Day 9 Monday 25th April
After breakfast you will begin your day’s
sightseeing tour with a visit to Toul Sleng
Genocide Museum to learn about the
darkest period of Cambodian history. After
the Khmer Rouge, under Pol Pot,
outlawed education, this former school
was converted to a torture and confession
centre. Horrific tortures were carried out to
elicit confessions, usually of being a CIA
or KGB agent, from victims as young as
12 years old. Only seven former inmates
of this vile prison survived to tell the tale.
This ‘tourist attractions’ is the second most
visited site after Angkor Wat, in Cambodia
and you will find this a very sobering
experience. Once the ‘criminals’ had
been sentenced they were despatched to
the ‘Killing Fields’ (Cheung Ek) killed and
buried in mass grave. This could be a very
emotional experience. Your mood will be
lightened by an excellent lunch in a local
restaurant followed by a visit to the
National Museum with its stunning
collection of Khmer artwork. The museum
has over five thousand objects on display
including the legendary statue of the
‘Leper King’, and a wonderful collection of
bronzes and pottery, many dating back to
the classical period of Angkor – 10th – 14th
century AD. Late afternoon you will enjoy
a boat cruise on the Mekong River to
watch the sun setting over this fascinating
city.

Day 11 Wednesday 27th April
Day 10 Tuesday 26th April
A very different day’s sightseeing awaits
you today. You take a morning trip to
Udong Mountain (meaning ‘supreme’),
the former Royal capital of Cambodia. It
was established after the decline of the
Khmer Empire from plague and served
as a royal capital until 1866. There are
many ‘stupas’ of the ancient kings on
top of the mountains, one of the newer
ones is said to contain the eyebrow
hairs and a piece of bone from Buddha
himself! It was extensively bombed by
American forces during the Vietnam
War and damaged by the Khmer Rouge
in 1977. These remains of these ancient
sites have many difficult and irregular
steps so please be careful. However,
your efforts will be rewarded by the
magnificent views from the top of the
hills across the former capital city and
the surrounding countryside. Lunch will
be served at a local restaurant before
embarking on your afternoon visit to the
floating village of Kampong Luang on
the Tonle Sap Lake. This extraordinary
village is home to around 10,000
inhabitants, all living in floating houses.

today. You begin with a morning visit to
the South Gate of Angkor Thom and

carving is so delicate and intricate that it is
said that they were carved by women.

Buddhist monks are daily visitors to
Angkor Wat and their bright orange
costumes make a vibrant contrast to the
grey stone of the temples. The “lost city”
of Angkor Wat first attracted European
interest in the late 1800’s after Cambodia
was colonised by the French. Today this
