The three major groups that affected the Trustee period in Georgia Salzburgers Arrived to Georgia in __1734________. They were expelled from Germany for not being Catholic. They were __Protestants_____ who wanted religious freedom. Created the town of _Ebenezer____, but was too swampy to survive. Relocated to the town of New Ebenezer along _Savannah_ River and it became a very religious. Trustees liked them because they were __hard___ workers. They did not like __alcohol___ or _slavery_ which were rules the colonists had to live by. Very successful __farmers___ Highland Scots Came to Georgia in _1736_. They were from _Scotland_. Built the town / fort of __Darien__ south of Savannah along the Altamaha River Reputation of hard working people who were good __soldiers__. Protected the Georgia colony from Spanish Florida – helped Oglethorpe push the __Spanish___ out of Georgia in the Battle of Bloody Marsh Changed from farming to__cattle__ raising and harvesting _timber__ Opposed slavery in the colony Malcontents Complained against the leadership of Oglethorpe. Land Problems – poor soil to grow __mulberry____ trees. Slavery – Many of the crops were labor-intensive. They wanted _slaves_ like S.C. Rum – _Rum_ was cheap to buy and could be traded as well. They wanted to be able to drink. By 1740 some of the loudest malcontents fled to South Carolina. The discontent did not go away.
