Learning Intention: To write a set of instructions - including safety and top tips for added impact!
Writing Instructions
‘Cheat Sheet’
Purpose: To write a set of instructions on how to make a biscuit.
Audience: YOU and your peers.
Instructions tell someone HOW to do something. Use these Key Features to help you
set your instructions out properly…
KEY FEATURES

Begin with a brief explanation of what the instructions are for and why you should
follow them (e.g. follow these instructions to make the most delicious biscuits… you
will have lovely tasting biscuits to share with your friends).

List all the ingredients and equipment you will need (these can be in separate boxes
if you wish).

Numbered or bulleted points – sequence each individual step in order. You don’t need
to use connectives such as ‘first, second, finally etc…’

Use imperative verbs to begin each step. Imperative Verbs are also known as ‘bossy
verbs’- they tell people what to do! e.g. close the door; empty the bin; eat your
dinner!

Include any safety, hygiene or ‘top tips’ to help the reader.

Diagrams can often be helpful to help explain or show a difficult step. You may not
need them for making biscuits unless it is to show equipment that may be unfamiliar
or a special way to want to decorate your biscuit. Pictures are a good way to show
the finished product.

a lightly floured surface. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap (cling wrap or glad wrap)
then refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm.
