Description:
Writing across the genres of short and long fiction, poetry, and literary criticism, Edgar Allan Poe went from relatively minor popularity in his own time to becoming a figure of near‐cult status in American literature. His tales of terror, his detective stories, and his lyrical poetry have captured fresh audiences in the twenty‐first century, and his stylistic approaches to writing are of keen interest to a new generation of literary critics.
This course will examine a broad selection of Poe’s writing, from fiction – including his only novel – and poetry to essays on contemporary writers and the literary scene of his day. Among the theoretical approaches we will use are gender theory, New Criticism, psychoanalysis, and classical rhetoric.
