What formalities do you need to complete?
• Are you are on a European exchange programme?
If so, most of the formalities have been completed when you enrolled at your university in your home country.
In this case, you were affiliated to a social security scheme in your home country. Your medical costs can be covered during your stay in France
if you carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you.
• What if you are not on a European exchange programme and do not hold an EHIC covering the full academic year?
You must join the French student social security scheme if you are under 28 years of age. You must then choose a student social
security provider when enrolling at the academic institution of your choice.
Just tick if you wish to select LMDE as your student social security provider:

If you would like to get to grips with the French healthcare system, request our free ‘International students’ guide’ (accueil des étudiants étrangers),
available in French and English, from all LMDE branches (while stocks last).
The French healthcare system
If you don’t have the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the form required by a reciprocal agreement between your home country and France,
you must comply with the care pathway system in order to obtain treatment and be reimbursed properly.
• You must nominate an attending general practitioner (GP)
Your local Sécurité Sociale office can provide you with the necessary form which must be completed by the doctor you
have nominated. You must send the form back to your social security office once it has been completed and signed by your
doctor. Your GP will provide you with routine medical care and will refer you to a specialist if s/he deems it necessary.
You will be reimbursed and incur no financial penalties if you follow the care pathway. However, a €1 fixed
patient's contribution is automatically deducted from reimbursements for consultations and medical treatment
provided by a doctor and for medical tests. This contribution cannot be refunded by your local social security
office or by your private health insurance provider (mutual insurance company), unless you are eligible for the
supplementary universal health cover (CMU complémentaire).
• What happens if you do not nominate an attending GP?
If you do not follow the healthcare pathway, you may consult any doctor of your choice but will be reimbursed
at a lower rate by your local social security office. Furthermore, the specialists whom you consult are allowed
to charge higher fees. You will have to pay all of this ‘extra charge’.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU NEED INPATIENT HOSPITAL CARE?
If your state of health requires this, you can go to the hospital of your choice. The hospital can be state-run or private. NB: if the private hospital is not
conventionné (its fees are not state-regulated), the French National Health Insurance scheme (Assurance Maladie) will reimburse a reduced amount.
80 - 100% of the fees set by the French social security system will be covered for inpatient hospital care. As a general rule, you will have to pay
the patient charge (ticket modérateur), the fixed daily hospital fee (forfait journalier hospitalier), the fixed patient's contribution (participation
assuré) of €18, as well as the costs of any supplementary services that you use (a private room, for example).
HOW SHOULD YOU OBTAIN MEDICINES?
You will need a prescription from your attending GP and your Carte Vitale (green French national health insurance card) to obtain medicines.
Medicines are not available free of charge under the French system. 15%, 30%, 60% or 100% of the cost is reimbursed depending on the medicine
in question. However, the cost of some medicines is not reimbursed. You will therefore have to make a financial contribution towards each item.
The social security information in
this guide has been published as part
of the agreement between LMDE and
the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

If you wish to obtain a higher level of reimbursement
PLEASE NOTE! THE FRENCH SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME
DOES NOT REIMBURSE 100 % (1) OF YOUR HEALTHCARE COSTS
To ensure a higher level of reimbursement, LMDE has developed a range of five top-up health insurance policies, designed by students
for students. There is no need to complete a health questionnaire and the policies take effect on 1 October 2011, if you take out a 12-month policy before
31 December 2011. You just need to choose the policy that best meets your needs (specialist consultations, glasses, dental care, etc).

The “Tous Soins“ (All-inclusive) top-up health insurance policy is the most popular with LMDE policyholders; it
has been designed to offer optimal cover for all your healthcare needs by covering more specific healthcare services
(dental, optical, gynaecological, psychiatric, paramedical,
etc) and by facilitating preventive care (contraception,
condoms, vaccinations, etc).
➽ An example of how the policy works…
Thomas buys four boxes of medicines
Portion paid
(blue label medicines, 30% reimburby the French
Portion social security
sed) at the chemist’s, costing €50 in
paid by system: €13
total. His LMDE social security office
the LMDE
reimburses him €13 (30% of the cost
top-up health
minus the medical excess of €0.50 per
insurance scheme: €35 Medical excess: €2
(portion paid by
box). As he holds a "Tous Soins" top-up
the policyholder)
health insurance policy, LMDE will also
refund him €35, meaning that Thomas only has to pay the €2 medical
excess from his initial expenditure of €50.
LMDE offers other policies; to find out more,
go to www.lmde.com or visit an LMDE branch.
