Page 1 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Introduction Level 5 Reading for Information Introduction Welcome to Level 5 of Reading for Information. In this lesson you will continue to sharpen your reading skills. In level 5 the materials are more detailed, more complicated and cover broader topics. You may also encounter specialized phrases such as technical terms and jargon. You will be applying the same skills you have used in earlier levels. However you will have to use more judgment to apply the skills to more complex documents. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 2 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Introduction In Level 5, You Will Learn To: ¾ Understand the paraphrased definition of jargon or technical terms defined in the passage. ¾ Use jargon or technical terms appropriately in describing situations stated in the passages. ¾ Understand the definitions of acronyms that are defined in the passage. ¾ Identify the appropriate definition of words with multiple meanings based on the context of the passage. ¾ Apply information given in a passage to situations that are not directly described in that passage. ¾ Apply more complicated instructions involving conditionals (if X happens, then it will lead to Y) or procedures with a number of steps. © 1997, ACT, Inc. Page 3 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Level 5 Reading for Information Technical Jargon Sometimes writers use technical terms when they write, which makes the reading process more challenging. This use of specialized terms is sometimes called jargon. This is more common in documents used in specific jobs or trades. Your goal, however, is to read technical information with the same ease and fluency you have learned to read non-technical information. The process is exactly the same. The key is in focusing on the message as a whole, not on the technical terms or on the jargon. You can use the same techniques practiced in levels 3 and 4. These include looking for definitions in the sentence, and examining the context or meaning of the surrounding sentences. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 4 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Using Context Look at the following paragraph. Several words are missing. See if you can tell what words should be placed in the blanks. Look at the context of the sentence. What do you think the writer was trying to say in each sentence? Only about thirty percent of family businesses survive their founders and make it to the second ________, according to most ___________ on the subject. The rest are sold or go _______________. The statistics worsen with the passage of time. Only half of those _________ that live through the transition to the second generation will __________ as a family business into the third or fourth generation. Look at the first blank. It talks about businesses which make it to the second something. But look later in the paragraph. There it talks about living through the transition to the second generation. Would generation fit into the first blank? Yes, it would. What about the next blank? It says according to most _______ on the subject. The writer is quoting the facts from another source. Who would you get the facts from? From an expert on the subject. Experts will fit into the blank. Now you try filling in the rest of the blanks. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 5 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Explanation Here is the paragraph with all of the blanks filled in. Check your answers with those shown. How did you do? You knew what words were omitted based upon the context of the paragraph. Certain words just made sense in the blanks. Although your answers may not be exactly the same, you were probably close. Only about thirty percent of family businesses survive their founders and make it to the second generation, according to most experts on the subject. The rest are sold or go bankrupt. The statistics worsen with the passage of time. Only half of those busineses that live through the transition to the second generation will survive as a family business into the third or fourth generation. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. As you are reading, try to figure out what word would fit into the blank spaces. Then, go back and read the article a second time. In your mind, fill in the blank spaces with appropriate words. You may use a dictionary if you like. Finally, read the article a third time to see if all the words make sense. Page 13 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Reading Process The same reading process is used when you are reading information that contains technical terminology or jargon. Read the information to understand its general meaning. You will understand most of the technical words or jargon based on the context of the paragraph. Although the dictionary is always there for your use, try not to get into the habit of looking up every word. Do not focus on the specific words you may not know the first time you read a paragraph. Rather, try to understand the paragraph in general. Then you can go back a second time to define the words you did not understand. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. Page 14 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Technical Jargon Problem 5 The paragraph below is loaded with specialized terminology that may be very difficult to define. What are a few words you find difficult? Read the paragraph through first for the general meaning. Read it for a second time to understand the technical jargon. The context of the paragraph should help you understand the words or phrases that are new to you. Information anxiety is the new disease of this century. Information anxiety elicits feelings of frustration, feelings of being continually behind and feelings of ignorance. We feel the effects of information anxiety when we look at the piles of papers, letters, memos, and reports on our desks, and we know we need to get through them. We also feel its effects when we go to a newsstand and see the hundreds of current magazines and newspapers that we will never find time to read, and when we go to a library and see dozens of recently published books that we will never peruse. Information anxiety is a kind of stupor, a feeling that we simply can't keep up because we can't read fast enough, or we don't know how to locate the information we need. Information anxiety is that sinking feeling that we don't have time to sort through or think about the myriad of data surrounding us. Refer to the paragraph above to answer the following question. Which of the following best defines information anxiety? Check the correct answer. _____ A. A fearful emotion causes by the large number of documents around us _____ B. A large amount of books, magazines and newspaper _____ C. An inability to read enough information _____ D. A lock of trips to the library Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. Page 17 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon Text for Technical Jargon Problems 9-11 The article below tells about chlorine. Read the article and answer the questions on the following pages. WHAT IS CHLORINE? A Natural Element Of the 112 elements that make up the world we live in, ninety-nine percent of the Earth's crust, atmosphere and oceans are comprised of just 12 elements by weight. They are oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, hydrogen, phosphorous, carbon, and chlorine. Yes, chlorine. In fact, chlorine accounts for more than two percent by weight of all seawater alone. Unique Structure Chlorine's extraordinary role in the world is related to its ability to bind to other elements and compounds to form new compounds. You see, chlorine's outer shell is missing one electron which makes it highly attractive to other atoms and electrons. This fact is also why chlorine is so useful in producing many man-made products, from thousands of consumer goods to pharmaceuticals and PVC pipes. Natural Abundance of Organochlorine Compounds Chlorine is part of our natural ecosystem. From inorganic forms such as salt to numerous organic forms, there are more than 1,500 chlorine compounds produced naturally. Volcanoes, forest fires, brush fires and other sources of natural combustion produce large quantities of organic chlorine compounds, including dioxins, chloromethane and others. Sponges, corals, sea slugs, jelly fish, seaweed, and many other marine creatures also produce chlorine compounds. And so do a wide variety of plants, seeds, trees, insects, amphibians, mammals, ferns, algae, fungi, mushrooms, and some fruit and vegetables. For many of these organisms, plants and animals, organic chlorine compounds (or organochlorines) are critical to survival, playing important roles in metabolism, chemical defense systems, growth, and even sex. A frog in Ecuador, for example, secretes a chlorinated alkaloid 500 times more powerful than morphine as a painkiller. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 21 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Interpreting Information Interpreting Information Problem 1 Read the paragraph below. The Information Age is profoundly transforming our world. Just as the Industrial Revolution changed the face of the land and the nature of the workplace -- replacing farms, woodlands and meadows with cities, factories and office buildings -- the Information Age is bringing an equally comprehensive, radical and even more rapid metamorphosis to the way we work and live. These changes mean that each of us face many challenges. The author states that the Information Age is transforming our world much like the Industrial Revolution changed the world years ago. Reading the paragraph, can you explain that statement in your own words? The information age will continue to change the way we work and live. Can you guess some of the ways that our lives are changing? Use your experience to think of ways. Which of the following changes is a result of the Information Age? Check the correct answer. _____ A. The use of automobiles _____ B. Jet air travel _____ C. Sometimes you have to interpret to find the answer. You must use your experience to apply the information. You may need to make calculations or decisions with the information. You may even need to guess what the writer meant when the document was written. Sometimes interpreting is not easy. But you will find this to be a necessary skill. Instructions and procedures can not always predict every possible situation. You will find in your job that you will have to make decisions by interpreting the meaning of the instructions. Page 30 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Acronyms SWAT IRS USA NASA CPA Level 5 Reading for Information Acronyms We have become a society of acronyms. For example, most people probably understand the following sentence: John Jones, a CPA who earned his BS at UCLA, just got a job with the IRS. When we are not using technical jargon, then we are using acronyms. An acronym is a series of letters that stand for a common series of words. They usually come from the first letter of the words, such as IRS for Internal Revenue Service. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 31 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Acronyms Using Acronyms We use acronyms so much, in fact, that we often forget what the letters actually stand for. Some acronyms are used so often that they actually become accepted as words, such as laser. Some other common acronyms include: USA - United States of America NBA - National Basketball Association DES - The Department of Economic Security Many businesses have developed their own acronyms. Unless you are associated with the industry, you may not know what the acronyms stand for. For example, do you know what IPS is? In the field of education, IPS is Information Processing Service. However, for Probation Officers, IPS is Intensive Probation Service. Acronyms can differ from agency to agency; that is why it is important to define them in your writing. It takes the guesswork out for the reader. Many writers, however, do not define their acronyms, so we are forced to use our prior knowledge or refer to a dictionary. Look at the following sentence and see if you know what the acronyms mean. After earning her MBA from BYSU in Utah, Jane Doe went on to become president of NOW and is very active in the ACLU. You can rewrite the statement above by replacing the acronyms with the words they stand for: After earning her Master's of Business Administration from Brigham Young State University in Utah, Jane went on to become president of the National Organization for Women and is very active in the American Civil Liberties Union. Here are some other acronyms that are so common you may not even think about what they stand for. Can you guess what they mean? Write out the meaning of each acronym: SCUBA AWOL RADAR LASER ZIPCODE NASA SWAT Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. You may recognize many of them. Sometimes you are given clues to the meaning of the acronym. You can look for these clues like you do for word meaning clues. The definition may be in the same sentence, or in a nearby one. Other times you will not be given the meaning. Then you have to guess based on the context. The sports world is a prime area that uses acronyms. They take something like the National Football League and, to make it easier, they refer to it as the NFL. That is a group of teams that plays each other during the season. When you hit the winter season, you might watch the NBA or the NHL. Starting in 1997, you will also be able to watch the WNBA. There are no common acronyms for baseball, but the game itself uses many. You might talk about the ERA of the pitchers or the RBIs of the batter. If you're busy, you might decide to record any of these on your VCR. You had better watch the copyright rules, or you will be investigated by the FBI. What do you think NBA and NHL stand for? Check the correct answer. _____ A. National Baseball Association, National Hockey League _____ B. National Baseball Association, National Handball League _____ C. National Basketball Association, National Hockey League _____ D. National Basketball Association, National Handball League Did you guess National Basketball Association and National Hockey League? You are correct! You can rule out the two answers with National Baseball Association because the paragraph told you there was no common acronym for baseball. The paragraph also contains the clue that the NBA and NHL are sports that are played in the winter. Both basketball and hockey are played in the winter. Also, handball is not a common TV spectator sport. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 47 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Words with Multiple Meanings Words with Multiple Meanings Problem 2 Read the paragraph below. Then we will define the words from the last page again. One of the most popular sports today is tennis. If you are playing singles for each game, one person is the server and the other person is the receiver. The server starts by serving the ball into the square on the receiver's side. If the server touches the baseline with either foot, it is called a foot fault. If the server serves the ball, and it hits the net and drops into the receiver's square, the service is called a let. The server then serves one more time. The game starts off at 0-0 or in tennis terms, "love-love." If both players have won the same number of points, it is called deuce, and the next point won by a player is called advantage for that player. If the same player wins the next point, he wins the game. The first player to win six gams wins the set. Now define the word shown below using the context in the paragraph above. What does love mean? Page 59 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Applying Instructions Instructions and Procedures In order to use instructions and procedures, you must: 1. Understand the technical words or jargon using the techniques you have practiced, and 2. Put them into action When instructions tell you to do something, they use action words, or verbs. These verbs tell you what you should do, like walk, take, call, write or open. Sometimes you will have to decide which of several actions you should take. The instructions will signal the decisions with words like if, when, in the event, and in case of. Here is a simple set of instructions. Look for the decisions and actions it asks you to take. If your car overheats, stop the car immediately. Open the hood but do not remove the radiator cap. If you remove the radiator cap when the car is hot, it may explode. It says that if your car overheats, then stop the car. This is a decision. If your car is not overheating, then you do not need to stop immediately. Open the hood is an action. It is implied that you should do this action if the previous decision is true. That is, you should open the hood if the car overheats and you have stopped the car. Page 67 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Applying Instructions Directions for Applying Instructions Problems 7-11 On the next page is a more complex example of instructions. It is part of a federal tax form (Form W-4 (1998) ). Although this may seem impossibly complex, it is not. It is just longer. You can follow these instructions by simply taking it one step at a time. You will be using this form for the next five (5) questions. You will use the information in the box below and the instructions in the W-4 on the next page to answer the questions in Applying Instructions Problems 7-11. You will work with this information one piece at a time. This way you will see how easy it can be. You are a 30 year-old divorced man You claim yourself; no one else can claim you You work one full-time job and one part-time job You earn $35,000 a year on your full-time job You earn only about $10,000 a year on your part-time job You have two children that you support You have no dependent care expenses You pay all the expenses for keeping up your home Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 68 KeyTrain Reading for Information Form W-4 (1998) Purpose. Complete Form W-4 so your employer can withhold the correct Federal income tax from your pay. Because your tax situation may change, you may want to refigure your withholding each year. Exemption from withholding. If you are exempt, complete only lines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7, and sign the form to validate it. Your exemption for 1998 expires February 16, 1999. Note: You cannot claim exemption from withholding if (1) your income exceeds $700 and includes unearned income (e.g., interest and dividends) and (2) another person can claim you as a dependent on their tax return. Basic instructions. If you are not exempt, complete the Personal Allowances Worksheet. The worksheets on page 2 adjust your withholding allowances based on itemized deductions, adjustment to income, or two-earner/two- Level 5 Applying Instructions job situations. Complete all worksheets that apply. They will help you figure the number of withholding allowances you are entitled to claim. However, you may claim fewer allowances. New—Child tax and higher education credits. For details on adjusting withholding for these and other credits, see Pub. 919, Is My Withholding correct for 1998? Head of household. Generally, you may claim head of household filing status on your tax return only if you are unmarried and pay more than 50% of the costs of keeping up a home for yourself and your dependent(s) or other qualifying individuals. Nonwage income. If you have a large amount of nonwage income, such as interest or dividends, you should consider making estimated tax payments using Form 1040-ES. Otherwise, you may owe additional tax. Two earners/two jobs. If you have a working spouse or more than one job, figure the total number of allowances you are entitled to claim on all jobs using worksheets from only one W-4. Your withholding will usually be most accurate when all allowances are claimed on the W-4 filed for the highest paying job and zero allowances are claimed for the others. Check your withholding. After your W-4 takes effect, use Pub. 919 to see how the dollar amount you are having withheld compares to your estimated total annual tax. Get Pub. 919 especially if you used the Two-Earner/Two-Job Worksheet and your earnings exceed $150,000 (Single) or $200,000 (Married). To order Pub. 919, call 1-800-829-3676. You can do this by breaking down the instructions into smaller pieces. Then you can understand and follow each piece one at a time. This is the way most complex jobs are done. Few people can manage all the details of a complex job at once. They actually break the job down into parts, and then complete the parts one by one. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. To choose the correct word for this blank think about why glasses are required in the first place. The paragraphs you are working with are from the New Employee Safety Manual. The requirement being discussed is a safety requirement. Technical Jargon Problem 2: The correct answer is B. Think about where you might need safety glasses. Would you need to protect your eyes in a gift shop, or a food shop or an accounting shop? Probably not, but you would need to protect your eyes in a machine shop. Technical Jargon Problem 3: The correct answer is D. What kind of eyewear starts with “contact” and does not provide eye protection? Contact lenses are a form of eyewear, but they do not provide any protection for the eyes. Technical Jargon Problem 4: Sloan Manufacturing will pay for standards eyeglasses frames. If you wish to upgrade to a more fashionable frame, you will be responsible for the additional cost, and it will be paid for through payroll deductions on your paycheck. Employees should pick up instructions for the doctor and authorization forms from the personnel department before going to the doctor. Technical Jargon Problem 5: The correct answer is A. The second sentence explains that “information anxiety elicits feelings of frustration.” The third sentence explains “we feel the effects of information anxiety when we look at the piles of papers, letters, memos, and reports on our desks, and we know we need to get through them.” From the context of the paragraph you can determine that the definition of information anxiety is a fearful emotion causes by the large numbers of documents around us. Technical Jargon Problem 6: The correct answer is D. The second sentence talks about feelings of frustration, ignorance and continuously being behind. The second to last sentence talks about not being able to find the information we need. The last sentence talks about a sinking feeling that we can’t sort through the data. Information anxiety includes all of these feelings. Copyright © 2000, SAI Interactive, Inc. For use only by KeyTrain licensed users. Page 79 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Technical Jargon - Answers Technical Jargon Problem 7: The correct answer is C. The second to last sentence says a stupor feels like you “can’t keep up” or “don’t know.” Answer C, “feeling ineffective and out of touch” most closely matches this description. Technical Jargon Problem 8: The correct answer is B. The paragraph talks about the “piles of papers, letters, memos, and reports on our desks” and then later about seeing “hundreds of current magazines and newspapers that we will never find time to read, . . . and see dozens of recently published books that we will never peruse.” Myriad of data is an endless amount of data. Technical Jargon Problem 9: The correct answer is C. The A Natural Element section of the article discusses that chlorine is found naturally in the Earth. The Unique Structure and Natural Abundance of Organochlorine Compounds sections discuss the many uses for chlorine. The main idea of the article is that chlorine is a natural and useful compound. It is true that chlorine is a common compound and that many animals use chlorine but neither of these alone conveys the main idea of the article. Technical Jargon Problem 10: The correct answer is D. Refer to the Unique Structure section of the article to answer this question. The first sentence states “Chlorine’s extraordinary role in the world is related to its ability to bind to other elements and compounds to form new compounds.” The last sentence explains that “This fact is also why chlorine is so useful in producing many man-made products. . .” Technical Jargon Problem 11: The correct answer is B. The last paragraph of the Natural Abundance of Organochlorine Compounds section of the article discusses animals that use chlorine compounds to survive. The last sentence gives an example of a frog in Ecuador that “. . . secretes a chlorinated alkaloid 500 times more powerful than morphine as a pain-killer.” From the context of the paragraph you can determine that chlorinated alkaloid is a chlorine-containing compound. Page 80 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Interpreting Information - Answers Interpreting Information – Answers Interpreting Information Problem 1: The correct answer is D. 24-hour television news channels are a result of the Information Age. Automobiles and jet air travel are the result of the Industrial Revolution. Telephones helped to cause the Information Age, not a result of it. Interpreting Information Problem 2: The correct answer is B. The paragraph is talking about changes and transformations to the way we live. Metamorphosis does describe a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, but that is not how metamorphosis is being used in this paragraph. Interpreting Information Problem 3: The correct answer is C. Banking by telephone, using the Internet and taking classes by computer are all news ways of handling information and are results of the Information Age. Increased drug abuse is NOT a result of the Information Age. Interpreting Information Problem 4: The correct answer is B. The first text line of the Employee Clothing Discount Memorandum states that “beginning April 18th. . .” employees will be eligible to purchase clothing at a discount. Do not be confused by the February 15, 1998 date, which is the date the memo was issued, and not the date that the employee discount becomes effective. Interpreting Information Problem 5: The correct answer is A. The end of the second paragraph states that: “This discount will be provided to the employee only and is available only at the time of purchase.” The next paragraph discusses exchanges: “ABC Clothing Company gladly offers exchanges when items are returned accompanied by a receipt.” You cannot get the discount amount refunded but you can exchange the jacket since you have the receipt. Interpreting Information Problem 6: The correct answer is B. You receive a discount of 1% for each year you have been employed by the company. There is also a minimum discount of 5%. This means that anyone who has worked less than 5 years will still get a 5% discount. You have worked for 4 years and 11 months and will therefore get the minimum discount of 5%. Page 81 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Interpreting Information - Answers Interpreting Information Problem 7: The correct answer is D. Section I, C., 2. States “The conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with the individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment. You find the vulgar language offensive and under this section it can be considered sexual harassment. Interpreting Information Problem 8: The correct answer is C. See Section II, the second paragraph, first sentence: “In the event the employee feels his/her complaint has not bee handled appropriately, the employee may address the matter is writing to the general manager.” Interpreting Information Problem 9: The correct answer is B. See Section II, the second paragraph, second sentence: “The general manager may or may not discuss the matter with the board of directors of Sloan Manufacturing.” Interpreting Information Problem 10: The correct answer is C. You do not want people to be afraid to report sexual harassment. Therefore the names of the people who report offenses should be kept private. (You must infer this from the information given.) Page 82 KeyTrain Reading for Information Level 5 Acronyms - Answers Acronyms – Answers Acronyms Problem 1: The correct answer is C. The fourth sentence gives you a hint, “When you hit the winter season, you might watch the NBA or the NHL.” There is another clue in the sixth sentence, “There are no common acronyms for baseball. . . .” You can eliminate answer A and B, as they refer to baseball. You can also eliminate answer D, because Handball is not a common spectator sport. That leaves you with the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. Acronyms Problem 2: The correct answer is D. You can again eliminate answers A and C because they refer to baseball, which has no common acronyms. You already know that NBA stand for National Basketball Association. It would seem odd to also have a new basketball association called the Western National Basketball Association. On the other hand it would make sense to have a new Women’s National Basketball Association starting in 1997. Women’s basketball has become more popular in recent years. Acronyms Problem 3: The correct answer is B. The sixth and seventh sentences give you clues to what these acronyms mean. The sixth states: “There are no common acronyms for baseball, but the game itself uses many.” And the seventh states: “You might talk about the ERA of the pitchers or the RBIs of the batter.” “Equal Rights Amendment” and “Equally Running Around” do not seem to refer to baseball.
