After the Khmer Rouge, under Pol Pot, outlawed education, this former school was converted to a torture and confession centre. Horrific tortures were carried out to elicit confessions, usually of being a CIA or KGB agent, from victims as young as 12 years old. Only seven former inmates of this vile prison survived to tell the tale. This ‘tourist attractions’ is the second most visited site after Angkor Wat, in Cambodia and you will find this a very sobering experience. Once the ‘criminals’ had been sentenced they were despatched to the ‘Killing Fields’ (Cheung Ek) killed and buried in mass grave. This could be a very emotional experience. Your mood will be lightened by an excellent lunch in a local restaurant followed by a visit to the National Museum with its stunning collection of Khmer artwork. The museum has over five thousand objects on display including the legendary statue of the ‘Leper King’, and a wonderful collection of bronzes and pottery, many dating back to the classical period of Angkor – 10th – 14th century AD. You take a morning trip to Udong Mountain (meaning ‘supreme’), the former Royal capital of Cambodia. It was established after the decline of the Khmer Empire from plague and served as a royal capital until 1866. There are many ‘stupas’ of the ancient kings on top of the mountains, one of the newer ones is said to contain the eyebrow hairs and a piece of bone from Buddha himself! It was extensively bombed by American forces during the Vietnam War and damaged by the Khmer Rouge in 1977. These remains of these ancient sites have many difficult and irregular steps so please be careful. However, your efforts will be rewarded by the magnificent views from the top of the hills across the former capital city and the surrounding countryside. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant before embarking on your afternoon visit to the floating village of Kampong Luang on the Tonle Sap Lake. The museum houses an interpretive centre for the history of the Khmer empire, as well as displaying some of the many delicate and priceless artefacts rescued from the Angkor archaeological complex. Your next stop on today’s tour is the Artisan Angkor. Created in 1999, the Artisan Angkor village helps young people to train and work in traditional crafts such as stone & wood carving, gilding and silk processing. From here you visit a silk farm and a local market. After lunch you have a relaxing cruise on Tonle Sap Lake. You begin with a morning visit to the South Gate of Angkor Thom and Bayon Temple, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Angkor Thom literally means ‘great city’. The city was founded by Angkor’s greatest king, Jayavarman VII (reigned 1181 - 1219) and at its height Angkor Thom governed a population of more than one million people in the surrounding area. Dating from the 12th-century, Bayon Day 6 Friday 22nd April Another full day sightseeing awaits you today. Your first visit will take you 30 kms out of Siem Reap to Banteay Srei, which literally translates as “Citadel of Women”. Banteay is a beautiful 10th-century Hindu temple complex. The temple is surrounded by walls with peaked structures covered in bas-reliefs. The carving is so delicate and intricate that it is said that they were carved by women. Following lunch you make your way south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the 12th-century - Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is the best preserved example of Khmer architecture in Cambodia and is definitely the most well know, some rate it amongst the “seven wonders of the world”. Buddhist monks are daily visitors to Angkor Wat and their bright orange costumes make a vibrant contrast to the grey stone of the temples. The “lost city” of Angkor Wat first attracted European interest in the late 1800’s after Cambodia was colonised by the French. Today this Day 7 Saturday 23rd April Today we transfer by road to Kampong Thom. Travel time is approximately 2 hours. You will have a little free time to relax before your afternoon sightseeing commences. Step into an atmospheric forest environment where you will discover the impressive pre-Angkorian temple complex of Sambor Prei Kuk. The complex consists of more than 100 individual temples scattered throughout the forest, among them some of the oldest structures in the country. The main temple group, Prasat Sambor, is dedicated to Gambhireshvrara, one of Shiva’s many incarnations. Here you can see some excellent examples of delicate pink brick carving, some in very good condition, and also a series of large vonis (female fertility symbols) decorating the central tower.
