Do not publically announce your candidacy. No open facebook groups or street campaigning. You can tell friends and plan your campaign. • March 2nd - Voting opens at 10am • March 3rd – Voting closes at 7pm • March 3rd – Results Night from 8pm, The Quad. • - Launch Event, 6.30pm, The Underground. -Candidates Breakfast - Tea, coffee and biscuits will be made available from the Sabbs meeting room every morning between Tuesday and Thursday. TRAINING TEMPLATE Lent Term Elections 2011 Election Timetable Posters and Flyers This can make a huge difference for getting students to know who you are and getting them to vote. (From what I’ve seen it’s the most important thing!) Lent Term TRAINING TEMPLATE • • Don’t just hand out leaflets – try to engage students. • Be respectful and considerate. • Be creative to get students’ attention! In the past, students have used everything from costumes and balloons to blow-up dolls and candy. TRAININGLent TEMPLATE Term Elections 2011 • Anytime after 2pm Thursday, you can be out on Houghton Street, in front of the library, in front of the NAB, etc. Elections 2011 Street Campaigning Hustings You can not: •Exceed the allocated budget limit • Act in an anonymous capacity, or pose as another person • Use an already existing email list Lent Term Elections 2011 TRAININGLent TEMPLATE Term You can: •Use any website – twitter, facebook, youtube. •Email societies and sports teams to request endorsements •Email your friends TRAINING TEMPLATE Elections 2011 Online Campaigning • Thursday, Feb 24th: •Sabb Candidates: UGM: 1pm in the Old Theatre, with one minute speeches followed by a Q&A session else: 2-4pm in the Quad, with one-minute speeches, followed by a Q&A session. •Get friends to come along! •Everyone - Some societies/halls are holding hustings, see handout. - Be on the lookout for invitations in your inbox. - If you want to practice speeches come into the ARC tomorrow afternoon. • • • Word limits: •Sabbatical positions- 200 words •Other positions – 150 words • The election system does not accept formatting, so make use of (1), CAPS, --, **, etc for organization. Please submit your manifesto by 11:59pm tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd February. Fairness 4. Transparency 5. Competitiveness If you want to do something out of the box, go for it! Election guidelines and rules change every year. Just make sure it doesn’t conflict with these principles. If you’re unsure, just ask for clarification. • 400 - A4 – Contested Sabb 200 – All other positions • Paper allowance will only be for black and white printing. • “Candidates and campaigners may not use paper other than that issued by the Returning Officer or their delegate”. • “If all candidates in that particular election agree, candidates are able to have a paper-free election, whereby paper allowances for that election are zero”. • All printing must be done in the ARC and in black and white. Budgets Lent Term Elections 2011 Lent Term Elections 2011 Paper Allowance • • • • Election campaigns cost money to run. Submit receipts to the Returning Officer before 12pm on March 3rd. Any non paper publicity comes out of your campaign budget – the public price. Costs incurred by your campaigners are covered by this limit too. • • • • Sabbatical positions up to £40 Part Time Officer up to £25 Candidates for all other positions up to £15 Home printed/designed t shirts have a notional value of £2 per t shirt • ‘Free’ campaign materials widely available for free to students from the ARC: cardboard, wood, paint, adhesives, chalk, pens and pencils only. • Any questions, ask the Returning Officer before you purchase (and use) something for your campaign. Campaigning Rules But if your mum owns Cadbury’s you can’t give out free chocs because she gave them to you. You would be charged for each bar of chocolate at the price they would be available to everyone else. Elections 2011 You can make banners from cardboard boxes and paint = YES • After campaigning begins on Thursday at 2pm, you can wear stickers, badges, or t-shirts anywhere on campus. Lecture shout outs + leaflet in your class. Do not campaign in School Buildings generally or wear campaign t-shirts in the Library. • On voting days campaigning is not allowed in computer rooms (including the Library.) • • However, it’s fine to walk to attend classes while wearing tshirts. TRAININGLent TEMPLATE Term Lent Term Elections 2011 FOR EXAMPLE • Negative campaigning is not allowed. This is defined as attacking the character or personality of other person, implication by association or anything related to someone’s private life. You CAN use positions taken at UGMs, in The Beaver or during the campaign. • Music can not be played on Houghton Street. • If you do want to do a distributive “stunt” email John Bloomfield, LSE SU Head of Operations on [email protected] Elections 2011 • Societies/clubs can endorse. • Media group & RAG can’t. • All members of that society or club, and the Democracy Committee, must be informed. • Requirement – a vote of the existing Committee in an open meeting that members can attend. • Published on the website. • Once an endorsement is made the club/society can send an email around all its members officially endorsing the candidate. How to Complain TRAININGLent TEMPLATE Term Lent Term Elections 2011 Endorsements Formal complaints: Please email [email protected] with a description of the infringement and photos (if applicable). • • We will investigate the complaint, and respond within 24 hours. • Sanctions that may be applied: reduction in paper allowance, reduced budget, restrictions on internet and street campaigning.
