion and enhancement of Griko
Promotion and support of linguistic and cultural diversity through the promotion of a
minority language and its cultural and sociological influences in the territories where it
is spoken
Improving the educational resources of all institutions that are interested in the
teaching of Griko
Development of an innovative teaching method, result of a synthesis of tradition and
technology.
Improving the use of ICT in education, increasing interest, motivation and learning of
the target groups (including students).
In fact, the problems which we will try to solve are: the absence of teaching language
Programme for adults, the absence of economic subvention for realizing a curriculum for all
Griko schools, respecting the CEFR knowledge language level.
The existing material lacks a specific methodology, does not cover all the language levels, it
is not attractive. The development of innovative Griko learning material and of a modern
teaching programme will contribute to overcome the above mentioned difficulties.
The target groups of our project are:
-students of primary and secondary schools in Apulia (6-15 years old)
- adults living in Apulia (till 65 years old)
- teachers of Griko language
Moreover, all the schools of the area will be involved: the 9 local schools (Cutrofiano,
Martano, Carpignano, Zollino, Corigliano d’Otranto, Sternatia, Soleto, Melpignano, Calimera,
Martignano, Castrignano dei greci, ), the students and their teachers - for a total amount of
about 54.000 inhabitants.
The main project activities, in which the target groups are involved in, are the pilot lessons
and the seminar. The total number of students that will take part to the pilot lesson will be
200. The total number of adults that will take part to the pilot lessons will be 200. Lesson will
have duration of 48-60 hours for 15-20 people. The total number of teachers that will take
part to the seminar will be 10-15. The principal objective of the seminar will be the
presentation of the curricula and the discussion about the methods for teaching Griko both
for students and for adults. In fact, the Griko teachers will cooperate with the partners’
scientific team for the evaluation of the results and the new methods for teaching and
learning Griko will be tested at the Griko schools. The students will take part to the cultural
events during which they will present their work and cultural activity.

Project Approach
Approach for the development of the curriculum
The curriculum is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
learning, teaching, assessment (we took into account the six levels: A1 – A2 basic user; B1B2 independent user; C1-C2 proficient user). The object was to clarify what type of material
is appropriate for each level. The curriculum will be used by the teachers of Griko and other
institutions in Italy. Our goal is to create a coherent and integrated methodology (notably
through the creation of curricula for both children and adults) in order to increase the number
of schools that teach the language but also the number of people who will attend classes.
Methodology for the development of the educational material
•
Each level will be completed in 160-180 teaching hours. It means that each unit of the
book will have to include didactical material for 10 teaching hours (or for 1 week if it is
easier using this subdivision)
• Texts that must be used: the best would be using original texts;
As far as levels A1-A2 are concerned, we made two different choices:
a. Registered dialogues (there will be the possibility to allege the cd to the materials will
be produced by ALPHA)
b. Original texts, part of which could be insert in more than one unit;
When the partners will not be able to use any one of the two options, the texts created
by the experts will be used, according to the grammar and the communicative situation we
intend to present;
•
•
•
The transcription of the comments on the exercises or the titles of the different part of the
books ( es. Part A: Texts, part B: Grammar ect) we decided to use little icons that partner
APHA will suggest. The meaning of this little icons will be précised in the introduction,
and explained in greek , griko and italian
Revision units: they will be two for each unit, with grammar and vocabulary
summarization, without texts. It means that it there will be 4 summarizing unit for each
book;
The structure of the unit for each of the two book will be the following:
2-3 original text
o List of words with the original form of the word and no other translation or
information ( a list under each text)
o Grammar principle, with no transcription but using list and examples;
o 10 grammatical and vocabulary exercises;
o The activities (elaboration of the oral and written words, comprehension of the
written words) will be based on an inedited text put at the end of the unit. If it will
be difficult finding texts, it will be possible using the texts of units “modifying”
them.

Evaluation strategy
In order to assure the project’s efficiency and evaluation different types of evaluation are
planned during the lifetime of the project. An evaluation committee was established at the
beginning of the project to ensure effective management and internal evaluation. The main
tools for the evaluation of the project include: internal progress reports in a five month basis,
self evaluation questionnaires, and product evaluation forms.
In addition, external evaluation of the project’s outcomes is planned at the beginning of the
second year by an external evaluator, as well as trough the pilot lessons.
Finally, an external evaluation will take place at the end of the project.
Dissemination and exploitation strategy
The major focus of the dissemination strategy is to ensure that the project’s processes and
outcomes are widely disseminated to the appropriate target groups, at appropriate time and
via appropriate methods.
The dissemination and exploitation plan produced at the beginning of the project provide
useful to endorse the sustainability of Pos Matome Griko initiatives such as:
Definition of the essential marketing tools and the elaboration of an effective plan
for disseminating project results.
Planning and scheduling of communication activities to ensure wide visibility and
identification of the project as part of a marketing driven dissemination campaign.
Dissemination activities will be conducted in order to actively engage all Partner
organization
These actions include:
Design of Pos Matome Griko project logo
Realization and implementation of a website and of an e-learning platform (www.egriko.eu)
Production and distribution of promotional and informational material such as:
brochures, flyers, posters, etc.

Partnerships
The Consortium is composed by 5 partners representing Italy, Greece and Cyprus. The
partners have all the necessary skills for the realization of the project.
The lead partner, Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Heritage Agency, has participated in projects
for the enhancement of the Greek language and holds managerial skills for the
administration of the project. People who develop the scientific part of the project have
already taught Griko and have participated in various conferences on the Griko teaching.
British Hellenic College (P2) has participated in several European projects related to
language teaching, mainly the Greek language, in collaboration with the Hellenic Language
School "Alexander the Great." So P2 has acquired experience, knowledge and skills that are
required for the development of curricula and teaching material. P2 has also participated in
activities that concern Griko. We highlight, in particular, the collaboration between schools in
Athens and in Grecìa Salentina, with the aim to emphasize the elements the two regions
have in common.
The collaboration with the University of Cyprus (P4) is very important and can be the basis
for the development of a similar material also for less widely spoken languages. The
teachers who will deal with project have already worked with issues concerning dialects and
with Griko, in particular.
The Working Group of the Institute for the Mediterranean Culture (P5) has skills and
knowledge about the development of teaching material and strives for the dissemination and
preservation of Griko.
Finally, ALPHA Publications (P3) has the technological knowledge for the development of the
website and the electronic products of the project, as it is experienced in the field of elearning.
It is important that the partners have complementary competences which they will use in
order to implement the project.

Plans for the Future
The activities which the partnership will undertake during the next period in order to
accomplish the aims and objectives of the project include the following:
Development of the educational material
The educational material will be based on the curricula already produced. Each
module will be based on texts originating from the history, folklore, and customs of
Apulia. Each educational module will include vocabulary, grammar and word games.
a. Educational book for children
18 modules for the first two levels (A1-A2) which will cover approximately 180
teaching hours
b. Educational book for adults.
18 modules for the intermediate level (B1-B2) which will cover approximately
180 teaching hours
c. Vocabulary (Griko, Italian, Greek)
The introductory units of the two books, the introduction and the speech exercises will
be available in IT, EL and Griko.
Website – forum and e-learning platform
The website will include basic information about the program, the results and the
project activities and it will be the primary mean for disseminating the project. The
website will be continuously updated with news about the teaching of Griko, cultural
events in the region of Puglia, articles and other material. The e-learning platform will
host the on-line courses. The forum of the website will start to operate in order to
create an online community where the members will have the opportunity to
exchange ideas. Finally, the educational material will be available on the e-learning
platform and the end users will have access through login.
Production of the Educational Software
The educational material to be developed will also be available as educational
software. Thus, the end users will have the opportunity and motive to use the new
technologies as a learning tool, following their own rhythm and way of learning. The
educational units of the books will be presented in multimedia didactical software.
The sound, video, animation and graphic will contribute to the interaction between the
user and software, indicating the mistakes or the right answers.
Exploitation of the results
a. Pilot testing of the educational material addressed to pupils and adults
The lessons will be based on the six first units of the book.
200 pupils and 200 adults
Each group: 15- 20 pupils
Duration of each course: 48- 60 hours
b. Seminars addressed to teachers
The main aim of the seminars will be to present the new curriculum and the
educational material and to increase the possibility of using them in their lessons.

Contribution to EU policies
We believe that the project directly addresses the European linguistic diversity policy, as it
is described in the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, as well as in
article 3 of the European Union Treaty, according to which the Union “…shall respect its rich
cultural and linguistic diversity, and shall ensure that Europe's cultural heritage is
safeguarded and enhanced”. The European Union has granted Griko “endangered language”
status, while UNESCO characterise it as “severely endangered”. Our project has exactly the
aim to disseminate Griko and enhance its teaching, so as to contribute to the efforts of
sustaining the culture it embodies.
We also address both the priorities of Life Long Learning, as our project aims not only in the
general promotion of the Griko through websites, social networks, info days etc (awareness
raising), but in the actual development of teaching method, curricula and teaching material
for this language (development and dissemination of language learning material).
