As you leave the flat area, you can see the remains of the Tinsley house to your left. The chimney still stands. At an earlier time this area was quite populated and there are many remains of old dwellings. The cemetery is among large trees and the area is clear of vegetation. Drive approximately 14 miles west, through Elon and Agricola, to a left turn on Waughs Ferry Rd (647). Follow Waughs Ferry Rd three miles to the James River and bear left at the fork, go through the gate, taking the second gravel road to the left. You will pass the Gibbs’ residence, then continue up the hill on a farm path into the trees behind the house. The cemetery is on higher ground behind the house in a clearing on the left. A few graves are marked by fieldstones. A Gibbs memorial stone is also placed here. Dr. Phillip Gibbs is buried there. Maintained. The property was once owned by Cornelius Thomas, then Roderick McCulloch and the Waugh family. Waughs Ferry was nearby. Verdant Vale was the name of McCulloch’s plantation. Note: The purpose of this entry is to correct data in the referenced edition and to combine two cemeteries, Verdant Vale and Waugh on the James, which are the same graveyards. Furthermore, as stated in the reference edition, Roderick McCulloch was not a minister and did not baptize George Washington. Watts on Burley Hollow Road Location: US 60 W to Burley Hollow Road (615) on the left. Turn left and go to the end of Burley Hollow Road where there is a cul-de-sac. As you enter the cul-de-sac there is a gated trail on the left. Go around the gate and walk down the trail for about ¼ mile. Look to the right side of the trail through a loose wire fence. The 4 fieldstone graves are about 40 feet off the road in sparse trees. There are no inscribed stone – just four upstanding field stones. This is a very old site. Not maintained. According to Billy Jennings, this a Watts cemetery. He remembers Mrs. Susie Shrader Burley (1st husband- Peyton Burley) Gains (1897-1989), the sister of Judge Lucian Shrader, telling him about this cemetery. The Watts were early owners of this tract of land up to 1850 when it was sold to Wash Burley. Pettit Watts at this site, even after having been informed that the land was documented as Camdens; the Watts’ land being nearby. (There was Watts property near the next road, Burley Hollow Road, and there is evidence of burials there. See entry for Watts on Burley Hollow Road.)
