Award For Higher Arts Education
RAVE (Recognizing Arts Vaughan Excellence) Awards
This annual award aims to assist the emerging talent of Vaughan
secondary and post-secondary students pursuing a formal education in
the arts. Through this meaningful umbrella program of the RAVE Awards
(Recognizing Arts Vaughan Excellence), two $3,000 City of Vaughan
Award for Higher Arts Education scholarships are distributed annually
to outstanding Vaughan students enrolled in secondary and postsecondary arts education programs. Selection is based on academic
merit, demonstrated community leadership and financial need.
An annual community celebration of excellence and achievement in
the arts where nominations are accepted in three separate disciplines:
Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Literary Arts. One RAVE award may
be distributed within each of the following four categories: Patron of
the Arts, Art Educator/Mentor, Practicing Artist, Rising Star. Winners
are announced at the official RAVE Awards Reception.
The City Playhouse Theatre
The City of Vaughan celebrates diversity by featuring designated monthly
cultural celebrations including but not limited to Black History Month,
Asian and South Asian Heritage Month and Italian Heritage Month,
showcasing a variety of cultural exhibits, displays and performances.
The City Playhouse Theatre prides itself in providing quality family
entertainment, educational programs, and training for young aspiring
talent through performing theatre and visual arts courses for children,
youth and adults. Theatre shows include a diverse mix of top-notch
professional and community productions featuring opera, dance,
music and drama.
Culture Days
Vaughan IN FOCUS: A Community Photography Exhibition
Culture Days is a free national celebration of Arts and Culture enjoyed
by over 1,500 participants, visitors and residents of Vaughan each
year. This spectacular 2-day event celebrates Vaughan’s diverse
and multi-talented cultural groups, organizations, individual artists,
creators and performers as they offer eclectic hands-on, interactive
family-fun activities.
Both professional and amateur photographers who live in Vaughan
are encouraged to focus their creative vision on an aspect of the
City’s diverse character, and through still photography document the
vibrant spirit of Vaughan’s people, places or things. A commemorative
photography exhibition follows, showcasing local talent through
outstanding images selected by a respected panel of professional jurors.
Doors Open
Vaughan Juried Exhibition: An Art Integration Project
Doors Open is a much anticipated, free 2-day province-wide celebration
offering thousands of residents and visitors to the City of Vaughan an
opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity, and in turn appreciate the
varied architecturally brilliant heritage sites, environmentally acclaimed
and superb historical points of interest the City of Vaughan has to offer.
Building on the successes of the previous five years, Vaughan and
Greater Toronto Area artists are once again invited to submit original
works of art to be considered by a respected adjudication panel for a
prominent public art exhibition. Selected works by both established
and emerging artists are judged for the following cash awards: Best in
Show, Reserve Best in Show and the People’s Choice. An honorarium
may also be awarded for a work from the juried exhibition selected for
acquisition in the City’s growing corporate art collection destined for
future installation in a designated City centre/space through the Art
Integration Program.
Celebrating Diversity
Multi-Media Film Festival
The Multimedia Film Festival of York Region in collaboration with the City
of Vaughan annually hosts a screening of films from the Multimedia Film
Festival celebrating the accomplishments of Vaughan and York Region’s
upcoming filmmakers. Multimedia submissions explore the varied and
rich identities, as well as the experiences, strengths and challenges of
individuals within our Region and within our communities. Film genre
screenings include documentaries, docu-dramas, drama and animation
serving to inform and educate on life in Vaughan and York Region.
My Vaughan Blooms School Program
The My Vaughan Blooms School Program initiative is aimed at
supporting the celebration of achievements, successes, uniqueness and
creativity exemplified by students in schools across Vaughan. Our vision
encompasses encouraging environmental responsibility, community
beautification and goodwill programming through active involvement
of youth in various education enhancing experiences.
National Youth Arts Week
National Youth Arts Week celebrates simultaneous youth-led,
community-based events and projects across the City of Vaughan,
created, developed and implemented by youth. This initiative provides
an exceptional opportunity for great creative expression as well as a
platform for youth to exchange ideas and showcase talents.
Vaughan Of A Kind Art + Craft Show
Artisans participate in this highly anticipated annual one-day art and
craft show back by popular demand for its sixth consecutive year.
The show attended by more than 1,000 shoppers, features over 70
artisans from the City of Vaughan and the Greater Toronto Area who
exhibit a wealth of high caliber craftsmanship. Vendors deck the halls
with an assortment of sought after, hand-crafted items.
Vaughan Atrium Gallery: on the slate
& Vaughan Arts Space
Both public exhibition spaces are dedicated to nurturing the creative
spirit of the arts by engaging the community in collaborative
initiatives designed to foster art appreciation, artistic achievement
and cultural identity. An eclectic range of art programs profiles
resident and regional talent through art exhibitions, cultural
celebrations and special events. The Atrium Gallery feature wall, on
the SLATE, is located at City Hall; and the Vaughan Arts Space is
annexed to the Maple Community Centre.
