MATERIAL SPECIFICATION Fabrics: Our Tipis are made using Polycotton Canvas, Synethic Canvas or PVC with PVC mudwalls. All fabrics are Fire Retardant. We sew fabrics using white, anti-wick thread. Poles: Wooden Softwood, Danish Oiled Poles, sourced sustainably. The 2 starter King Poles are 4 ½” diameter, the rest are 2 ¾” diameter. All King and Queen poles can be sleeved to reduce the length for transporting. Structural Crown; Created using galvanised steel Ropes: White Polypropylene, Hempex style or Ratchet Straps Stakes & Pegs: 30”Mushroom Headed Iron Stakes, 12”wooden pegs As with all our Marquees, our Giant Tipi is exclusively designed and manufactured in UK BARKERS Marquees Fa b ric eng ineering a titsb est GIANT TIPI - MANUAL IDEAL FOR: • FESTIVALS • PARTIES AND WEDDINGS • GLAMPING VENUES Illustration of linked Tipis CHANGING THE SHAPE/LINKING GIANT TIPIS The Tipi’s fabric roof can be lifted and held out near horizontally to create a skirt above head height (2.2m), creating a larger covered space. In this configuration the Giant Tipis can be linked together using PVC gutters, creating interesting covered spaces for prestigious events. Add walls to enclose the Tipi (singular or multiple) space. Our walls are dutch laced together and pegged down to reduce drafts. SIZE & COMPONENT LENGTHS: Diameter with walls to ground – 10m Area with walls to ground - 72 sq m Height to structural crown – 6.25m Entrances – 2 off zippered 1.8m wide by 2.1m high zip up entrances. (max) Diameter with walls raised – 12.1m Area with walls raised – 113 sq m Height to top of spikes– 7.4m Longest pole – 8m – sleeved to 4.5m EASY ASSEMBLY Our Giant Tipi is designed to minimise working at heights. To construct and de-rig this Marquee we have drawn on our Pole Marquee expertise and designed a Tipi where the fabric is attached to ‘starter’or King poles. These first two poles swing up using pulleys, thus eliminating the problem of dragging a large fabric sheet over a pole frame by using ladders and a lot more hard work.. Our Giant Tipi should take no more than 6 man hours to construct. The optional Walling panels are laced together and supported by hooking onto the roof covers; these are then pegged down with wooden pegs. Step 1 – Layout STAKE POINT B Identify the area on which the tent is to be erected (must be a soft surface to allow the steel stakes to be driven). If constructing on hardstanding provision must be made to securely anchor at stake points. Mark the outline on the ground with a string line, as shown in diagram for 10m diameter Tipi. Lay out the components as shown and drive 30”Iron Stakes in at locations shown. CENTRE 4937mm HINT: It is best to pull the tent up into the wind. 7000mm Heavy duty foot plates STAKE POINT A Heavy duty crown 10000mm BARKERS Marquees T: 0044 (0) 1883 337099 E: [email protected] Address: W: www. barkersmarquees.co.uk 1 St Katharines Road, Caterham, Surrey, CR3 6ST. BARKERS Marquees Giant Tipi User Manual Fa b ric eng ineering a titsb e st Step 2 – Assemble King Poles Identify the 2 heavier King Poles and sleeve together to create full 7.4m length. Insert into galvanised steel crown at opposite sides of crown. Position bottom of Poles at opposite side of decagon, fit base plates onto bottom fitting with pin and “R”clip and fix base plates with 2 stakes each. Fix Baseplate with 2 stakes at point A, 7m from centre of Tipi, at right angles to line between King Pole bases. Drive stake into point B, 5m from centre of Tipi, continuing on line from Point A to centre point. See diagram Lift the crown and queen poles and prop them onto a suitable support (eg 2 x Trestles/ sawhorse), if possible make about 2m high to avoid having to lift the whole assembly later. Sleeve the smaller queen poles together and push the spikes into the eye bolt rings around the crown, securing with an “R”clip, Swing them round so they are alongside the king poles (8 to each) and temporarily lash to King pole. If you prefer to keep the weight down at this phase you can use a ladder (ensure all working at height certification is available) to fit queen poles to false crown after erecting king poles. 5000mm STAKE POINT B Step 3 – Roof Fabrics CENTRE 7000mm Pull out Roof Fabric and Cowl from transport bags. Use Groundsheet to maintain clean canvas if necessary. Pull Roof Fabric over Steel Crown - use 2 of the eyelets and tie in position onto the crown to prevent it slipping down - these will have to be removed later - so will require the use of a ladder. Pull cowl on top of crown and undo ropes, tying off to King pole base plate to hold in position. STAKE POINT A Tie off single guy ropes to crown, 1 each side at right angles to king poles. Ensure the guy with the shackle spliced at halfway is toward the direction we are going to raise the tipi at point A. 10000mm guy rope Push false crown poles onto spikes wall pole pull wall pole Step 4 – Hoist to vertical Tie off Hoisting Tackle to baseplate at point A. Pull Hoisting Tackle out towards the Tipi crown so that pulley blocks are approximately 6-7m apart. Tie off end of Hoisting Tackle to single guy rope using ‘sheet bend’or similar knot. Tie off loose single guy to stake at point B If not already done in step 2, lift the crown and prop onto a wall pole (spike into ground) - about 2m high Using either a wall pole or longer, insert a wall pole spike into the becket (swivel ring) on the double pulley block of the Hoisting Tackle, whilst keeping tension on the pulling rope (fall). Prop wall pole up, leaning toward the tipi as this will be the pivot that lifts the tipi. Pull the fall rope of the Hoisting Tackle until the Tipi King poles are vertical. Tie off the Hoisting Tackle to the base plate and check the reverse guy is still tied off securely at points A and B. NOTE- ENSURE KING POLES ARE VERTICAL / PERPENDICULAR TO THE GROUND LEVEL Hoisting tackle Pull up canvas and poles using supplied Hoisting Tackle. STAGE 4: Pull Canvas out to base plates to make roof for fitting poles BARKERS Marquees Fa b ric eng ineering a titsb e st Step 5 – Tension Canvas out Tension out Canvas before inserting Poles using the ratchet guys, this will give you room to swing the queen poles out and fix. NOTE- ENSURE KING POLES ARE VERTICAL / PERPENDICULAR TO THE GROUND LEVEL BEFORE TYING OUT TO AVOID ISSUES WHEN FITTING RIM RAILS Step 6 – fix Poles and rim rails STAGE 5: Push remaining poles into place under canvas and pin onto base plates, while fitting rim rails Unlash the queen poles and swing out to approximately correct locations. OR if installing queen poles at this stage use a ladder to push pole spikes into eye bolts on the galvanised crown. Rim Rails Fitting the Hoisting Tackle side first, fix a rim rail to King pole and pull first queen pole round tight and fix rim rail by dropping hooks into top hats and tighten thumb screw. Repeat next 3 to that side It is important that the rim rail is a tight fit.to avoid problems with the last one not fitting. Repeat for the second side, If the last rail is tight you may need to pull the King pole and crown over to loosen off. As moving around the structure fitting rim rails, lift poles to fit base plates to base of queen poles and stake down (1 per plate). Step 7 - Peg down Release ratchets. Pull fabrics out to shape. Peg perimeter down to ground by twisting wooden pegs into the mudwall rope and knocking into the ground. Tie off ropes to cowls. Tension ratchets. CHECK ANCHORAGE and TIPI FABRICS are LACED UP before leaving site. Step 8 - Optional– Add vertical walls Unpeg perimeter where you want walls Loosen gusset ties, so skirt can expand. Raise up with 7’wall poles, tension onto stakes with ratchet guys. Hang vertical walls using hooks - if only part needed, use angled panels first. Lace walls together. Peg walls down to ground by twisting wooden pegs into mudwall rope and knocking into the ground.
