The grid below shows activities around Y1’s topic of “Paws, Claws and Whiskers”.
Homework is due back week beginning Monday 22nd May.
The key skills children will be developing:
Research: Finding out about animals and their environments using the internet and books.
Literacy: Writing poems, stories and nursery rhymes.
Mathematics: Exploring measurement to record animal facts in graphs.
Science: Exploring what it means to be a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.
Creative: Developing and exploring joining techniques to create artwork. Using drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share ideas and experiences.
Design and Make





Make an animal mask or hat using junk materials
found at home.
Make a scrapbook all about your pet or the pet of
a friend or family member. What is the pet’s
name? What type and breed of animal is it? Add
photographs and interesting things they do or
like.
Make a bird feeder for your garden. Then watch
every day for bird visits and document what you
see!
Draw/paint the camouflage markings of a range
of animals such as leopards, giraffes or tigers.
Create a collage of your favourite animal using
various materials found at home.
Maths


Find out about your family’s and friends’
different pets. Record the results as a block
graph or pictogram. Which pet is the most
popular? How do you know?
Research and record the figures for the fastest,
heaviest, oldest, strongest and tallest animal.
Creative Writing



Write out your favourite animal poem, nursery
rhyme or story in your best handwriting.
Illustrate it and practise reading it aloud with
lots of expression.
Create your own animal poem, nursery rhyme or
story about your favourite animal.
Find out the names of your favourite animals in a
language of your choice and make a mini book.
Research




Wider World


Visit your local library to find stories, poems and
non-fiction books. Choose your favourite and
draw a picture. Can you also write sentences
about why you liked it?
Visit a farm or zoo. Create a diary of your day
out with photographs, drawings and diagrams.
Find out about unusual pets using non-fiction
books and the internet. Download a photograph
of the most interesting and label the photograph.
What does it eat? How should it be cared for?
Collect some ‘Amazing Animal Facts!’ about fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals! Which
animal is the fastest/strongest/heaviest? Write
down the most amazing facts.
Locate on a world map or globe where all your
favourite animals come from. What type of
weather and environments do you get in each
country?
Watch documentary footage of animals in the
wild. Try making your own mini wildlife
documentary. Can you add a voiceover?
Be a Scientist

Explain to your family/friends what it means to
be a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. Make a
PowerPoint presentation or a book with a
slide/page for each group.
