The points of focus in this unit include the impact of people and place on the economic, politic, and
social development of North Carolina communities, the settlement patterns of diverse cultural groups,
and the impact of historical events on communities. Students will develop an understanding of
 How the settlement patterns of diverse cultural groups affected the development of regions in
North Carolina.
 Changes to communities throughout the regions of North Carolina brought about by people,
events, and developments.
 The role of North Carolina in major conflicts and wars (American Revolution, Civil War) and the
impact of such historical events on communities.
