With enough food for a small country, great songs from Robynn Creitz, and gifts exchanged ranging from Starbucks cards to a black teddy bear members had a grand time. Perhaps one of the most important parts of the evening were the annual awards, each given by Prez Jon Simle to one greatly deserving of the recognition bestowed. 1 Officers First up, to a man who has not only become one of the best tiers in the club (in SoCal?) but has been instrumental in leading the monthly tying class and promoting this important aspect of the sport whenever he can, the club’s 2017 Fly-Tying Trophy went Barry Weber. And lastly, for her outstanding work for the club over the proceeding months - Connie Bullock took home the 2017 SCCC Outstanding Service Award always giving of her time and talent with consummate grace and ease to our club and to the Southwest Council. If you missed this one, you missed a good one. Here’s to a great 2017! 2 “True leadership requires a willingness to serve others.” This simple, but insightful, quote from a book I am reading entitled The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace (Gary Chapman and Paul White) got me thinking recently about our club and its leadership team. While our club’s mission is “To bring together people of all ages who share a passion to develop their knowledge and skills in the wonderful sport of fly fishing, through education, conservation, and fishing events, while serving as a proud steward of our community, our local waters and wildlife areas,” to fulfill that mission, we need people willing to work without financial compensation and who put the welfare of others before their own welfare. I believe that that attitude permeates our leadership and every aspect of this club. Countless hours are spent by the leadership team volunteers coordinating meetings, speakers, fly tying classes, casting clinics, barbeques, parties, outings, raffles, and the various demonstrations and presentations that we, as members, benefit from. One of the management principles discussed in the Chapman/White book is summarized as follows: “Collegiality in the workplace (or in any organization)—helping one’s team (substitute “club members”)—leads to more successful organizations.” The authors go on to observe that the idea of serving someone in the world of work is practically a foreign concept nowadays. Everyone is so focused on their individual tasks and “getting ahead” that sacrificing or being inconvenienced for others is simply not a concern. That being the case, we are privileged to be part of a club where every board meeting has as its underlying theme “What can we do to make this club better? And how can we best meet the needs of the membership?” And the answers to those questions most often require time to be spent by one or more volunteers. 3 Having said that, it can also get pretty lonely at the top. Leadership has its price; effective leadership isn’t for cowards. Our president, Jon Simle, works tirelessly (with lots of help from his friends on the board) to bring creativity, enthusiasm, balance, innovation, organization, and just plain old fun to this club’s activities. Taking a cue from the book’s title The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, would you—the next time you see Jon, Roger Knudson, Connie Bullock, Judy McLean, Dick Harris, Aran Dokovna, Chris Taylor, Paul Riegert, Barry Weber, John Parmenter, Chris Holm, Ben Franken, or Greg LaPolla—thank them for what they do to make our Santa Clarita Casting Club such a success. Without the efforts and sacrifice of these members, our club would not be nearly the success it is. And while I’m not a big proponent of making New Year’s resolutions (I always seem to cancel my new gym membership around March every year), I am going to resolve to thank those from whom I benefit more often in recognition of the fact that putting others first, of necessity, means putting yourself last. Happy New Year. You are greatly appreciated. *Editor’s note: Our Membership Chairman seems to have forgotten to mention (by choice, I’m sure), the contributions he has made and continues to make for our club. So a shout-out and a much deserved “Thank You” to Bill Creitz as well! Outings Report Chris Taylor **Editor’s note: I received an email from Chris Taylor who’s been busy planning club outings. If interested in any or all of the tentative outings, be sure to stay in touch with Chris or Roger Knutson for details. A trip to the "O" is planned the last weekend of February, but that is tentative according to weather, and talking to Jon this morning. I’ve been talking to Jon and Roger about our May Utah trip. No specific date has been established, but a timeline is being looked at for mid May or the week after Memorial Day. 4 Also, another trip to Utah is scheduled for the 2nd week of July to fish for big cutthroats. It will be float tubing only using #10-#12 Goddard Caddis and Parachute Caddis dry fly patterns. Cutthroats from 18"-24" have been landed. Another trip is being looked at for yours truly to guide on the San Juan River, NM, possibly in the fall. It’s a trip to consider if you like landing 18"-28" rainbows. Contact Roger or me. Also, we are due for our yearly float tube order from Outcast Float Tubes. The discount is substantial at about 40% off, with no tax but shipping is added. Only 2 tubes are allowed per year to the club, so first come, first served! Some of our more stalwart members have been fishing despite the rain and wind we’ve been experiencing this winter. In mid December while some of us were hunkered down at home or like your editor--still in bed-members Ben Franken, Rudy Archiega, Roger Knutsen, and Barry Weber were climbing into their chest high waders and launching their float tubes/floatation devices up at Pyramid Lake. Stripers were on the prowl and the flies used were Larry’s minnows, many tied at an earlier club fly tying session. What could be better? Fish counts for the day were Barry with 4, Ben and Roger with a few each, and Rudy with a long distance release. Reports are that all had a great time! 5 6 Connie Bullock Updated Fly Tying Schedule for 2017 The monthly Fly Tying Classes is moving to a new venue, Green Briar Estates East at 21425 Soledad Canyon Road, Valencia, CA 91354 from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM on the second Thursday of each month throughout 2017. It's one of the biggest fishing/tackle shows in the country and we have an opportunity to participate in this event. Even thought it's held in Long Beach, it brings in people from all over the country and is great exposure for our club and promotes new membership. Please let Connie Bullock know if you can help out one of the days of the show. Thank you. Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers is offering a Fly Fishing Class in March. The classes this year will be better than ever at the new location in Reseda Park with an LA River class and graduation in Bishop. We are charging a nominal fee of $40 (repeating Club students $20) and children under 18 are free. Word of mouth from the Club has always been our best advertising so please do your best to round up students.
