Eisenhower Intermediate School Fly-‐er February 9, 2015 Time is passing quickly as we are already in the middle of February. There are many exciting events coming up. Some will be highlighted in this Fly-‐er and others will be explained in up-‐ coming additions. PARCC testing is one of those topics that we will explain in the next week or two. We hope you can attend our EPSSO meeting tomorrow night! Ms. Sweet, our Information Technology instructor, will be discussing Internet safety and guidelines parents can implement. With the world of apps and the Internet changing constantly, I look forward to Ms. Sweet sharing with us some things to be aware of. It is my hope that you will join us in the library tomorrow night at 6:00! On-‐line yearbook orders are no longer available, but please read below about how you can still secure a yearbook this year. Ms. Stanton and our yearbook staff are hard at work on creating this year’s book. Yearbooks are generally distributed the last week of school. We hope you have a fantastic and safe week! Eisenhower’s First Annual Geography is a Success! Congratulations to the Geography Bee participants! 80 students competed for the chance to be named Eisenhower's Geography Bee Champion. After more than 14 rounds, the field was whittled down to the top 3 challengers. Congratulations to the third place winner 5th grader Caleb Bench, and our second place winner, 6th grader Ashtin Latta. A standing O goes out to our champion, 5th Grader Andrew Bisaillon! Andrew won the championship when he correctly identified the Yukon as being located in Canada! A very special thank you to Ms. Sweet for her hard work in coordinating this event and her vision on how to make this a great experience for students! Eisenhower Students Contribute to Frost Fest We are proud of many things here at Eisenhower. One of those things is the Art program that Mrs. Madson is developing here. She guides the students through several media during the quarter she spends with them. In addition, she is able to guide students to enhance their skills through several projects. The Oregon Schools Foundation is an excellent organization that is dedicated to supporting our children and district in many ways. The annual Frost Fest is a fundraiser that helps support many of the goals set forth by OSF. Eisenhower was asked to submit some artwork from students that could be auctioned for the benefit. Mrs. Madson worked in guiding students through their creative processes. The results were astounding! Here is what was created and auctioned off for several hundred dollars: 1. Watercolor Winter Birds -‐ Kaidon Woodbury, Sean O'Conner, Madison Campbell painted birds sitting on a snow covered tree branch with berries. 2. Melted Crayons -‐ Kadyn Miller, Zoie Myler, Bella Kennedy, Amber Smith melted crayons over snowflakes on a canvas to create a very colorful piece! 3. Quilled Snowflake -‐ Johnathan Flanagan and Clinton Dupler created snowflakes using quilling and attached them to a wintery watercolor background. Quilling is the art of rolled paper. 4. Winter Tree -‐ Sydney Nichols, Mallory Nelson, Erin Church (not pictured) took a drawing of a tree and painted beautiful colors in the background. There are three sections and each section is unique. It was truly awesome to see the reactions of Frost Fest attendees as they perused student artwork. Skill and teamwork, as you can see below, were definitely on display with these tremendous creations. Great job artists! I also wanted to share with you some information about the Oregon Schools Foundation. One of Oregon Schools Foundation’s goals is to inspire parents, businesses and community to participate with the school district by enriching and expanding its offerings beyond state minimums. The annual Frost Fest event held in January helps OSF to fund its goals. As Art remains in the curriculum for grades 5-‐12, it had to be eliminated in grades K-‐4 to reduce the budget. Through recently expanded core initiatives, the Oregon Schools Foundation will support expanding our afterschool art clubs in the three elementary buildings. We are thankful for the work of the Foundation and very proud of our students! Round Up and Rodeo Last year saw our first Round up and Rodeo here at Eisenhower! It was a great success as more than 125 students attended and were treated to a great time! This year’s event will be Friday, February 13th from 2:45—4:30. The cost for admission is $5.00 and the proceeds will be used to fund our Soaring Festival which is scheduled to occur the second to last day of school. Permission slips are required and we must have those returned by Thursday, February 12th. Below are photos from last year’s event. We hope your child can join us for this fun event that will feature a live band, line and square dancing, games, a photo booth, a snack and door prizes!
