Brent Carers’ Centre is taking part in one of the
greatest ever drives to reach out to carers in
Brent during Carers’ Week 2014. Carers’ Week
Quest is an exciting new initiative to reach
out to new and hidden carers. Our aim is to
reach out to 200 new carers in Brent who are
currently missing out on services and support.
One in eight of us are currently carers looking
after an ill, frail or disabled family member or
friend. Many people who are carers do not
immediately see themselves as carers, as they
are simply wives, husbands, sons, daughters,
mums, dads or perhaps grandparents, nieces or
nephews helping a loved one. However as carers
we all know they require additional support,
and without it the impact can be devastating
– carers can quickly become isolated, their
health and wellbeing may deteriorate, they may
not be able to hold down a job and they may
struggle financially. Our Carers’ Week Quest will
be a perfect platform to raise awareness of who
and what is a carer. We want to make clear the
distinction between a carer who is unpaid and
the role of a paid care worker.

Message from our Chief Executive
Brent Carers Centre strives
to continually improve
on the range of services
available to carers. So
we are very excited to be
initiating more new projects
which are needed by Carers.
You will see that we are now
undertaking Whole Family
Assessments, these provide a
fairly comprehensive analysis
of the needs of each family
member, ensuring that
relevant support services
Anne-Marie Morris
are identified, signposted or
Chief Executive
referred to each member as
required. We have set up several new outreach advice clinics
at different locations across the borough, designed to improve
the accessibility of our advice service to carers in Brent: full
details are on page 4. We are also pleased to be launching a
counselling provision for which Carers have expressed a need
on numerous occasions: for more details turn to page 12.
On page 4 you can read our ‘We Have Been Listening’ feature
which highlights the different ways that we have been able
to successfully respond to the ideas and suggestions we have
received from Carers. Brent Carers’ Centre is committed to
representing the views and issues of Carers borough-wide and
also to responding to those views where practicably possible.
As we look forward to hopefully a sunny summer season,
we are very excited to announce our plans for Carers’ Week
Quest, taking place from 9th – 15th June 2014. We have put
together a week of fun-packed activities, training and seminars
specifically for carers, which we hope you will find both
helpful and enjoyable. In addition we have a linked up with a
number of local partner agencies who will be working with us
to jointly identify our target of 200 carers during Carers’ Week
Quest. You can help too - by simply telling people about the
work we do. The biggest barrier for carers accessing support
is simply recognising that they are a carer. You could all help
by spreading the word – carers are everyday people like you
and me who provide unpaid care for a friend or relative who
cannot manage without our help! Invite them to one of our
Carers’ Week Events or simply tell them to call us. Together we
can make Carers’ Week Quest our biggest and most successful
drive to identify new and hidden Carers. We hope you enjoy
this edition of Caring Matters and welcome your views and
feedback. We look forward to seeing you at one of our Carers’
Week events, especially the Launch on 2nd June and the
Carers’ Summer Barbecue on 14th June.
Here’s hoping we have a wonderful summer,
happy reading!
Introducing Whole Family
Assessments for Carers
Brent Carers’ Centre has launched ‘Whole Family
Assessments’ for Carers and in particularly young
carers in Brent. A whole family assessment is a process
facilitated by a key worker where each member of the
family can identify their own needs and issues and explore
the interrelationship between family members. The
information obtained is then used to identify the relevant
services which would provide appropriate support to
meet the individual needs of each member of the family.
We know that Young Carers in particular may face problems
such as:
ww School or College Attendance
ww Homework or coursework
ww Their own well-being
ww Being bullied
ww Meeting or going out with friends
ww Talking about their caring role
Undertaking a whole family assessment ensures that a whole
family focused approach is used to support each member and
that each member’s views, needs and issues are taken into
consideration when planning support for the whole family –
this is widely known as the “Think Family” approach.
A whole family assessment can help each member to
understand the issues faced by the family and why existing
or previous support has been unsuccessful. Families with
complex needs may require support which cannot be
addressed by just one service so by completing an assessment
we can make sure that the right services are involved, and
ensure that members with acute needs are not prioritised at
the expense of other family members with lesser needs.
A whole family assessment will not replace a
carer’s assessment which is quite different, and
undertaking one will not result in funds being
assigned to the family. What it will do, however is to
link you with the right support services that will meet the
individual needs of each family member.
It may take 4 – 6 weeks to complete an assessment, looking
at the needs of each individual within the family as well as the
family as a whole. At the end of the assessment we will work
with you to prepare a Support / Action Plan, which means the
family have their say about what support is delivered to whom
and when, providing personalised support for individual
family members. Our Think Family approach can help the
whole family secure better outcomes for each individual as
well as for the family as a whole.
With the right support in place for you and your family, you
can enjoy a more fulfilling life and be better equipped to
achieve your goals.
To request a whole family assessment call us now on
020 8795 6240.

C A R E R S’ F O R U M
The Carers’ Forum which took place on 28th March 2014 was
well attended by 36 carers. Our guest speakers were Helen
Duncan Turnbull (Head of Support, Planning and Review
within Adult /Social Services) who described the process
of Carer’s Assessment, and Claire Small (NHS Brent Clinical
Commissioning Group) who introduced the New Integrated
Health Care plans.
Carers Assessments
Helen’s presentation highlighted the following points:
ww Carers who provide substantial care on a regular basis are
entitled to a Carer’s Assessment.
ww A Carer’s Assessment can take place in the home, the Civic
Centre or an agreed location.
ww Carers have a choice of completing the form on their own or with
the assistance of a social worker or Brent Carers’ Centre staff.
ww Carers’ Assessments can be undertaken annually or when
there is a change in your circumstances.
ww You do not need the dependent’s permission to be entitled to
a Carer’s Assessment.
ww If a carer meets the criteria of substantial care they may be
entitled to support from Brent Social Services.
ww Carers may receive up to £300 respite grant per year, which is
not means tested.
ww The respite grant is not issued annually; you need to request it.
New Integrated Health Care Plans
Claire’s presentation highlighted the following points:
ww Brent Social Services & NHS Brent Clinical Commissioning
Group will be pooling their resources to deliver a new
integrated approach to health care in Brent.
ww The approach is designed to reduce duplication and
streamline services in the borough to provide a seamless
approach to support.
ww It is proposed that there will be a single point of contact for
each individual to the range of services
and support in the borough.
Some concerns were by carers who care for someone with a
mental health condition regarding Care Plan Managers. Care
Plan Managers are currently the single point of contact for
those carers. Carers explained that problems have arisen as
the Care Plan Managers did not understand the needs of the
carers they were representing. It was suggested that this issue
should be reviewed first before rolling out a single point of
contact for individuals.

A Carer’s Profile Staney Rodrigues
Staney Rodrigues is the main carer for his son, Roshan.
Roshan is 21 years old and has Down ’s Syndrome. Staney
has been his main carer for eight years. Staney ensures
that Roshan’s life has routine and that his needs are met.
He gets him up in the morning, makes sure he has a wash, sets
his clothes out for him and checks he has everything he needs
for his college course – Roshan attends supported life skills
classes at the College of North West London. Roshan does
not understand the world around him and gets anxious and
worried. Staney accompanies him and supports him. “Roshan
gets bored easily so I try and take him out. He loves going to
the market and especially enjoys looking at the fish shop.”
The Rodrigues’ family life has been turned upside down as they
sought the best quality of life for their son. “I had a successful
business in Oman, but the attitude to disabled children there
is heart-breaking. Oman society does not see any value in
children with learning disabilities, they are seen as worse than
useless. Seeing other people’s attitude towards my son was like
torture to me. Another family who also had a child with Down’s
Syndrome around the same time as we did also felt they had no
choice but to leave Oman. They went to America.”
The Rodrigues family moved to the UK in 2006 and used their
savings in search of a better life here. Staney could not work
as he was now caring for his son full-time. His wife left a job
in Oman where she was PA to a director at a hospital, but she
could only find work here as a paid care worker. The family
have struggled financially. One of the worst times was when
Roshan didn’t have a Freedom Pass and it was very difficult
finding the money for his bus fare with no money coming in.
Staney went to Brent Council but felt that they didn’t care,
which he found very upsetting. However Roshan was assigned
a social worker who referred the family to Brent Carers’ Centre.
Brent Carers’ Centre helped Staney fill out a Carer’s Allowance
application which was successful. The extra income is an
immense relief. They also identified that Staney may be
entitled to Income Support and Roshan may be entitled to
Employment Support Allowance (ESA), and have since helped
Staney fill out the ESA application form as well.
Staney strongly feels that carers’ voices should be heard and
acted on. He feels that London Transport staff should be
given more training about how to help people with special
needs using public transport, following an incident when
Roshan’s travel pass wouldn’t register on a Bus’ Reader and he
was made to get off and had to walk 3km. Staney thinks that
London Transport staff should have the discretion to allow
people with special needs to stay on the bus / train when
something goes wrong as this is safer for them.
Staney’s advice to a new carer is:
“
Go to Brent Carers’ Centre and take
advice. They will guide and support you
through a very complicated system.

We Have Been Listening...
Brent Carers’ Centre has been holding numerous
consultation meetings and Carers’ Forums in a bid to hear
your concerns, frustrations and identify your needs.
What we have heard from you is that you are tired of being
asked the same questions year in year out and not seeing any
improvements. With the purse strings tightening and the
number of carers increasing each year, each with a range of
complex needs, we realise that providing the required range
of adequate support and resources is going to be a challenge.
We have been able to act on some of the suggestions given to
us and thought you would be interested in hearing about the
latest developments in response to your requests.
Your views and opinions are really important to us. Whilst
we cannot promise that we can always take up or respond
to every view and comment made to us, we can promise
that we will listen and wherever practically possible, we
will endeavour to adopt, modify or implement new ideas
and suggestions from carers that will be of benefit to carers
in Brent. We will also liaise with and communicate with
Brent Social Services, NHS Brent CCG and any other key
stakeholder in our bid to continually improve the range of
services and support available to carers in Brent. We hope
you can see the efforts we have been making in listening
and responding to your views and suggestions.
Questions Carers asked and our response
Q You would like more social activities and day trips for time
out respite & socialising.
We have now developed a quarterly programme of activities
and day trips for carers, with something taking place every
month. Your suggestions and ideas are welcomed and will
where possible be incorporated into the programme.
Q Why have the Mental Health Support Groups ended? They
were really helpful and very much needed.
We have reintroduced Mental Health Support Groups in
Wembley and Willesden facilitated by Brent Mind: see page 6.
Q You have asked for more training to improve your
knowledge and skills in your caring roles.
We have identified partners who specialise in a range of
training for carers and have put together a programme based
on your needs and requests.
Q You would like Brent Carers to set up a Credit Union for
Carers so that they can save and access cash when needed.
Brent Carers’ Centre is unable to provide a financial regulated
service such as a Credit Union. However we have identified a
Credit Union available in Brent which carers can join: please
see page 11.
Q You need access to more respite grants so you can take
time out when things get too difficult or stressful.
We have worked on identifying more respite grants for carers
and have been assisting more and more carers in accessing
respite grant funding.
Q Brent Carers’ Centre should have a counselling service so
that we can access emotional support when we need it.
We have been able to secure additional funding to launch a
Carers’ Counselling Service, particularly for Carers who care
for someone with mental health condition, but available to all
carers: see page 12 for details.
Q Carers who care for someone with a mental health
condition endure costly travel expenses as they support
their dependents to numerous medical appointments.
Reimbursement of travel expenses would be helpful.
We have negotiated with Brent Council and have succeeded in
securing a small grant to help cover the cost of travel expenses
for carers. Please turn to page 12 for further details.
Q You would like more opportunities for volunteering and
support into employment.
We have reviewed and improved our Volunteers Programme,
which will now be supported by a designated worker. We have
also developed partnerships with employment and career
advice agencies to support carers into employment.
Q Why don’t you have a support group for Carers who care
for someone with a learning disability, we think one is
needed.
On 24th June 2014 we will be launching a new Carers’ Support
Group for carers of someone with a learning disability: details
on page 6.
First Aid Training Day
On 21st March, Brent Carers’ Centre held a Basic First Aid
course at the Wembley Centre for Health and Care.
The carers who attended learnt basic first aid skills and how
to respond to emergencies. They gained an understanding of
what to do if someone is unconscious and practised the CPR
technique. They were taught how to treat burns and cuts, and
to identify symptoms of a stroke and many other emergency
situations.
Carers gained a 3 year certificate as a qualified basic First
Aider, but most importantly knowledge of what to do if an
emergency arises in their caring role.
The next course will be held in June, with future courses
later in the year. Once again, places are limited so please call
quickly to book a place.
Raksha Hirani, a carer who attended, said,
“
I really enjoyed the course and found it very
knowledgable. It was very helpful in my caring
role.

Anne Cover is a committed volunteer for Afasic and supports
carers who care for children with learning disabilities; we
asked Anne the following questions:
Q What will be the purpose of the Learning Disabilities
Carers Support Group?
My role is to facilitate, and plan and organise the time table for
the support group. I will be responsible for planning the outline
of each session to parents know what to expect when they arrive.
Q What will the Learning Disabilities Carers Support Group offer?
This support group will offer Information, support, befriending, access to training and workshops relevant to carer, we
may also have guest speakers who may give presentations on
a range of issues as identified by the carers attending.
Q What type of carers will attend?
This support group is designed for anyone who looks after
someone with a learning disability, however minimal or severe
the disability may be.
Q What makes a good support group?
The skill of the facilitator is very important, the group needs
someone who can easily engage with the parents, provide an
enjoyable and stimulating support group which encourages
the participation of everyone attending.
Q Why join this support?
You will always get something from each session, learning
something useful each week. It is important to empower
carers to be involved and help shape the support group so
they will feel a part of it. Carers may come for a break from
their chaotic and challenging lives to be amongst people
who understand what they’re going through and able to and
quality time for you too.

A new app for carers to help you
in your caring role
Jointly is an app developed by
Carers UK that makes
caring for someone
a little easier, less
stressful and a lot more
organised by making
communication and
coordination between
those who share the
care as easy as a text
message! Jointly works
by enabling people to
set up circles of care.
A Jointly circle costs
£2.99. Once you have
purchased it and set up
a Jointly circle, you can
invite as many people as
you want to share in the
care of your loved one.
Jointly has been
designed in consultation with carers and brings together key
features such as group messaging, profile and contacts pages,
task allocation and calendaring and a dedicated medications
list in a single tool.
We’re giving away 50 Jointly apps for FREE!
Brent Carers’ Centre will be giving away 50 Jointly apps
to fifty lucky readers, randomly selected from a draw at
our Carers’ Summer Barbecue on 14th June 2014.

Personal Independence Payment
Margaret Champney Fund
Part of the Ogilvie Charities, the Margaret Champney Rest
& Holiday Fund provides funds for rest and recuperative
holidays.
All carers are eligible to apply, particularly those caring for a
severely disabled relative, who needs a break away from the
person they are caring for. Occasionally, grants may be made
to couples or adult family members where one is the primary
carer for the other and they wish to holiday together.
The grant is generally a one-off grant of between £200 and £300.
The grants are not available towards ‘normal’ family holidays.
Personal Independence Payment, commonly known as
PIP, is the new benefit that replaced Disability Living
Allowance (DLA) from April 2013. Anybody over 16 who
wants to apply for DLA now has to apply for PIP. You can
still claim DLA in respect of children under 16 years of age.
PIP is based on an assessment of the individual’s needs rather
than the impairment. Unlike the DLA criteria, PIP assessments
will look at how the claimant’s disability / condition affects
their daily living, looking at their ability to carry out a range of
everyday activities.
As part of the application process most people will be asked
to attend a face-to-face consultation with an independent
health professional, where they will be asked questions about
their circumstances, health condition or disability and how
theses affect their everyday life
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) are introducing
PIP in stages over the next few years. From October 2015
existing claimants will be contacted, inviting them to claim
PIP. The DWP will write in plenty of time so there is no need to
contact them now.
If you would like more information or to better understand
PIP telephone us to book your place on our course
‘Understanding Personal Independence Payments’
on Monday 15th September 2014.
Disability Grants
Are you a carer? Do you have a disability? Trying to find
funding for a holiday, equipment, housing needs or days
out may sometimes seems impossible. But there are
organisations and charities that may be able to help.
Disability Grants provides grant information on charities or
trusts, locally or nationally, that could help you find a grant for
yourself, your family or anyone you may be supporting who
has a disability.
Discover what is available in your area by searching the
individual sections. For more information visit
www.disability-grants.org
If you need any more information or help filling out an
application form, telephone us on 020 8795 6240.
Please note as part of the application you will need to provide
a brief summary of your circumstances. This will also include
details of weekly income and expenditure, details of other
agencies being approached for funding, who will care for
the person while the break is being taken and the proposed
holiday venue, date and likely costs.
If you wish to apply please contact Brent Carers Centre on
020 8795 6240, and a member of our team will make an
application on your behalf.
Credit Union – My Community Bank
As a carer, your finances are often
stretched to the limits with little left over
for savings. However a local credit union
could be the answer you are looking for to
help plan for the future.
My Community Bank has grown out of a credit union called
Brent Shrine Credit Union which was first formed in 1979 to
serve people living or working in the London Borough of Brent.
Your eligible deposits with My Community Bank are
protected up to a total of £85,000 by the Financial
Services Compensation Scheme, the UK’s deposit
protection scheme.
My Community Bank is
ww Owned and controlled by its members
ww It has no external shareholders taking profits
ww Attractive savings rates
ww Offer fair and reasonable loans
The loans are designed for those who may struggle to get a
loan from a high street bank, but who still have a fair credit
profile. This means that you may have missed or been late
with recent repayments, moved jobs or home frequently. You
might live with your parents or carry a fairly high level of debt.
If you can afford the repayments they will try and qualify you
for a loan.

Travel Costs Reimbursement Fund
Coming Soon – A Carers’
Counselling Service
Brent Carers Centre is setting up a new counselling
provision for Carers in Brent. We will shortly be
appointing a team of experienced counsellors to offer
one to one emotional support to carers. The service is
being launched specifically to support carers who care
for someone with a mental health condition, however
appointments will be available to other carers too!
Brent Carers’ Centre is pleased to launch the Travel
Costs Reimbursement Fund for Carers of Mental Health
Dependents
This is a new fund for carers who care for someone with a
mental health condition. We know that carers who care for
someone with a mental health condition may have a lot of
medical appointments to attend with their dependent, which
can entail significant costs. This fund is designed to alleviate
some of the high travel expenses incurred by carers.
To claim reimbursement of travel expenses you must:
1. Be registered with Brent Carers’ Centre as a Carer
of someone with a mental health condition, such as
clinical depression, bi-polar, dementia etc.
Our Carers’ Counselling Service will provide a confidential
space for you to talk about any struggles or challenges,
overwhelming experiences, setbacks or difficulties you are
encountering in your caring role as well as other issues. With
counselling you can be supported to understand any conflicts
you may have and explore whatever options, choices, or
personal goals you may have. Counselling can offer different
perspectives, feedback or guidance, and opportunities to
develop a greater understanding of who you are and to make
sense of your life. Counselling looks in depth not only at the
symptoms, but also at your core issues, the causes, and what
these might mean for you.
Some of the issues counselling can help you with:
ww Adjusting to being a Carer
ww Anger
ww Bereavement
ww Changes & transitions
2. Provide written proof on letterhead for each of your
medical appointments for your dependent.
ww The challenges of caring for someone with a mental
health condition
3. Provide original receipts of travel expenses.
ww Confidence & self esteem
Travel expenses will be administered on a monthly basis. Each
carer can claim up to £10 per trip maximum and up to 10 trips
per annum, subject to availability of funds. Payments will be
allocated on a first come first served basis.
ww Control issues
To claim reimbursement of travel expenses, call our office on
020 8795 6240 and ask for a Mental Health Travel Expenses
Claim form.
ww Coping with change, moving on, feeling empty
ww Depression
ww Difficult or overwhelming feelings emotional
repression
ww Guilt or resentment of your loved ones
ww Isolation or loneliness
ww Relationships
ww Stress

GP’s and Sharing Patient
Information – You Have a choice!
Health Checks
Carers are known to suffer ill health that is directly
linked to their caring responsibilities. Physical injuries,
especially back injuries, due to lifting and moving are
common. However, the main health risks come from the
worry, anxiety, lack of sleep, exhaustion and depression
that caring may bring. Also, carers often have to fight and
battle for the support they get. All this can lead to high
blood pressure and stress related illness.
It is important that you visit your doctor regularly, and that
you and your doctor have a clear picture of your health. It
is also important that your GP knows you are a carer and
understands the impact of caring on your health.
You may have already heard that GP’s and NHS
organisations are planning to share information about the
care you have received as a patient with those who plan
health and social care services, as well as with approved
researchers and organisations outside the NHS, if this will
benefit patient care.
As a patient, you may receive care and treatment from a
number of places such as your GP practice, hospitals and
community services. By bringing this information together
from all the different places they can compare the care
provided in one area with the care provided in another, so that
they can see what worked best.
They will use information such as your postcode and NHS
number to link your records from these different places. Records
are linked in a secure system so your identity is protected.
Details that could identify you will be removed before
your information is made available to others, such as those
planning NHS services and approved researchers.
It is very important to note that your data will
be uploaded for sharing unless you opt out by
informing your GP.
If you are happy for your information to be shared you do not
need to do anything. There is no form to fill in and nothing to
sign. And you can change your mind at any time.
You may be worried that identifiable data may be misused.
If you do not want information about you to be shared
outside your GP practice, please ask the practice to make
a note of this in your medical record. This note will prevent
your confidential information from being used other than in
special circumstances. Information from other places where
you receive care, such as hospitals and community services,
is collected nationally. You should also let your GP practice
know if you want to prevent the information from those
places being shared.
Some GP practices offer Health Checks for carers. If your
practice is not one of them, you could still benefit from other
health programmes provided by the NHS. Everyone between
the ages of 40 and 74 is invited (once every five years) to have
a health check. It aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke,
diabetes, kidney disease and certain types of dementia. If you
have not had a health check within the last year please ask at
your GP’s surgery.
The NHS offers free Flu Vaccination to carers. It is recognised
that due to caring 24/7, stress and exhaustion, carers’ immune
systems might be weakened. Therefore, free flu vaccination is
one way to maintain a carer’s health.
It is important to have a good open relationship with your
doctor. Tell your GP that you are in a caring role. GP practices
have systems in place to record this information on a Carers
Register. This information is beneficial to both you and the
GP practice. For example, a GP practice might use its Carers
Register to invite carers for a flu vaccination or a health check.
On the other hand, carers know the people that they care for
better than anyone else. This knowledge can be extremely
useful in planning patient care, and also in identifying
problems that may require intervention.
Staying healthy is important for everyone, but especially
important for carers. If you feel that your caring
responsibilities are starting to have a negative impact on your
health, seek help. You might benefit from extra support with
caring tasks, respite service, counselling, training or emotional
support.
Brent Carers’ Centre has a draft letter template Carers may
use to opt out of sharing your data. If you would like to use it,
please call or email us to request a copy.
There is an information line open Monday to Friday 8am –
8pm and on Saturdays from 9am – 3pm Call 0300 456 3531.
A text phone service is also available on 020 8742 8620.

Benefits for Young People
A Young Carers profile
There is a whole range of benefits which young people can
claim but are unaware of their entitlements.
Did you know?
Depending on your situation, you may be entitled to
claim Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support, Housing or
Council Tax Benefit.
If you are between the ages of 16-19 years old and estranged
from your family or parents, you could be entitled to income
support if you are in full time education.
In addition to this if you have a successful claim for income
support then you will be eligible to receive a full bursary.
At the age of 16 you could be entitled to Carers Allowance
if you care for someone who receives Disability Living
Allowance, Attendance Allowance or Personal Independence
Payments and not in education for more than 12 hours.
To find out more about benefit entitlement for young carers,
call our Young Carers Support Team on 020 8795 6240
Young Carers go Horse Riding
On 11th April our staff took a group of young carers horse
riding. They learnt how to look after, feed and groom horses,
and spent the afternoon learning to ride them. It was a new
experience for all the young carers who attended, which they
all thoroughly enjoyed.
Preety is an 18 year old teenager who has been a young
carer for 11 years. I became a carer from the age of seven
and caring my brother who is 11 and has several medical
conditions as well as a learning disability. I spend a lot of
time advocating for my brother and interpreting for my
mum, who speaks very little English.
Each week I attend school, but I have the added worry that
if the transport that takes my brother to school, does not
come on time then I have to make calls and communicate on
his behalf. I need to be organised for myself and my brother
because he may need to go on a school trip and I need to
support my mum to ensure all his needs met.
Because my brother also has medical appointments, I have
to attend to support my mum, which means that I may miss
school and have to catch up on my school work and homework.
It has been difficult to switch off and be a normal teenager as
I have the responsibilities that other young people of my age
do not have. It’s also difficult to trust other young people and
open up about the problems I have to cope with and face.
The role as a carer will always impact upon my life as I have to
make my decisions with my brother and mum in mind at all
times. An example of this is I cannot board away from home
for university, as my mum would struggle to cope without my
support for my brother.
The support I have received from Brent carers, is meeting
up with other young carers, having day trips out, attending
activities, and going to support groups. I may even be lucky
enough to receive a grant towards driving lessons.
Brent young carers learning how to groom horses
I have found Brent carers so helpful to me, as they are able
to give advice a guidance, and I have found this to be a
wonderful outlet, to have time for me.
My advice for other young carers “
is you are not alone.
”
I think the support already on offer for Carers and young
carers is already very good, for example Brent Carers are
providing a day trip to St Leonards at the end of May and as
a family we are all able to attend, including my brother this
will be a really nice day out, that all of us can treasure. Brent
carers is very important because we get to find out what is
out there and offer for the carer and the young carers. I feel at
ease knowing that there is some form of support out there for
people like myself. (Names have been changed for anonymity)
