Welcometothenewschoolyear!ThisCommunityHandbookismeanttoserveasaguidetounderstand
theexpectationsforallStoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolcommunitymembers.Pleasereadthroughit

Theinformationcontainedhereinwilltellyoueverythingyouneedtoknowaboutexpectations,rules
andpolicies,clubsandorganizationswithintheschool(inwhichyoumightliketoparticipate),academic
policies,andcommunitylifeasbothboardinganddaystudents.IfyouarenewtotheSchool,this
documentmayseemabitoverwhelming.Overtime,however,itshouldprovehelpfulasawaytolook
upwhatseemsconfusing,reviewparticularrules,andquicklyfindcontactinformationyouneed.
Asyouknow,partofourmissionisto“inspiregirlstoleadmeaningfullivesbasedonhonor,respectand
intellectualcuriosity.”Wetakethischallengeseriouslyandexpectallourstudentstoworkwithus
towardthisgoal.Tothatend,itisimportanttogetinvolved,tochallengeyourselvestotakeappropriate
risksinandoutoftheclassroom,andtorememberthateverydecisionyoumakeaffectsthosearound
you.Ifwelivehonorablyandrespecteachotherashumanbeings,wecanlearnmuchfromoneanother.
Ifweremainintellectuallycurious,wewillbeengagedinourlearningandhelpotherstodothesame.Of
course,theinspiringpartisourresponsibilityasaschool.Ifyouengage,youwillbeinspiredbythemany
opportunitiesthatexisthereforhardwork,friendship,service,communityinvolvementandphysical

WeareaveryluckygroupofpeopletohavethisschoolcalledStoneleigh-Burnhaminourlives.The

Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchooldoesnotdiscriminateonthebasisofrace,color,religion,sexual

TheHistoryofStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool
In1968,twoMassachusettsgirls'schools,Stoneleigh-ProspectHillSchoolofGreenfield
andtheMaryA.BurnhamSchoolofNorthampton,mergedandbecameStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool.
Themergerbroughttogethertworichhistoriesthatsharedoneinspiration:“toprovideyoungwomen
withthesameeducationalopportunitiesaffordedtoyoungmenandtoprepareyoungwomenfor
college."Thiscommitmenttogirls'educationisattherootofallthatwedoatStoneleigh-Burnham
School.Wehonorourhistorythroughschooltraditionsandconstantachievement,andweweavethat
richhistoryintothefabricofeverygirl'sexperiencehere,makingeachstudentawareofherplaceinthe
broaderhistoryofthiswonderfulSchool.
Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolistheproductoffivefoundingschools,allcommittedtoeducatingyoung
womenandpreparingthemforcollege.Thetimelinebelowdemonstrateshowandwhentheseriesof
mergershappened,ultimatelyresultinginthe1968mergerthatproducedStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool.

1877–TheClassicalSchoolforGirlsisfoundedinNorthampton,Massachusettsby BessieTalbotCapen
andMaryA.Burnham.ThefoundersareencouragedbythenPresidentofSmithCollege,Laurenus
ClarkeSeelye,toprovideyoungwomenwithabetterpreparationforentranceintoSmithCollege.
1885–TheClassicalSchoolforGirlsisrenamedtheMaryA.BurnhamSchool,inhonoroffounderMary
A.Burnham.
1909–TheElmhurstSchoolisfoundedinConnersville,IndianabyIsabelCresslerandCarolineSumner,

Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolTraditions
TraditionsareabigpartoflifeatStoneleigh-Burnham.Whilesomeofthefollowingtraditionshavebeen
apartofStoneleigh-Burnhamlifeforoverahundredyears,othersaremorerecent,generatedby
studentswhoseideasandeffortswillbehandeddowntothosewhoenterStoneleigh-Burnhaminfuture
years.HerearesomeofthetraditionsthatmakelifeatStoneleigh-Burnhamspecial:
• Convocation–Traditionallyheldthefirstdayofclasses,Convocationistheformalopening
oftheschoolyearandawelcometoallmembersoftheSBScommunity.Theprogram
culminatesinallstudentsandcommunityadultssigningtheirnamestotheHonorCode.

MountainDay–Thedateisasurpriseandclassesarecancelled.BigSisterstreatLittle
Sisterstobreakfastandtheentirecommunitytravelstoanearbymountainforadayof
hikingandactivities,relaxing,enjoyingacookoutandhavingfuntogether.

HauntedHouse–Everyyear,theseniorclassdesignsandassemblesahauntedhousefor
otherstudentstoenjoyonHalloween.

HolidayDecorating-Theseniorclassdecoratesseveralareasonthefirstfloorofthe
buildingsothatwhenyoungerstudentswakeup,theycanenjoythefeelofwinterandthe
approachingvacationperiod.

SecretSnowflake–Studentsandadultsmaychoosethenameofanotherpersoninthe
communityanddonicethingsforthatpersonintheformofactions,cardsorlittlegiftsfor
fourdayspriortowintervacation.Onthelastdayofschoolbeforevacation,Secret
Snowflakespresentagifttothepersonwhosenametheyhavechosenandrevealtheir
identity.

SpiritWeek-SponsoredbytheStudentCouncilinmid-winter,SpiritWeekdictatesa
differentfocusfordresseachdayandendstheweekwith“ColorWars,”acompetition

amongclassesthat takesplaceatHousemeeting.It’safunwaytowardoffthewinter
doldrums!

SpearthDay–AcombinedcelebrationofEarthDayandspring.Thedaybeginswith
communityserviceworkforstudentsandendswithatalentshowandfairtocelebrategood
weather,funandfriendship.
CommunityExpectations
AswestrivetolivebyourMissionStatementandHonorCode,allmembersoftheStoneleigh-Burnham
communityareaccountabletoeachother,totheSchoolandtothemselves.Studentsareresponsiblefor
theirownbehavioronandoffcampus.
WebelievethatparentsserveaspartnerswiththeSchoolandarecriticalinourhelpingeachstudent
growtoherpotential.Parentsassistintheprocessofhelpingstudentsunderstandtheimpact,both
positiveandnegative,oftheiractionsonfamilyandcommunity.Throughtheenrollmentcontract,all
SBSparentsagreetofullysupporttheacademicandcommunityexpectationsofstudents.

TheDirectorofCounselingisresponsibleforoverseeingtheclinicalandemotionalneedsofstudents.
Thecounselorisavailabletomeetinconfidencewithanystudentwhowishestoreceivesupport,
problemsolveorseeksolutionstopersonalissuestheyarefacing.Thecounselorcanandmaymake
referralstolocaltherapistswhenitisappropriateforthestudenttobeinvolvedinindividualtherapy
outsideofschool.Parentsarenotifiedwhenapsychiatricconsultationoroutsidetherapyiswarranted.
ConversationsbetweenthestudentandtheDirectorofCounselingareconfidentialexceptincaseswhere
astudentisatriskofharmingherselforothers.Inthesesituations,informationissharedwiththe
StudentServicesCommittee,whowillcollaboratewiththeDirectorofCounselingandthefamilyto
providetheappropriatesupportorreferral.
TheSupportOurStudents(SOS)Group
Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolrecognizesthatstudentsintroublewithsubstanceusemaynotalwaysseek
counselingforfearthattheymaybepunished,ratherthanhelped.TheSOSGrouphasbeeninstituted
toprovideanon-disciplinaryprocedurethroughwhichstudentscangethelpforthemselvesor
encouragetheirpeerstodoso.Theyalsofunctionasaclearinghouseforconcernsraisedbyfacultyand
studentsalikeaboutstudentswithpotentialsubstanceabuseandotherproblems.Membersofthe
communitywhoareworriedaboutthebehaviorofastudentareencouragedtocontactamemberof
theSOSGroup.Thenameofthepersonraisingtheconcernandthenamesofthoseaboutwhom
concernshavebeenraisedarekeptstrictlyconfidential.TheSOSGroupmaysharetheseconcernswith

Technology
Inordertomeetthebroadrangeofacademiccomputingneeds,Stoneleigh-Burnhamstudentshave
accesstotwocomputerlabsaswellasseveraladditionalcomputerssituatedthroughouttheSchool.All
academiccomputersarenetworked,allowingaccesstoprintersandtheSchool’semail/messaging
system.
StudentswhohavetheirowncomputersandwishtobringthemtoStoneleigh-Burnhamforpersonal
useareencouragedtodoso.Allstudentswhointendtousethestudentwirelesssystemmustregister
theircomputerswiththeTechnologyDepartmentandcomplywithallapplicablerulesandregulations.
Studentsingrades7-12arerequiredtohaveaniPadtoaccessebooksandcompleterequired
assignments.AnycurrentlyavailableiPadmodel,32GBorhigher,fullsizeormini,willmeetstudents’
schoolneeds.16GBmodelsarenolongersufficientforschoolwork.Allstudentswillbeexpectedto
arriveatclasseachmorningwiththeiriPadfullychargedandwithsufficientfreespaceforrequired
assignments.Theschoolwillprovideaselectionofrequiredappsforall.Pleasenote,eTextsandebooks,
aswellassubjectspecificappswillbebilledtostudentaccounts.
TheTechnologyDepartmentatSBSmakesanefforttoassiststudentswithpersonalcomputerissues
and,asnecessary,helptoarrangeforoutsideserviceandrepairs.Tobetterfacilitateassistance,
studentsshouldbringanysoftwarethatcamewiththeircomputer,aswellasinformationpertainingto
warrantystatus.Ourabilitytoassistinternationalstudentswiththeircomputersmaybelimitedbythe
nativelanguageofthecomputertheybringtoschool.TheSchoolwillprovidevirusprotectionforall
student-ownedcomputers.TheTechnologyDepartmentgenerallycannotaddressrecreationalneeds
suchasDVDplayers,videocameras,gamingsoftwareandcomponents.TheTechnologyDepartment
maychoosenottoaddresscomputerissueswhichariseduetoabuseorneglect.Studentsare
responsibleforanycostsincurredforoutsideserviceandrepairs.Similarly,theTechnologyDepartment
doesnotloanoutcomputer-relatedparaphernaliaintheeventoftemporaryorpermanentloss.
Chargersandthelikemay,however,bepurchasedatafairratefromthedepartmentandchargedto
theindividual'saccountattheSchoolStore.
Ourin-schoolnetworkisavailableforacademicpurposesduringallclassandstudyhallhours.Students
mayaccesstheInternetviatheirowncomputersforrecreationalpurposesonlywithintimeandhour
limitsallottedforeachgradelevelwhicharesubjecttochangeforacademicordisciplinaryreasons.
Studentsarerequestedtoturnofftheirpersonalcomputerswhennotinusetosaveelectricity.
HealthServices
HealthservicesareprovidedthroughtheHealthCareCenter.AnurseisondutyintheHealthCare
Centerfrom7:30a.m.until7:00p.m.MondaythroughThursdayanduntil6:00p.m.onFriday.Evening
medicationsmaybepickedupfromtheAODbetween9:45-10:15p.m.Onweekends,theHealthCare
Centermaintainsalimitedscheduleofhours.Anurseisalwayson-callwhentheCenterisclosedto

meettheneedsofthestudents.AttimeswhenthereisnonurseintheCenter,studentsshouldcontact
theAODorhouseparentonduty.
StudentsareencouragedtobringtheirhealthconcernstotheattentionoftheHealthCareCenterstaff,
whereconfidentialitywillbemaintainedunlesstheirwelfareorthesafetyofothersisinquestion.
Appointments
AppointmentsforoutsidespecializedmedicalanddentalneedsarescheduledthroughtheHealthCare
Center.ParentswhomakeappointmentsfortheirdaughtersshouldnotifytheHealthCareCenterin
advancesothenecessarypaperworkmaybecompletedandtransportationarranged.Allroutine
dentalandothertreatmentsofanon-emergencynatureshouldbescheduledwhilethestudentishome
onvacationandonnon-schooldays.
HealthInsurance
AllstudentsmusthaveUnitedStates-basedhealthinsurancethatcoversthemduringtheiracademic
yearatStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool.HealthinsuranceisavailableforpurchasethroughStoneleighBurnhamSchool.IfyourcurrentplanisamanagedcareplanorHMO(especiallystudentsfromthe
easternregionofMassachusettsorout-of-state),pleasecheckwithyourinsuranceprovidertoensure
coverageforyourdaughter.Youmayhavetofileyourowninsuranceclaimsfortreatment,depending
ontheprovideryourchildseeshereatSBS.TheHealthCareCenterwillinformtheparentofanyoutside
appointments.Itistheparent/guardian’sresponsibilitytonotifytheirprimarycarephysicianfor
referrals.
EmotionalDistress
Astudentexhibitingemotionalorpsychologicaldistressorthreateningtohurtherselforotherswillbe
assessedbytheDirectorofCounselingandtheDirectoroftheHealthServices.Aplanforthestudent’s
safetywillbedeterminedbyateamofadministratorsincluding,butnotlimitedto,theDirectorof
Counseling,DirectorofHealthServices,DeanofStudentsandtheHeadofSchool.Parentswillbe
notifiedimmediately.Whendeemednecessaryforthesafetyofthestudentandcommunity,the
studentmayremainovernightintheHealthCareCenter.
DayStudents
DaystudentsareanintegralpartoftheStoneleigh-Burnhamcommunityandareencouragedto
participateinasmuchoftheSchool’slifeaspossible.Whiledaystudentsliveathome,byaccepting
admissiontoStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool,theyacknowledgethattheyareexpectedtoparticipateinall
Schooleventsincluding,butnotlimitedto:formaldinners,performances,openingweekendevents,
graduationweekeventsandoccasionalscheduledeventssuchasthePoetryFestival.
Daystudentsareexpectedtoarriveintimefortheirfirstclassandnotleavecampusuntiltheirlast
obligationisfulfilled,unlessspecialpermissiontoleaveearlyhasbeengrantedbytheDeanofStudents.

Alldaystudentsmustsignoutwhenleavingcampusandreturning.Whenleavingfortheday,day
studentssignoutontheformlocatedatReception.
Ifadaystudentwillbelateorabsent,thestudent’sfamilyisresponsiblefornotifyingtheAttendance

TheSchoolmustreceiveadvancepermissionfromdaystudentfamiliesforanyovernightstay.Ifaday
studentneedstostayovernightforanyextendedperiodoftime,achargeof$50/nightwillbeassessed.
Theywillbeexpectedtobeonahallwaywiththeirpeersandinquietstudy.
Daystudentswillbeassignedadormroomtosharewithotherdaystudentsongrade-appropriate
hallways.Itisexpectedthattheykeeptheirroomclean,neatandreadyforoccasionalinspection.
ResidentialLife
ThegoaloftheStoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolresidentialprogramistoprovideaclose,caringandsafe
environmentforallstudents,whilesupportingtheacademicendeavorsoftheSchool.Eachmemberof
thecommunityisencouragedtodevelopaflexibleandhumanesenseofboundarieswithanawareness
ofrightsandresponsibilitiestoselfandotherswithinadiversecommunity.
Residentiallifeisacrucialpartofastudent’sinvolvementwiththeSchool,herpeersandthefaculty.
Thoughtfuldecisionsandinteractionsgearedtowardthebestinterestsofadolescentstudentsformthe
basisoftheresidentiallifeprogram.Houseparents,ResidentAssistants(RAs)andadministrators

Foroneseasoneachyear,studentsmayelecttobeinvolvedinanalternativeprogramoutsideofthe
regularathleticprogram.TheremainingtwoseasonsmustbespentinStoneleigh-Burnham’sregular
athleticprogram.Foreachoftheseoptions,anapplicationandreviewbytheAthleticDepartmentis
required.Theapplicationmustbereceivedatleastthreeweekspriortothestartofpracticeforthe
upcomingseason.Informationonthecriteriaanddeadlinefortheapplicationisavailablebycontacting

encouragestudentstospecializeatStoneleigh-Burnham,butrathertoengageinavarietyof
athleticexperiences.Overtheyears,ourmosttalentedindividualshavethrivedonmaintaining
suchdiversityintheirathleticinvolvement.Thatsaid,trulyexceptionalstudentswillbe
consideredforasingleseasonwaiverfromourprogramtopursueasportspecializationoff
campus.
Inallofthesecases,studentsmustfollowtheapplicationprocedureinplace.
OutsideSports
Occasionally,astudentmaywishtobecomeinvolvedinaprogramoutsideoftheSchoolinadditionto
participatingonaSchoolteam.ItisthepolicyoftheSchoolthatallstudentsmustfirstmeettheir
commitmenttotheathleticandrecreationalprogramsofferedbytheSchool.Ingeneral,students
wishingtobecomeinvolvedinanyadditionalprogramsoutsidethejurisdictionoftheSchoolrequire
approvalofthecoachoftheirsport.
Attendance
Attendanceatallscheduledpracticesandgamesismandatory.Coachestakeattendanceeveryday,and
allabsencesarereportedtotheAttendanceoffice.Sportsabsencesaretreatedthesameasclass
absences.Studentsareexpectedtoattendallpracticesandgames,evenifsickorinjured,unless
restrictedbythenurseortheAthleticTrainer.Inthosecases,theAthleticTrainerwillcommunicatewith
coachesdirectly.Ifastudentbecomessickorinjuredduringpractice,shemustbereferredtothe
AthleticTrainer.
Anyunexcusedabsenceorlatearrivaltoanathleticcommitmentwillresultinpointsassignedtothe
studentinvolved.Ifanathletemissesmorethanhalfofherdailyclassesduetoillnessordisciplinary
reasons,shewillnotbepermittedtopracticeorplayingamesthatoccuronthatday.Athleteswhoare
absentforexcusedpersonalreasonsmayreturntoplayingamesthatday.
Practices
Allstudentsareexpectedtohaveproperattire,equipmentandwaterbottlesateverypractice.Failure
tobringtherequiredequipmentwillnotbeacceptedasanexcusefornon-participationandwillbe
consideredanunexcusedabsence.Profanityoranyotherunsportsmanlikeconductwillnotbetolerated
atanypractice,athleticeventortripandwillresultindisciplinaryaction.

Allteammembersarerequiredtobedressedneatly,arrivingathostschoolsdressedproperlyin
uniformorSBSwarm-ups.Incaseswheretheydressatthehostschool,teammembersshouldbe
dressednicelyandneatly.Duringwarm-upsandgames,SBSteamuniformsmustbewornbyeveryone.
AllteammembersmustuseSchool-providedtransportationtoandfromoff-campuspracticesandaway
gamesunlessapprovedbythecoachorAthleticDirector.Teambuses,benchesandotherfacilities
designatedforathleticsshouldbeusedonlybyteammembers.Athletesshouldnotbeconversingwith
othersduringgames.Schoolrulesapplyonalltrips.
EquipmentandUniforms
Eachstudentisresponsible(atcostofreplacement)forallitemsofclothingandequipmentissuedtoher
bytheAthleticDepartment.ClothingandequipmentissuedbytheAthleticDepartmentshouldbe
returnedinaconditionsimilartothatwhichwasevidentuponissue,takingintoconsiderationnormal
wear.Cuttingthesleevesoffajerseywouldnotconstitutenormalwear,soplayersshouldknowthat
theywillbechargedforanewitem.Studentssignacontractholdingthemaccountablefortheirreturn.
Astheseasonends,theDirectorofAthleticswillaskthatallSchool-issueditemsbereturnedbya
specifieddate.Itemsnotreturnedordamagedbeyondnormalwearandtearwillresultinachargefor
replacement.PleasenotethattheSchooldoesnotsupplyfootwearforanysport.Wedosupplyhelmets

CertifiedAthleticTrainer
AcertifiedAthleticTrainerwillbepresentduringallhomeathleticgames.WhentheAthleticTrainer
cannotbepresent,aSchoolnursewillcover.TheAthleticTrainerworkstogetherwiththeHealthCare
Centertoprovidequalityhealthcareservicestoourathletesconsistentwiththestandardssetbythe
NationalAthleticTrainingAssociationandTheBoardofAlliedHealthofMassachusetts.TheAthletic
Trainerarrangesofficevisitsforrehabilitationandphysicaltherapyandworkswithlocaldoctorsto
ensureappropriatecare.

Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolwelcomesgirlsfromallovertheworldwhocomeherenotonlytolearn,but
alsotosharetheirculturesandcustoms.TheInternationalProgramencompassesmanylevelsof
commitmenttomulticulturaleducation.Ourgoalistofosteraglobalcommunityinwhichourstudents
learntobecompassionateandcompetitiveinaglobalsociety.Theacademiccurriculumincorporates

BecomingAcclimated
Weencourageallinternationalstudentstojoinclubsandactivitiesasmuchaspossible.Whilewe
understanditisachallengetojoingroupsasanewstudent,itisultimatelyaveryrewardingpartofthe
Schoolexperience.Sportsarealsoanimportantwaytomeetandgettoknownewpeople.Inaddition,
bondingtripsatthebeginningoftheyearareanotherwaytobecomecomfortablewithnew

SharingCultures
InternationalstudentsareanimportantpartofourwholeSchoolcommunity,andtheyhelptoeducate
allofusabouttherestoftheworld.Whileitisimportantforinternationalstudentstobecome
assimilatedintoourAmericanschool,theywillalsohavemanyopportunitiestosharetheircultureswith
others.Someoftheseincludeinternationalmeals,exhibits,entertainment,cooking,theopportunityto

Non-Harassment/Anti-HazingPolicy
Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolsupportsanenvironmentofmutualtrustandpromotestherecognitionand
protectionoftherightsandsensitivitiesofitsmembers.Concomitantly,Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolhas
astrictpolicyprohibitingharassmentofitsstudents,staffmembers,teachers,administratorsand
trustees(hereinaftercollectivelyreferredtoas“members”),includingimpliedorexpressedformsof
sexualharassment.Sexualharassment,likeanyotherformofharassment,ismembermisconductand
cannotbetolerated.Suchconducthasthepurposeoreffectofsubstantiallyinterferingwithindividuals’
work,academicperformancesorextracurricularparticipationandcreates,defacto,anintimidating,
hostileoroffensiveworkingorlearningenvironment.
Asusedhere,harassmentmeansanyverbal,written,visualorphysicalactthatisoffensive,intimidating,
unwelcomeorwhatmightbeperceivedtobeobjectionableinnature.Becauseeachofushasdifferent
sensibilitiesaboutwhatisacceptableandunacceptablebehavior,allmembersoftheSchoolcommunity
areurgedtobemindfulofthisfactandavoidanyactionorstatementwhichcouldbeperceivedas
harassment.
Abuseofthedignityofanyonethroughethnic,racistorsexualslursorcommentsorthroughanyother
derogatoryorobjectionableconductisoffensivebehaviorandwillresultindisciplinaryactionuptoand
includingseparationfromSchool.Offensivebehavioralsoincludesphysicaladvancesorintimations,
sexualorotherwise,anduninvitedsuggestiveremarks.Anymemberwhojoinsinorcondones

Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolstrictlyforbidsanyactionorbehaviorthatconstituteshazingasdefinedby
theMassachusettsAnti-HazingLaw.Thetermhazingisdefinedbylawas“anyconductormethodof
initiationintoanystudentorganization,whetheronpublicorprivateproperty,whichwillfullyor
recklesslyendangersthephysicalormentalhealthofanystudentorotherperson.Suchconductshall

includewhipping,beating,branding,forcedcalisthenics,exposuretoweather,forcedconsumptionof
food,liquor,beverage,drugorothersubstanceoranybrutaltreatmentorforcedphysicalactivitywhich

subjectssuchstudentorotherpersontoextremementalstress,includingextendeddeprivationofsleep

Anystudentwhofeelsthatshehasbeensubjectedtoharassmentorhazingofanytypebyanymember
oftheSchoolcommunityshould,withoutfear,reporttheincidentpromptlytotheappropriateteacher,
departmenthead,deanorHeadofSchoolascircumstancesdictate.Allcomplaintswillbeinvestigatedin
astrictlyconfidentialmannerandwhereinvestigationsupportsanallegation,promptcorrectiveaction
willbetakenbytheHeadofSchool.Innocaseshallthenameofthereportingpartybeusedwithouthis

StatutoryRape
Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolisrequiredbylawtonotifyallstudentsthattheyaresubjecttothestatutes
oftheMassachusettsStatutoryRapelaw.Statutoryrapeoccursifapersonhassexualintercourseor
“unnatural”sexualintercoursewithachild,whethermaleorfemale,whoisunder16.Unlikeordinary
rapewherethevictimmustnothaveconsentedtointercourse,instatutoryrapetheminor’sconsentto

todiscoverherbestselfandgraduatewiththeconfidencetothinkindependentlyandactethically,
secureintheknowledgethathervoicewillbeheard.”TheHonorCodefurtherencouragesandexpects
ourstudentstobeguidedbythefollowing:“Respectforothersinallmywords,expressionsandactions.

Retaliation:anyformofintimidation,reprisal,orharassmentdirectedtowardapersonwhoreports
bullying,providesinformationduringaninvestigationofbullying,orwitnessesorhasreliable

Target:theindividualagainstwhombullying,cyber-bullyingorretaliationhasbeenperpetrated.
Perpetrator:astudentoramemberofaschoolstaffincludingbynotlimitedto,aneducator,
administrator,schoolnurse,cafeteriaworker,custodian,busdriver,athleticcoach,advisortoan
extracurricularactivityorparaprofessionalwhoengagesinbullyingorretaliation.
II.PolicyagainstBullying,Cyber-Bullying,andRetaliation
TheSchoolwillnottolerateanyformofbullyingorcyber-bullying,norwillittolerateretaliationagainst
anypersonwhoreportsbullying,providesinformationduringaninvestigationofbullyingorcyberbullying,orwitnessesorhasreliableinformationaboutbullying.
Bullyingandcyber-bullyingareprohibitedontheSchool’scampus;atallschool-relatedactivities,both
onandoffcampus;andinanyvehicleusedforschool-relatedtransportation.Bullyingandcyber-bullying
arealsoprohibitedthroughtheuseoftechnologyoranyelectronicdeviceschool-owned,school-leased
orusedattheSchool.

Bullyingandcyber-bullyingareadditionallyprohibitedunderanynon-school-relatedcircumstancesif
theactivitycreatesahostileenvironmentatschoolforatargetedstudentorstudents,infringesonthe
rightsofsuchstudentorstudentsatschool,orsubstantiallydisruptstheeducationalprocessororderly
operationoftheSchool.Forexample,astudentmaynotassumeprotectionwhenusingacomputerat
homeforpurposesrelatedtobullying;thisincludesbeingtheperpetratorofacyber-bullyingmessage
and/orbeingtheindividualwhopassesonealong.
Werecognizethatcertainstudentsmaybemorevulnerabletobecomingtargetsofbullying,
harassment,orteasingbasedonactualorperceivedcharacteristics,includingrace,color,religion,
ancestry,nationalorigin,sex,socioeconomicstatus,homelessness,academicstatus,genderidentity
orexpression,physicalappearanceordisability,orbyassociationwithapersonwhohasoris
perceivedtohaveoneormoreofthesecharacteristics.Theschoolwillidentifyspecificstepsitwill
taketocreateasafe,supportiveenvironmentforvulnerablepopulationsintheschoolcommunityand
provideallstudentswiththeskills,knowledge,andstrategiestopreventorrespondtobullying,
harassment,orteasing.
LegalDefinitionsandSchoolPolicy
ItisimportanttobearinmindthatstricterstandardsofbehaviormayapplyunderStoneleighBurnham’spoliciesinorderthatwemaypreventinappropriateverbalandphysicalconductbeforea
studenthasbeensubjecttobullyingasitisdefinedunderthelaw.Forexample,althoughthelaw
definesbullyingas“repeateduse”ofcertainexpressions,actsand/orgestures,theSchoolreservesthe
righttoapplydisciplinarymeasuresandothercorrectiveactioninacaseofasingleexpression,act
and/orgestureiftheSchooldeterminesthatitisofsufficientseveritytowarrantdisciplinaryorother
remedialactionorthattherepetitionofthatexpression,actorgesturemightreasonablyresultin
bullyingasdefinedbythelaw.
III.Prevention
Aswitheverythinginvolvingadolescents,bullyingpreventionstartswithworkingtobuildstrong
relationshipswithandamongthestudents.Thiscanhappenintheclassroom,inadvisory,onthe
residentialhallways,duringathletics,whileperformingcommunityservice,andanywhereelseSBS
adultshavethechancetointeractwiththestudents.
Studentgroupsoncampusareactiveinhelpingdevelopunderstandingsamongcommunitymembersat
theschool.Thesegroupshaverecentlyworkedwithgoalssuchasbuildingstrengthindiversity;raising
consciousnessaroundthedifficultiesexperiencedbygay,lesbianandtransgenderedstudents;
identifyingissuesofraceandracialidentity;andintroducingtraditionsandholidaysofworldcultures
andreligionstothecommunity.
Inaddition,thereareseveralspecificprogramsthataddresstheissuesofbullyingandrelatedtopics
throughouttheacademicyear.
Orientation
LargergroupworkfortheentireMiddleSchool(grades7&8)beginsduringOrientation,continues
duringanearlyfalltrip,andmayberevisitedasneededduringweeklyMOCA(StudentGovernment)
meetings.Similarly,eachclassintheUpperSchoolhasa“bondingtrip”duringOrientation.Eachis
designedtohelptheclassworktogetherinordertofindcommonalitiesthatwilltakethestudents

throughtheyeartogether.Asfollow-up,classmeetingsoccurweeklyintheUpperSchool,duringwhich
anyemergingissuesmayalsobeaddressed.
LifeSkillsDevelopment
TheSchoolCounselorworksactivelywiththeMiddleSchoolDeantoplanaseriesofactivitieswiththe
7thgraders.Shemeetswiththemtwiceamonththroughouttheyear.Theseactivitiestypicallyfocuson
buildinghealthyfriendshipsandnegotiatingconflict,withsubtopicsinthelatterareaincludingrelational
aggression,I-statements,activelistening,learninghowtoagreetodisagree,quellinggossip,andmore.
Topicsvarymonth-to-monthandyear-to-year,dependingontheneedsofaspecificgroupofstudents.
TheSchoolCounseloralsoworksactivelywith8thgraders,meetingonceamonthtocontinuebuilding
positivegroupdynamics,self-awareness,andleadershipskills.
OnceastudententerstheUpperSchool(grades9-12),sheisenrolledintheForumprogram,alifeskills
developmentcurriculum,onceaweek.AteverylevelthereisaunitonInternetsafetyaswellasoneon
buildingmulti-culturalunderstandings.Inaddition,Ninthgradersareassignedaresearchprojectin
whichtheyresearchbullyinganddeveloppresentationstomakebeforeanaudience.
OtherFormats
Convocationtakesplaceonthefirstdayofclasses.InthisceremonyeachmemberoftheSchoolsignsa
copyoftheHonorCodeasanindicationofher/hiscommitmenttothetenetsofthatdocument.Itis
thenframedandhungpubliclyasareminderofthosevalueshereattheSchool.
Additionally,individualclassroomteachersandresidentfacultywatchforissuesingroupdynamics,and
trytomovequicklytohandlethembeforetheydevelopintodeeper,morecomplexissues.These
concernstypicallygothroughthestudent’sfacultyadvisor.SocialteammeetingsintheMiddleSchool,
facultymeetingsintheUpperSchool,andResidentTeammeetingsforbothdivisionsprovidean
opportunitytotakethepulseoftheschoolandtodevelopasneededplanstoencouragepositivegroup
dynamicsusingavarietyofmethods.ThesemeetingsmayalsoservetoinspiretopicsfortheSchool
Counselor(MiddleSchool)andForumteachers(UpperSchool).Finally,theDutyNotesfolderallows
houseparentstoinformotherteammembersaboutwhatishappeningonthehallway.
Thecurriculum,especiallyintheHumanities,lendsitselfonoccasiontofrankdiscussionaboutissues
relatedtobullyingandmeannessaswell.Buildingcross-culturalunderstandingswithinaninternational
curriculumaffordsusmultipleopportunitiestodrawoutdifferingstudentviewpointsandsharethemin
asafespace.Itisnotuncommontohearourstudentssharingwhatisconsidered“thenorm”intheir
respectivecultures,thusleadingtodeeperunderstandingofdifference.
Professionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforfacultyandstaff,whethersendingthemoffcampusto
conferencesordoinginformalworkhere,arealsoscheduled.
Throughtheseactivities,andthroughadvisors’communicationwithparents,weworktomaintainahigh
levelofawarenessofwhatishappeningintheMiddleandUpperSchools,buildpositivegroup
dynamics,andquicklyrespondtopotentialissuesbeforetheyhaveachancetospiralintosomething
larger.

Asapartofbefore-schooltraining,allResidentAssistants(juniorsandseniors)learntheir
responsibilitiesinthedorms;thisincludesanunderstandingoftheirroleindeterringbullyingbehaviors
andinreportinganyegregiousbehaviorswitnessed.Similarly,membersoftheStudentCouncil(Upper
School)understandtheirparttoactasrolemodelsandhelpcreateanenvironmentinwhichbullyingis
nottolerated.
InternationalStudents/Mid-YearStudentEnrollments
Internationalstudentsmeetfrequentlyatthestartofeachyearinordertoensuregirlsfromoutsidethe
U.S.learnaboutAmericanand,specifically,Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolcultureassoonaspossible.
IncludedinthesemeetingsisconversationtoexplaintheSchoolrulesandpoliciesingreatdetail.
InJanuarytheSchoolreviewstheSchool’spolicies(includingthatregardingbullying)throughadvisory
groupssothatanynewlyenrolledstudentmayhaveaclearsenseoftheSchool’sstanceonissuessuch
asbullying,andmore.
AssessingNeedsandResources:
Atleastonceeveryfouryears,beginninginthe2015-2016schoolyear,theSchoolwilladministera
state-designedsurveytoassessschoolclimateandtheprevalence,natureandseverityofbullyingin
ourSchool.Additionally,theSchoolwillannuallyreportbullyingincidentstotheMassachusetts
DepartmentofElementaryandSecondaryEducation.
IV.ReportsofBullying,Cyber-BullyingorRetaliation
Anystudentwhoisthetargetofbullyingorcyber-bullyingisstronglyencouragedtopromptlyreportthe
matterorallyorinwritingtotheHeadofSchoolorDeanofStudentsortoanyfacultyorstaffmember
withwhomthestudentiscomfortablespeaking.
Anystudentwhohaswitnessedanincidentofbullyingorcyber-bullyingorotherwisehasrelevant
informationaboutbullyingorcyber-bullyingprohibitedbythispolicyisexpectedtopromptlyreportthe
matterorallyorinwritingtotheHeadofSchoolorDeanofStudentsortoanyfacultyorstaffmember
withwhomthestudentiscomfortablespeaking.
Theparentofastudentwhoisthetargetofbullyingorcyber-bullyingorofastudentwhohaswitnessed
orhasrelevantinformationaboutbullyingisstronglyurgedtonotifytheHeadofSchoolorDeanof
Students.AparentshouldalsoreportanyincidentofretaliationinviolationofthispolicytotheHeadof
SchoolortheDeanofStudents.
Anyparent,guardianorstudentmaymakereportsofbullyingorretaliationanonymously,ifdesired.
Anymemberofthefacultyandstaffwhohaswitnessedincidentsofbullyingorcyber-bullying,orhas
beentoldofsuchanincident,isrequiredbylawtoreportthemtotheHeadofSchoolorDeanof
Students.Amemberofthefacultyorstaffmaynotmakepromisesofconfidentialitytoastudentor
parentwhoinformshim/herofanallegationofbullying,cyber-bullyingorretaliation.Facultyandstaff
areexplicitlydirectedNOTtotrytofacilitatemediationbetweentargetandaggressor;onlytheHeadof
SchoolortheDeanofStudentsshouldbedealingwithfollow-up.Similarly,onceaninvestigationhas
begun,onlythepersonconductingtheinvestigationshouldbeincontactwiththestudentsandparents
involveduntiltheinvestigationiscomplete.

FacultyandStaffmaynotmakereportsunderthispolicyanonymously.WhiletheSchoolcannot
promisestrictconfidentiality,becauseinformationmustbesharedinordertoconductaneffective

retaliationonlyonalegitimateneed-to-knowbasis.
V. RespondingtoaReportofBullying,Cyber-bullying,orRetaliation
A. PreliminaryConsiderations:Whenacomplaintofbullying,cyber-bullyingand/orretaliationis
broughttotheattentionoftheHeadofSchool,theDeanofStudentsoranyothermemberoftheSchool
community,anassessmentismadeastowhetheranyinitialstepsneedtobetakentoprotectthewellbeingofstudentsandtopreventdisruptionoftheirlearningenvironmentwhiletheinvestigationis
beingconducted.Whenappropriate,increasedsupervisionmaybeimplementedtopreventfurther
bullying,cyber-bullyingorretaliationduringaninvestigation.
B. ObligationtoNotifyParents:ItisthepolicyofStoneleigh-BurnhamSchooltonotifytheparentsof
anystudentwhoisanallegedtargetofbullying,cyber-bullying,orretaliationandtheparentsofany
studentwhomayhavebeenaccusedofengaginginsuchbehaviorpromptlyafteracomplainthasbeen
made.Further,theSchoolwillinformtheparentsoftheDepartmentofElementaryandSecondary

Dependingonthecircumstances,thepersonconductingtheinvestigationalsomaychoosetoconsult
withotherteachersand/ortheSchoolCounselor.Concreteformsofevidence,suchascopiesof
electroniccommentary,mayalsobebroughtintoconsideration.
D. Resolution,NotificationandFollowUp
Followinginterviewsandanyotherinvestigationundertaken,theHeadofSchooland/ortheDeanof
Studentswilldeterminewhetherandtowhatextenttheallegationofbullying,cyber-bullingor
retaliationhasbeensubstantiated.IfitisdeterminedthatthepolicysetforthinthisPlanhasbeen
violated,theHeadofSchooland/ortheDeanofStudentswilldeterminewhatdisciplinaryactionand/or
otherremedialactionisappropriateandhowitwillbeimplemented.

Thegoalofaninvestigationandanysubsequentdisciplinaryorremedialprocessistocorrectthe
situationtotheextentitisreasonablypossibleandtotakesuchstepsascanbetakentopreventthere
beingarepetitionoftheincidentandtopreventthestudentorstudentstargetedandotherswho
participatedintheinvestigationfrombeingsubjecttoretaliation.Thisincludessupportforthealleged

Consequencesresultingfromadeterminationthatthispolicyhasbeenviolatedmayincludeany

suchaswhenacrimemayhavebeencommittedorachildmayhavebeensubjecttoabuseorneglectof
thetypethatisreportableunderSection51AoftheMassachusettslaws,lawenforcementoranother
appropriategovernmentagencymaybenotified.
Uponcompletionoftheinvestigation,theHeadofSchooland/ortheDeanofStudentswhoconducted
theinvestigationwillmeetindividuallywiththestudentorstudentswhowerethetargetofthealleged
incidentandthestudentorstudentsagainstwhomthecomplaintwasmadeandtheirparentstoreport
theresultsoftheinvestigationand,wheredisciplinaryorothercorrectiveactionisdeterminedtobe
appropriate,toinformthepartiesofthestepsthatwillbetakentocorrectthesituation.Confidentiality
lawsprotectingstudentrecordsmaylimittheamountofinformationprovidedinthesemeetings.
Follow-upconversationswillbemadewithanystudentfoundtohavebeentargetedandherparentsto
inquireastowhethertherehavebeenanyfurtherincidentsinviolationofthispolicy.
VI. Conclusion
Thisplanisintendedto(1)preventbullyingandcyber-bullyingamongourcommunitymembers,(2)to
encouragecommunitymemberstohaveconfidenceintheSchool’sproceduresandtocomeforward
promptlywheneverastudentissubjecttoconductthatisprohibitedbythisoranyotherSchoolpolicy;
and(3)toimplementappropriatedisciplineandothercorrectivemeasureswhentheyarefoundtobe

Whoeverisaprincipalorganizerorparticipantinthecrimeofhazing,asdefinedherein,shallbe
punishedbyafineofnotmorethanthreethousanddollarsorbyimprisonmentinahouseofcorrection
fornotmorethanoneyear,orbothsuchfineandimprisonment.

Section18.FailuretoReportHazing
Whoeverknowsthatanotherpersonisthevictimofhazingasdefinedinsectionseventeenandisatthe
sceneofsuchcrimeshall,totheextentthatsuchpersoncandosowithoutdangerorperiltohimselfor
others,reportsuchcrimetoanappropriatelawenforcementofficialassoonasreasonablypracticable.
Whoeverfailstoreportsuchcrimeshallbepunishedbyafineofnotmorethanonethousanddollars.
Section19.IssuancetoStudentsandStudentGroups,TeamsandOrganizations;Report
Eachinstitutionofsecondaryeducationandeachpublicandprivateinstitutionofpost-secondary
educationshallissuetoeverystudentgroup,studentteamorstudentorganizationwhichispartofsuch
institutionorisrecognizedbytheinstitutionorpermittedbytheinstitutiontouseitsnameorfacilities
orisknownbytheinstitutiontoexistasanunaffiliatedstudentgroup,studentteamorstudent

DisciplinaryPolicies
WhenastudentisinviolationofoneormoreMajorCommunityRules,orifsheshowsrepeated
difficultieswiththetypesofminortransgressionshandledbythePrivilegeSystem,sheisreferredfor
disciplinaryaction.
IntheeventthatastudenthasbeendisciplinedfortheviolationofaMajorCommunityRule,high
prioritywillbegiventorespectthedignityofthatstudent.TheDeanofStudentsortheHeadofSchool
may,however,announcepubliclythenatureofthedisciplinarycaseandrelatedresults;astudent’s
namewillneverbeattachedtothatannouncement.Insomecases,itwillnotbeappropriatetoreveal
anythingmorethanthefactthatsomethinghappenedofanaturethatcannotbefurtherdiscussed.In
allcases,communitymemberswillbeaskedtorespecttheprivacyoftheindividual(s)involved.We
makesuchannouncementstodeteridlegossipandinaccurateassumptions.
DisciplinaryReviewBoard
TheDisciplinaryReviewBoardexiststoreviewasituationinwhichastudentisfoundtobeseriouslyout
ofcompliancewiththeexpectationsandvaluesofthecommunity.Reasonswhyastudentmightbe
requestedtoappearinfrontoftheDisciplinaryReviewBoardinclude,butarenotlimitedto:violationof
oneormoreMajorCommunityRules,repeatedviolationofoneormoreminorcommunityrules,accrual

ofasignificantnumberofpointswithinthePrivilegeSystemorotheractionsthatdemonstratea
student’sdifficultylivingwithintheboundariesoftheSchoolprogram.
TheReviewBoardconsistsoftheDeanofStudents,atleastthreefacultymembersandfourstudents.
Thestudent’sadvisorattendstheReviewBoardandactsasaresourceandadvocateforthestudent.In
theeventthattheadvisorisunavailable,thestudentmaychooseanotheradultoncampusto
accompanyher.Thestudentisgiventheopportunitytoprovideastatementaboutthesituationleading
uptotheReviewBoardandisaskedtoprovidesomeexplanationofheractions.Honestyisalwaysthe
bestpolicywheninaReviewBoardmeeting.Afterconsideringthefactsaspresented,theReviewBoard
thenmakesrecommendationsforaresponsetotheHeadofSchool.TheHeadofSchoolmay,when

permanentrecordandwillbereportedtoauthorizededucationalinstitutions,ifrequested.
ProbationaryStatus
AstudentplacedonprobationrisksherpositionattheSchoolifshechoosestocontinuetoviolate
communityrules.Makingaconcertedandvisibleefforttomeetcommunitystandardsmustbehergoal
atthatpoint.
In-SchoolSuspensionWeekend
Insomecases,theDeanofStudentswillassignaboardingstudentanin-schoolsuspensionweekend.
StudentsmayreceivethisiftheyhaveaccumulatedalargenumberofpointsunderthePrivilegeSystem,
iftheyhavenotrespectedtheHonorCode,orwhenanout-of-schoolsuspensionisnotwarranted.
Parentswillbenotifiedwhenastudenthasbeenplacedonanin-schoolsuspensionweekend,although
thiswillnotberecordedinthestudent’spermanentfile.Astudentwillnotbeallowedtoleavecampus
atanytimeduringthisweekend.
Suspension
Onrareoccasion,astudentmaybeseparatedfromtheSchoolforaperiodoftimeduetoaserious
violationofaSchoolpolicyorrule.Intheeventastudentissuspended,shewillberesponsibleforall
workdueduringandimmediatelyfollowinghersuspension.Shemustbeindailycontactwithher
teachersbyemailandmustsubmitallworkwhenitisdueandintheformatdeterminedbyher
teachers.Lateworkwillnotbeaccepted.Anyworkthatisimpossibletocompletewhileonsuspension
(labs,presentations,etc.)willreceivenocredit.Thisisadirectconsequenceofthesuspensionandthe
behaviorwhichgarneredtheseparationfromtheSchool.Parentswillberesponsibleforany
transportationcostsassociatedwiththeseparation.Ifitisnotfeasibleforastudenttogohomeon
suspension,theSchoolwillarrangeforaplace,atanadditionalcost.
Expulsion
WhiletheSchooliscommittedtohelpingstudentslearnfromtheirmistakesandcontinuelivinginthe
community,expulsionmaybethebestlessonforcertainegregiousorrepeatedbehaviors.Insucha

case,theSchoolwillmakeeveryefforttosupportthestudentandherfamilyintakingthenextsteps.
ThestudentwillnotbeallowedtoreturntoStoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolforatleastoneacademicyear.
Upondemonstratedredressoftheissuesthatledtoexpulsion,thestudentmayreapplydirectlytothe
HeadofSchoolforreadmission.
Withdrawal
IntheeventthatastudentwithdrawsfromtheSchoolmid-year,writtennotificationisrequiredfrom
theparent/guardian(s)beforethewithdrawalwillbeconsideredofficial.
SearchandSeizurePolicy
Inordertoprotectthesafety,healthandwelfareoftheStoneleigh-Burnhamcommunity,studentsshall
notpossessanyillegalsubstance,objectorothercontrabandincluding,butnotlimitedto:tobacco,
drugs,alcohol,guns,knivesandincendiarydevices.IncaseswheretheSchoolhasreasontosuspectthat
thecommunitymaybejeopardizedinthisway,asearchwillbeconductedbytheDeanofStudentsor
theHeadofSchoolwithanotheradultpresent.ThefamiliesandstudentsofStoneleigh-BurnhamSchool
acknowledgethattheSchoolreservestherighttoperformsearchesandtoseizeanyillegalsubstance,
contrabandorobject.Inaddition,theSchoolmaypursueinvestigationofasuspectedtheftwitha
searchofastudent’sroom.
Searchesmaybeconductedwithorwithoutnoticetothestudentandherfamilyandwithoutthe
consentofthestudent.Whileadheringtoprinciplesoffundamentalfairness,searchesmaybe
conductedwithorwithoutprobablecauseandmayincluderandomunannouncedsearchesthatmaybe
conductedatanytime.Astudent’sroom,deskandcomputersuppliedbytheSchoolandanyother

PlagiarismorAcademicDishonesty
Stoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolconsidersacademichonestytobeanimportantpartofastudent’slife.Asa
memberofourcommunity,eachstudentmustdoherownwork.Facultywillhelpeachstudentdevelop
scholarlyhabits,bothofmindandpractice,thatwillprotectherfromunwittingacademicdishonesty.
Thefacultyandadministrationwilltreatanybreachofacademichonestyseriously(whetheritinvolves

TheStoneleigh-BurnhamSchoolPrivilegeSystemisdesignedtohelpstudentsunderstandthe
importanceoftheircontributionstoourSchoolcommunity.Thissystemrespondstotransgressionswith
consequencesthatarebotheducationalandrestorative.Thesystemdoesnotaddressviolationsof
majorschoolrules;thosearedealtwithbytheDisciplinaryReviewBoard.
ThePrivilegeSystemisnotdesignedtopenalizestudentsundulyforminortransgressions,butratherto
provideabenchmarkforstudentstodeterminehowwellandhowregularlytheyarefulfillingthe
standardexpectationsofaStoneleigh-Burnhamstudent.Transgressionswithinthecommunity–

consultationwithastudent’sadvisor,ClassDean,teachersandhouseparents,theDeanofStudents
mayrestrictastudenttocampusifshehasworkoutstanding,isonanin-schoolsuspensionorfallsin
thereducedorrestrictedcategoryinthePrivilegeSystem.
DuringSchoolvacations,includingtheLongWinterweekend,thedormsandtheDiningHallareclosed
andstudentsmaynotremainoncampusunlessregisteredforaSchool-sponsoredtriporprogram.
StudentsmustarrangetheirtravelearlyinordertocomplywiththepublishedSchoolcalendar.Itisthe
student’sresponsibilitytoensurethathertravelplansdonotconflictwithhercommitmentsatSchool.

Anystudentmight,duringthecourseoftheacademicyear,faceaseriouspsychologicalormedical

medicalleavewillbemadebytheStudentServicesteamandhealthprofessionals.Studentswhotakea
medicalleavemustbeunderadoctor’s,psychologist’sortherapist’scarewhileonmedicalleave.Ifthe
