IKE: The Smart City Hub
IKE (Interactive Kiosk Experience) is a communication platform created to help
cities and business improvement districts connect with its citizens and visitors with
information and resources in dynamic new ways. Through a system of vivid, durable
touch-screen displays containing an ever-expanding and seemingly limitless series
of applications, IKE offers three essential features that will benefit any city.
• IKE is a wi-fi enabled, easily updated delivery system for smart city
services, including multi-modal mapping to nearby destinations, all
encouraging an activated and pedestrian-oriented downtown city
center. The system encourages increased utilization of public transit
through real-time display of transit updates, including route schedules,
directions and information for all forms of public transportation – rail,
bus, bike share, etc.
• IKE is a dynamic, two-way communication platform between the city
and the public, allowing the city to provide information and receive
feedback from the community, both at the IKE location and through
integrated social media. IKE reinforces the cities’ brand as a progressive
innovator to citizens and visitors alike. During emergencies, the system
can display critical messages from governmental authorities. In addition
to visual displays, IKE is capable of emitting audible announcements.
• IKE is a self-sustaining system that provides a meaningful recurring
revenue stream to a city and/or business improvement district, and
requires no capital or operational investment from the city.
Smart City Functionality
IKE’s current functionality and content are accessible in English and
Spanish and is ADA compliant. In contrast to other kiosk products,
the interactive and public service communication functionality
of the product is a primary component of the design; instead of
being relegated to a secondary position on a tablet, the large 72”
screen itself is a touchscreen display, which encourages pedestrian
interaction with a series of ever-expanding applications, all available
at the touch of the screen. Current applications include:
• Getting Around
• Eat, Play, Shop, Stay
• What’s Happening
• Question of the Week
• Photo Booth
• Essential City/Emergency Communications
Getting Around
Public transportation is paramount to any smart city,
and IKE provides information and route maps for
multi-modal transportation options including bus, light
rail, bike share and car share services to get in and
around the city efficiently. This functionality will further
enhance any city’s investment in public transit, creating
a powerful platform to implore visitors to consider
alternative means of transport. Data suggest that one
of the biggest factors leading to increased utilization of
public transit is awareness and convenience, and IKE
addresses both challenges through real-time display of
transit updates, including route schedules, directions
and other information to encourage ridership.
Eat, Play, Shop, Stay
Designed specifically for pedestrians, IKE is the wayfinding
system of the future. It encourages people to explore the
city, highlighting nearby cultural attractions, special events
and other points of interest — and then provides turn-byturn directions to get them where they want to go. Custom
mapping programs allow municipalities to categorize
businesses, services and attractions in a proprietary and
locally relevant way, rather than relying upon Google Maps or
other off-the-shelf solutions that already exist on smartphones.
What’s Happening
Downtown is a mecca of activity and IKE provides a look at events
and opportunities to enjoy today, tomorrow and even throughout
the entire month. This is an opportunity for the city to highlight
not only events, but also health awareness months and cultural
celebrations. The digital nature of the displays allows for the city
to change messaging on a daily basis, including dayparting to
reach a different segment of the population throughout the day.
Question of the Week
Municipalities have long searched for a simple
and effective communication platform to engage
residents and visitors quickly. From simple and fun
loving questions about local sports teams to polling
the public about municipal spaces and key issues,
IKE provides an efficient tool for the public to share
opinions with city leadership, and provides results
and readily available analytics.
Photo Booth
This fun analog device has been reinvented, allowing
for pedestrians to pose for customized postcards that
can be taken away quickly on individual mobile devices
and are then integrated with social media, encouraging
further online engagement with the city.
Essential City/Emergency Communications
IKE allows for the immediate deployment of
emergency messages and critical updates from
governmental authorities, creating a highly visible
broadcast medium to deliver information to the public.
Planned & Potential Functionality
IKE was developed with a flexible API, allowing for the software to be expanded and
improved on a regular and recurring basis. Many of the smart city initiatives are already
in planning and development and include the following:
Enhanced Mobile Integration
IKE’s powerful applications and functionality
could be integrated with users’ smart phones
to create a portable extension of the IKE
experience, and allow for increased interaction
between the city and users via a custom city
branded IOS/Android app.
Emergency Messaging
While we can currently display critical messages
at the direction of governmental authorities,
we can provide training and access allowing
for their co-opting of the system during
emergencies and uploading content directly.
Parking
Plans could include working with the city
and stakeholder groups to provide parking
information at the kiosks and to formulate a
solution that diminishes congestion.
Pedestrian Counters
IKE can be configured with hardware to
deliver real time pedestrian traffic counts
throughout Center City.
Increased Wi-fi and Cellular Functionality
IKE is configured on a cellular data network by
default, but if in proximity to a fiber network, can
be configured to become an access point for free
public wi-fi if desired by the city. Additionally, IKE
serves as a key node for small-cell deployment,
allowing for concealed antennas inside of the
unit, and providing the city with denser cellular
coverage, a key component in the establishment
of 5G networks in the city.
More Robust Mass Transit Application
Following collaboration with transit and other
stakeholders, the Getting Around application
could incorporate real time arrival and departure
data, and could offer ticketing services, as well
as provide more in-depth information from the
wealth of public transit options, including bus,
light rail, bike share, car share services and others.
Air Quality Monitoring
IKE can be configured with sensors to
monitor pollution and relative air quality,
and relay that information in real time to
city authorities.

Establishment of the IKE Smart City Network
Through a collaborative process with key stakeholders, we
work together to determine the exact size and placement
of the IKE network. We seek to balance placement at key
points throughout the city with practical considerations
such as ensuring appropriate sidewalk clearance.
