Membership News:
From the Studio of Carl Matthes:
In November, Glendale Branch member Carl Matthes will give three programs as part of a new educational
collaboration between MTAC Branches and the Southern California Junior Bach Festival. The new
collaboration features a Lecture-Demonstration on Bach and his music.
Carl’s program, entitled "Bach Rediscovered," is built around Paul Elie's book “Reinventing Bach” and Karl
Geiringer's book, “J.S. Bach: The Culmination of an Era.” He will speak about the relevance of Bach and the
SCJBF to our teaching and students. He will use popular and accessible pieces by Bach to demonstrate choices
for tone/touch, ornamentation, tempo, dynamics and pedaling as well as a few practice techniques.
Demonstration repertoire will include excerpts from: Short Preludes, Inventions, Preludes, WTC Bk. 1; Prelude
& Fugue, WTC Bk. 2; English Suite #3 g minor; Toccata, G Major; Italian Concerto; Busoni's transcription of
the Organ Toccata from Toccata and Fugue, d minor, BWV 565, Bach's transcription of the Oboe Concerto, 2nd
movement, by Allessandro Marcello, d minor, BWV 974; and Siloti's transcription of the Organ Prelude g
minor.
Carl suggests that teachers may check-out the following YouTube performances of Bach's c minor prelude
WTC Bk 1 as examples:

From the studio of Joletta Sells:
You are warmly invited to an evening of world-class soprano music featuring Soprani Compagni!
Soprani Compagni is comprised of sopranos Dr. Lisa Dawson and Dr. Tammie Huntington, and pianist Dr.
Phoenix Park-Kim. Together they research, compile and perform soprano art song duets, oratorio and opera
scenes, modeling soprano collaboration; and commission new works for soprano duet. Specifically, their current
project, "Portraits of Women" is an expansion of soprano duet repertoire that emphasizes the contributions of
women in our society. Soprani Compagni made their Carnegie Hall debut in March 2012. The upcoming recital
is simply one event on their 2016-2017 "Portraits of Women" world tour. The recital will include both old and
new music, such as Vivaldi's Laudamus te, from Gloria, RV 589, and Who Am I (the story of Mary and
Elizabeth) written by Todd Syswerda. Pianist, Dr. Phoenix Park-Kim, will also perform Liszt's Rhapsodie
espagnole.
