Biographies: Key Crew
Writer/Producer: Brett Snelgrove
Brett is a writer/associate producer with eight-years experience in television
production. Recently he has made the move across the pond to the UK from
Australia to further his career in television and digital media.
His Australian television career highlights include nutting out Hitler's
connection to Fanta for Shaun Micallef's NEWStopia; saving the planet one
household at a time on ABC TV's Carbon Cops; and transforming a bunch of
geeks into a soccer team on SBS TV's Nerds FC.
In 2005 he wrote and produced Domestic, a self-funded HD short film which
screened at 20+ festivals and won the 2006 St Kilda Film Festival's Editing
and Craft awards, plus numerous accolades for best film, best actor and
audience choice. Domestic is licensed to Atom Films and has screened on
television networks in Australia and overseas.
One of his earliest published works (his Primary School Press!) was a short
story about Spider-Man and Superman teaming up to rid the world of bad
guys. He is no longer so idealistic. He now knows that such a franchise
crossover would be impossible in today's marketplace.
Director: Katie Hides
Katie started in the Australian film and television industry 13 years ago,
working behind the scenes as a researcher, TV producer and assistant
director. Katie has a passion for dramatic storytelling and for the past six
years has been focusing her skills on directing short films and TVCs. In 2006
Katie was accepted into the highly competitive Australian Film, Television and
Radio School’s 1 Year Directing Course.
Katie has worked as an assistant director on a range of large budget dramas
including Kangaroo Jack (US), Farscape (US) and All Saints. In her spare
time, between continuing her training or making short films, Katie created
Film Kids - a community filmmaking workshop for children whose parents
don’t live together.
The Director’s Cut, a short film directed by Katie, was selected for the 2005
Tropfest Best of The Rest as well as The Comedy Channel Short Film Festival
and is currently screening on Foxtel’s The Comedy Channel.
DOP: Marcus Hides
Marcus is a Sydney-based Director of Photography and has been working in
camera departments for the past 25 years. At the age of 17, Marcus started
in the News Camera Department at Channel Seven Sydney. From there he
progressed to shooting documentaries and finally to working as a Director of
Photography on a diverse mixture of lifestyle shows, television dramas,
features films and commercials.
Marcus has won awards from the Australian Cinematographer’s Society for his
previous short films and his work on the Australian travel show, Getaway.
Five of his last short films have been finalists at Tropfest, with Buried winning
1st Prize in 2003. The Director’s Cut, a short film shot by Marcus, was
selected for the 2005 Tropfest Best of The Rest as well as The Comedy

Channel Short Film Festival and is currently screening on Foxtel’s The Comedy
Channel.
Marcus continues to work as a Director of Photography in the Film and
Television industry and has joined forces with his director wife, Katie, to
create work in the very competitive TVC industry.

Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Gun in Cheek, R&J and Accidental
Death of An Anarchist.
Film and TV credits include: Home And Away, Water Rats, Double The Fist and
All Saints.
Lawrence, a qualified Fight Director, is one of Sydney’s most recognised
authorities on Stage Combat for Theatre & Film. He is fully qualified by the
Society of Australian Fight Directors (SAFDi) and excels in numerous weapon
styles, unarmed combat and slapstick.
As a Fight Director, Lawrence has worked regularly for numerous theatre and
film companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Griffin, Company B
Belvoir, Opera Australia, NIDA and ABC Television.

Director’s Statement
I first saw Domestic on stage in Sydney when I was invited to a performance by
writer/producer Brett Snelgrove, who was keen to make his play into a film. I
loved the stage play, as did the rest of the audience, and I became very excited
at the opportunity to direct it for the big screen.
As a director I make films to tell stories about relationships, as I believe they’re
the foundation of our lives.
Yasmin and Kyle’s relationship is like most, except that they happen to have
extraordinary combat skills. And like most relationships there is something
exciting but also deeply upsetting about the power struggle they engage in.
Most of the work done in pre-production was adapting the play to the screen.
Theatre doesn’t translate directly to film because audiences come to the stage
prepared to suspend their disbelief, whereas in film the camera is right there in
the actor’s faces so authenticity is a must.
The shoot brought together a remarkable group of people, both experienced and
new to the film industry, but all completely committed to the project. In postproduction we encountered a few technical difficulties but despite these the story
held strong.
Domestic is a wonderful reminder that it’s not about the ground we gain but what
we give up that makes our relationships work.
Writer/Producer’s Statement
When I first proposed Domestic to Lawrence and Patricia for the Short & Sweet
Theatre Festival I knew it was an ambitious project. With scripts restricted to ten
minutes, a tight turn around between each play and the real danger of being
sliced and diced night after night, the demand on their skills as actors and fight
combatants was enormous. With Lawrence directing, their hard work paid off
when we won the festival’s People’s Choice Award and fuelled by this success I
recruited the director and DOP team of Katie and Marcus Hides to re-invent
Domestic for film.
It was a fight all the way. The first blow was finding a location. Not surprisingly,
there weren’t many contenders brave enough to allow a film crew to invade their
home for round after round of dramatised domestic violence. The second hit
knocked the wind out of me. Renovations were due to start in the house next
door to our location the same day as our shoot. I thought we were KO’d for sure
but I mustered up my courage and before I knew it I was bribing our new
neighbour to delay his long overdue renovations and even convinced him to
“lend” us electricity in his absence!
From there we ducked and weaved our way through tearing up the owner’s lino
with countless retakes of plate smashing, snapping our saucepan Hero Prop
(forcing Lawrence to hold it in place when we couldn’t fix or replace it) and
navigating the minefield of misinformation and guesswork about whether to shoot
and edit 25 fps or 24 fps on our Panasonic Varicam HD camera.
As the writer and producer of Domestic, my learning curve involved taking hit
after hit and a lot of fancy footwork to see it through to the end. I’m thankful to
those who contributed their expertise and guidance to help Domestic make it to
the screen.
